Book Jacket Canvases on Barnes and Noble Store Walls: Available?

I have admired the art in Barne's and Noble bookstores for years; they have what appear to be canvases of book jackets (approx. 24" x 30") on the walls near the ceiling all around each store. I have spoken to countless managers, emailed the corporate offices, etc., and no one seems to know anything about the art. "It came with the store," "we don't have it for sale," "I don't know where it came from," etc. Even the corporate office seems clueless.

I would like to buy a few of these for my son's room. He is an avid reader and would love the B&N "cover" of Catcher in the Rye and a few other titles. Does anyone know if or where this is for sale? I think it must be a proprietary product because artcom and allposters.com don't have it. Does anyone know the commercial design firm that handles the B&N account? Thanks in advance for any replies.

This may or may not help you, but I'm an author and I can tell you that I receive cover flats of my books. Cover flats are basically what you see when the book is opened flat: :) The front cover, spine, and back cover. I say this because you could easily take a book you enjoy and scan it, then use Photoshop to give it a canvas effect, print it, mat it, and frame it. Too, if your son has a favorite author, you might contact the author to get a cover flat from them for this purpose. Most authors would be totally flattered by such a request AND they'd more than likely autograph it!

I seem to remember being able to buy those at one time as posters and/or printed on canvas through barnesandnoble.com--but I don't see it on their website any more. (I remember the canvas ones were printed "to order.") I did see something similar on barewalls.com, however.

lol, I picked her up from school yesterday and we went back to her class to get her backpack & binder. I asked, 'you have everything?' and she said yes. Later, after 5pm she tells me she forgot her spelling words in her desk. Well, Wednesday is the night they have to put spelling words in alphabetical order and write them three times each. She knew this but I wasn't thinking about it, we had been at the doctor's office & radiology all afternoon, but she brought it up. She said she guesses she can't do her spelling since school is out. My first thought was she did it on purpose and I wanted to call her on it. I didn't. I thought about it for a while and a couple miles down the road, I said that when we get home, she can call her friend that's in her class and ask for the spelling words. She claimed she didn't know her phone number but I told her I do. When we got home, I double checked her binder and the usual spelling list wasn't there but the spelling words were. I found a loophole... the teacher sends home an optional sheet on Fridays. It's an activity they can do over the weekend and at the bottom, it gives the next weeks spelling words so they can start practicing if they want. Well, of course she was bummed that I found that and proceeded to write them out three times each but not in ABC order. DH had her redo it in ABC order. Then we watched TV for a while. She had a great attitude. Her mom sent DH a text message an hour after she went to bed to have SD call her. He wrote back that she was in bed and if she wants, she can call in the morning before SD leaves for the bus. She called before any of us were up and wanted to talk to SD so I went and got her up. I heard SD telling her about going to the doctor and say her arm doesn't hurt anymore. She started to ask BM how she was doing and then abruptly says ok, I love you too. Bye. BM apparently didn't want to 'chat'. That is the FIRST time BM has called SD in a very long time, I can't remember the last time she called her. The doctor called me a few minutes ago to say the X ray shows no break. He said she probably pulled a muscle if she fell on her hands playing on the trampoline. There's not much to do for it, he said to apply heat and showed us how to stretch the muscle. It will resolve itself in a few days if she rests it. and I do agree that some lying... about school work or brushing teeth, etc. are common at her age. I don't know if it's normal or alarming, and I understand the lies she tells her mom to get mom's attention, but she is old enough to understand that there are consequences for those kinds of lies when mom gets CPS or the police involved. There could be great consequences for DH and me. I was more concerned with her lying about injuries, being hit, and things she complains to her mom about but doesn't tell us. We don't find out until BM calls DH to chew him out or now, until she calls CPS. SD never complained to us about having to eat foods she doesn't like and when she told DH about her arm, she only mentioned it once and he didn't see a reason to go to the doctor and she never complained to us about it again. And we don't know if SD complained to her mom or if her mom is the one that is asking her if she was seen by the doctor but I don't know why BM would put it on her daughter to get dad to take her to the doctor if SD isn't saying it hurts. I'm probably overly cynical of BM, but I'd say she knows SD fell on the trampoline and got hurt and didn't want to pay for a doctor visit so she told SD to tell dad her arm hurts so he can make sure it wasn't hurt too bad. SD told him a couple of days after coming back from BM's, after she got off the phone with her. BM might have reminded her to ask dad. DH looked at it, and didn't think it was broken and considering SD had gone to cross country and was swinging her arms around earlier, concluded it wasn't too serious. SD never told him she fell down on the trampoline. I'm sure she didn't want to get mom in trouble, although we don't know exactly what happened so it could be an innocent **stuff happens with kids** accident or it could be she was not being supervised and got hurt. We don't know that and we already know BM isn't going to tell us if she did anything wrong. But, when SD came home this last weekend, she did tell DH that she collided with her sister on the trampoline and cut her lip. She said her teeth went into her sister's leg. That was on Sunday and on Monday, she didn't call BM but she did call BM on Tuesday and after she got off the phone, she again told DH that her arm hurt. On Wednesday is when CPS went to the school so it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see how coincidental it all is. I'll admit that I am pessimistic when it comes to BM. But, I've never been wrong about her actions.. not yet anyways. I have been surprised that she has done some things I've predicted because I honestly was fooled at first and she presented herself as a GREAT mother. But, maybe because of my 'control freak'ness, I noticed little details that went unnoticed by my DH about her. I mean, she did things that I found odd being a mother myself. I went through custody issues with my son's father and we would fight over who gets him more, not who has to take him. She was always asking him to take SD on her weekends but if he ever offered to let her make up the time, she said she was busy. She never asked to makeup the time either. Then, when she refused to help her daughter do a school project, that pretty much sealed my opinion of her... she actually told my husband that if I want to do 'mom' things (like bake cookies, which I guess really upset her) that I can help her with her school project too. Hearing her say that shattered my image of her being a wonderful mom because I can't imagine saying or doing that to my own child. It's been downhill since then and she has aspired to new lows as a mother, in my opinion. The only one I did not see coming was her moving away and giving us custody, that blindsided me because we had just spent several months (and thousands in lawyers) to fight for custody and she fought it so fiercely, I never imagined anything would cause her to give up her daughter so easily. Maybe that is why SD was so affected too, she saw how fiercely her mom fought to keep her, only to be discarded two weeks later for a stranger. (so, yes I have had a hard time not resenting and hating BM for doing that and I need to learn how to let that go, but it's hard)

