Update on My Retirement

I posted back in February asking about the feasibility of cleaning houses parttime when I retired from teaching. Well, I DID retire in May from teaching school. However, I retired 14 days earlier than I had intended. I fell at work and broke both bones in my left ankle and left school, alright, in an AMBULANCE! LOL Needless to say, I was pretty immobile for several weeks. Exactly a month to the day after I fell, I went to work at my new parttime job - on a walker! LOL I'm working at an In-Patient Rehab at the local hospital. I enter data into the computer for the rehab. I'm working three five hour mornings and I really like it! Seems strange to be working during the summer, but with only three mornings a week, it's really nice.

Still thinking about cleaning a house or two and probably will, when I'm not still limping! Just wanted you guys to rejoice with me in my "semi" retirement! LOL

Sorry to hear about your accident but glad to hear of your new part time job. I will probably have to find a part time job when I retire,which I hope will be in less than a year. I hope you will mend quickly so you can enjoy your retirement. Judith

Cool! Just a thought on your walkways - wood mulch works quite well in many situations. Some municipalities (like mine) make it available for the hauling from their grindings of collected tree/brush trimmings. Additionally, some tree services have it for the taking.

If you're confused, go to any Social Security office (or call for an appointment at 1 800 772 1213) and ask the representative to explain the calculations. I worked for Social Security for 31 years and never saw a benefit check "go down" because there are only increases after benefits start getting paid. 1. If you continue working (even part-time) and paying SS retirement taxes, every year you get an automatic "recalculation" to see if it's a "high year" that will raise your checks and 2. There are Cost of Living raises every January , though our Congress has not granted one in at least the last couple of years. These COLAS are supposed to account for inflation. And don't get me started on "there's no inflation". Oh, one more thing, your check will go down roughly $100 at age 65 for the Medicare Part B premium. But definitely take Medicare A and B. Even if you're in perfect health. You can "delay" taking Medicare B if you or your spouse are working and have equal or better Health INsurance thru your or spouse's job.

Hi cheery one, I'm pleased that you're happy with the "pro"s of your retirement. And somewhat sad that you're feeling that you're not keeping up to the mark of what you'd hoped/planned to do. If you feel the need to beat yourself over the back about that - make sure it's with a wet noodle ... and only five strokes, O.K? As for the "average" retiree, I don't feel that I have too much of a handle on that ... and wonder what level of expertise you may claim in that department? I think that it's important to do things that we can be pleased with ourselves for having done, at the end of the day ... week ... month ... year. Something that I note to have been scarcely mentioned in this thread so far is the need that all of us retirees have to concern ourselves about (as well as people in the workforce) is the erosion of the value of our income (and, for us retirees, our assets) due to inflation, every year for about the last 80. There hasn't been much increase in incomes in recent years, except for the wealthy few ... but the prices keep going up ... and for most of us, those prices of much of the goods and services that we buy have been and are going up faster than the official rate of inflation. When we put money in the bank, or buy bonds, etc. which pay us the same number of dollars after several years that we gave them in the first place, apart from the "rent" on the money, it isn't only taxes and living expenses that much come out of the earnings ("rent on the money"), but an allowance for inflation, as well, in order to keep the purchasing power of those assets equal in ten years to what it is now. Regarding the stock, it depends on what the stock is. Is it one stock, or a mutual fund? If it were me (and I'm an intermediate level investor), I wouldn't keep that much of my retirement savings in one stock. The dividend of $500 per quarter = $2,000/yr. That's a return of about 1.8%. But of course the stock will probably increase in value over the years (but will decrease in value some years). Warren Buffett advises people who don't anything about stocks to invest in a total stock market index fund (VTSMX, which is Vanguard Total Stock Market Fund) is one of the biggest ones. That way, a person is invested in the total U.S. market, not just one stock. VTSMX also pays a dividend of about the same amt that your mom is getting now. There are other things I'd do with it, too. I might buy into a second mutual fund, for instance. But only someone who knows your mom could advise that specifically. If she wants dividends, if that's the goal, there are mutual funds that pay a lot higher than 1.8%. But you won't get the increase in share value there like you would with a total stock market fund. It depends on what she needs. Income, or total return. Total return is something where she would have to sell some shares periodically to harvest the profit. Dividends are just income she'd automatically get.

I agree with Heather. I didn't like handling money in stores, I certainly don't want to be in someone's home when they are not there. If anything came up missing, I would be the natural suspect.

I'm wondering - how surprised were you at the development of the new job?

And at your reaction to it - and obvious pleasure in it.

One of the interesting things with regard to the workforce is that as things become more computerized, there are more openings for people with physical restrictions.

While I'm sorry that you had the misfortune of the accident, I'm gratified that you haven't let it get you down.

A question - do you find that many teachers are finding that they are becoming too stressed to continue? Or fearing that they may not be able to cope much longer?

Good wishes in your new career.

Hi, all, just now getting back to "hosting my post"! LOL

A former co-worker had asked me back last Nov. if I was really intending to retire from teaching and when I told her I was, she said that she thought she had an offer that I would be interested in pursuing. She was right and they basically "held" the job for me from Nov. till June. She promised me basically stress free and it is. Pay is good for this area and for me not having any prior experience.

As for teachers feeling burned out, yes, I feel that a lot of them are getting that way. The majority of the faculty in the local district have 20 years plus experience. There are not a lot of new faces applying for the few positions that open up each year. Teachers are graying fast! LOL I only hope we get a lot of worthwhile young blood into the educational system. Graduates can make so much more money going into something else and a lot of them do just that.

Ya Ya, that is wonderful that you are retired now and just working part time. I guess it feels good to know that you really don't HAVE to do it if you don't want to. I helped out a little at our local funeral home for a few days, just answering the phone, and I loved it there. It is so much different working with adults all day long. LOL Not nearly as stressful.

Well, hey, Joyful!! Just decided to check out this forum - haven't in a long time. Haven't had time since I've retired! LOL

Loved your comment concerning working at a funeral home. Teachers would esp. appreciate the peace and quiet! LOL

Still working parttime at the rehab unit - got a 4% raise!

I've sort of semi retired as off new years.I cut myself back to two 8hr shifts per week,no weekends.I have chronic back problems and standing for eight hrs 5 days a week was killing me.now I can rest up a little between shifts as I only work monday and thursday.
So far I'm really enjoying it.I miss the money,but not enough to go back full time.I still have a little "mad" money to spend,but have a cleaner house and lots of hobbies that will keep me busy.
