All of the fiberglas doors I have seen with wood graining designs are not subject to that kind of problem as the differences in the depth of the wood grain is minimal. It is a bit more pronounced than oak---which it the most common wood with the most pronounced grain detail in use for house trim and doors. But, there should not be a big problem. Any contact that will scrape off paint from a door is way too much anyway---not normal wear and tear.

I deal with these types of doors almost daily. The best way I've found to paint them is Rustoleum Exterior spray cans. I take the door of it's hinges and lay it across my saw horses. I remove all the hardware and tape around the glass. First I clean the door with a thinner to remove any dust or dirt marks. Then I spray a good first coat on the door and let it dry awhile. I'll then come back and coat it again to make sure it's well covered. Ounce this side is dry I flip the door and do it again. It turns out beautiful every time. I painted my front door a high gloss white over three years ago. Not a scratch to be seen! The exterior paint has a better hardening agent in it that makes it more durable. The ultimate way is knowing someone in the Auto Body trade. If you can get them to paint the door your really doing well. I've seen them done on doors that are over ten years old and you'd think they were brand new. Hope this helps. Good Luck!!!

Try Precision Entry. You can order a fiberglass door in a variety of colors, and a different color or stain on the inside. The doors are painted by robots in their factory in Holmes County Ohio, the middle of Amish country. Super people, super products, hope you can find a good local dealer.