I am just about in the middle of Jodi Picoult's "Handle With Care". I really like her books, she is very good at what she does, shows how everyday people handle life altering situations. I always feel like I've learned something, too. Joan Eileen, you might also like "The Nightingale" by Kristen Hannah. It also takes place in France during World War II. She is another of my favorite authors, I've read a number of her books, including "True Colors" . I thought it was the best yet until I read "The Nightingale" , it has far surpassed any previous book. In my humble opinion, anyway. Rusty

I like to collect housewares: dishes and glassware and centerpieces like vases and candleholders. I find tons of stuff at thrift stores. I brought home 3 large ceramic vases on my first spree, and I keep going back to try to find more. They are getting harder to find. Glass vases are plentiful, probably because of floral deliveries. I buy things on 50% off days for $1-3 that I would never pay full price for because I don't need them that badly. A footed bowl, a fish griller, teapots, a variety of stemware (cheap stuff and nice stuff), any set of four dishes that speaks to me (yesterday it was palm trees, other times it was sushi plates, oval multicolored glazed salad plates, williams sonoma tuscan style low bowls). I've picked up candles and holders from crate and barrel, pottery barn, a nambe bowl, wooden candlesticks and a vase. Lately I have been finding these realistic looking faux apples (pink ladies, red delicious, granny smith) that I had never seen before. I have a whole closet full of fun stuff to set the table with now. It's fun to go down the street to my local thrift store and see what I can find. It's almost like you can find things that you have been searching for that are not currently available in retail stores. You also see a lot of repetition, so you can find things that go together if you visit a variety of thrift stores regularly. I get the best finds when the staff is restocking the shelves. Otherwise a lot of the stuff is picked over. Now I am at the point where I have to get rid of something to make room for something new, so I only buy if I want to upgrade or if I can make a space for it or stack it. I still want to find some amazing blue stemmed wine glasses though. When I see a beautiful one, there are only 1-3 and I need four. Or irish coffee mugs - ceramic or glass without seams, in sets of four. Those are harder to find.

I prefer original works, but many of my originals are original prints and lithographs. A fine antique print can be very valuable and expensive (a Besler botanical can run anywhere from $2500-10,000 depending on rarity - unframed!), or can be quite affordable (Curtis botanicals and Cassell's poultry prints). Original prints are very good value compared to oils and watercolors. But I have some of those, too - some by local artists on the Vineyard. I've only bought a reproduction prints once and it was with great reluctance. My late husband had seen an oil painting by well known coastal artist, Ray Ellis. It was gorgeous - had the Edgartown Yacht Club in it as well as the light house. It was $40,000 so that was NOT going to be ours. A year later, a limited edition of signed giclee version became available - it was $750 unframed. My husband (a total non-materialist) wanted this print. He was dying and we ordered it. It came in several months later and went to be framed immediately. A few weeks later, he was in the hospital dying. Called the frame shop, they did a rush order and a friend picked it up and amazingly, hospital maintenance hung it at 5PM on a Friday! He died on Sunday night, but loved looking at his picture and all the memories it held for him. I had it over the bed in our bedroom for a few years but I just never really liked the fact that it was a giclee - it just looked very fake. I gave it to my son and he has it in his apt over his sofa - looks great there. I replaced it with an antique oil painting of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel that had belonged to the grand dame of the Cavalier Club - her family did not want it and I got it for a song. It looks much better than the giclee print. Collecting art is something that takes a lifetime. A local antique print dealer once told me that one need NEVER apologize for a blank wall - the right art will finally appear and one will buy it. In the meantime, no cheap "place holders". She was right and still is right.

Thanks for your replies----I'll look on barewalls and tell him he could contact an author directly, that may be an option for some books. Unfortunately, his two favorites are by J.D. Salinger and John Kennedy O'Toole! :(

Why not just take the book into a copy place and have them enlarge it?

We admired the art for the kids' section of the B&N with the wooden storybook characters everywhere. We decided to paint our own and they came out even better than the B&N art. Here's what we did: First we scanned the images and blew them up really big. Then DH used the blow ups as a wood cutting pattern and cut them out on his jigsaw. I used tracing paper and traced all of the nuances to the drawings onto the wood. Then I painted in. Finally, a couple of coats of poly to protect the paint, and picture hooks on the back.

I'm not at home so I don't have access to the pictures. If you're still looking for ideas, I can post a picture tonight.

Amazon.com also has some book jacket posters--including one for Catcher in the Rye. They also have a lot of Time magazine covers with literary figures (I didn't look through all of them to see the authors). I think all the posters are from second party sellers.

Art.com has a ton of book covers, including Catcher in the Rye, and you can get their posters screened onto canvas.

FedEx Kinko's, depending on the location, is not always cooperative about photocopying ANYTHING that might be copyrighted!!! Ours has strategically posted signs that tell you that they will not do that. At the self-serve machines, you might be able to get by with it, if you can find a machine that will enlarge something. But ours doesn't have a self-serve color copier, which is what you'd need probably.

One time, I was copying music at the self-serve, and one of the clerks came by. He politely informed me that I was not supposed to copy music. I looked at him, said, "First off, this music is out of print. Second, it has 10 pages that I'd like to be able to spread out across my piano in groups of 5. Both are legitimate reasons to photocopy." Actually, the first one isn't - you're still supposed to ask the copyright owner. But the second one is definitely a reason. I was most annoyed. I now find a different place for photocopying.

You can actually slightly alter the jacket after scanning it. You should probably vectorize in a program like Illustrator to avoid the pixilated look.

Thank you for all the replies and links above. I've been through the entire list of art.com and allposters (both are third party sellers to Amazon) and neither mounts those particular posters on canvas. (They don't offer that option for every poster they sell.) It's the screened canvas print with no frame that I really want and just can't find. I am not very experienced with arts and crafts and would not be able to stretch a canvas over a frame if I did manage to get the jacket copied. The Kinko's dilemma over copyrighted material is a moot point, as we live in the country at least an hour from a copy shop like that. I thought someone might have seen this same product somewhere for sale... someone must be manufacturing them, because a brand-new Barnes and Noble opened about an hour from us and had the very same artwork of stretched canvases with bookjackets either screened on or glued to the front.

Is it weird that this message popped up on the forum again but it's last date is 2011? Anyway, B&N in my city got those canvas book cover posters from buyenlarge.com (am I allowed to put that on here?). Use the pulldown menu to select book covers or classic book covers.

I think I figured out how to buy the canvas prints. From the Buyenlarge homepage (link below), click on the iposters.net box. From there, you can select your poster. When you add it to your cart, you get a new screen where you select the size. On the right side of that screen is a button to "upgrade to canvas". Good luck!

Funny to see this topped after so many years! I eventually got the book jacket art from Catcher in the Rye from Art.com, it was dry mounted on black wood with beveled edges. Never could find Siddartha, or A Confederacy of Dunces, his other middle school favs that are still in his top ten list.

I do love anything book related as artwork, and those Barnes and Noble canvases in the right titles would be great for a child's room, wouldn't they?
