What is your fav house porn? (Design mags!)

kaismom's thread on a Houzz article made me wonder what the TKO GW crowd read. Do you frequently buy or borrow interior design magazines? I confess that house porn - whether on-line or in a magazine is my guilty pleasure, I love them at little too much! I have stacks and stacks of magazines at my house.

If you do read these types of magazines, what are your favourites? Do you ever buy foreign design magazines?

Here are my favourites, I'd love to hear about yours!

- Arts&Decoration (this is a French magazine, but you really don't have to speak the language to appreciate it!)

- Elle Decor (UK)

- Maison Francaise (France)

- Living Etc. (UK)

- Ideal Home (UK) I just bought this one for the first time - seems pretty good.

- Style at Home (Canada)

- Canadian House and Home

Does anyone have any favourite Italian or German magazines - or Scandinavian magazines?

I don't really have any go-to US magazines, so I'd love recommendations on US magazines as well. I just assume I get the very best of American kitchens here on GW! :)

I also like Style at Home and Canadian House and Home.
Others are :

-I just bought a huge Kitchen and Bath magazine ( Austrailia) which was really good. You would like it sochi as it is pretty modern. I can't remember the exact name because my girlfriend was over on the weekend and scooped up all my mags!!

I'll have to be on the look out for the ones you mentioned.

My favorite is Dwell and Metropolitan Home for years.
I also actually like looking at Architectural Digest for those crazy big mansions featured in there.

Fine Homebuilding is fun to see really finely crafted homes that are "sensible" but not necessarily designed for show.

In zone 5 my favorite WS perennials are Lupine and aquilegias of all kinds. I also love little cheery blue forget me nots at their feet, and daisies. Lupine, really? Thought those should be direct sowed because they don't like xplanting, says on packet. I sowed one container just to see what would happen. Aquilegias I sowed a lot but this is my first year for those, was thrilled to find the Blue Star ones, hope they work. Swallowtail has some pretty all-blue alpine ones, may try those sometime, can't have it all. Yes, those FGM's are lovely and self-seed well, also grow the ones with the bigger seeds, Myosotis. A few spring ones bloom first year in the fall. I sowed a mix the other day of blue, pink and white. Prairie Sun Rud flops, maybe other varieties will, too. Not much that gets very tall doesn't flop around here, have lots of hoop stakes which I use for single stems and ugly tying, have to work on that. Daisies I love but am always looking for just the right white ones. I sure hope my Painted Daisies come back, they sulked in a container all summer, finally stuck them in the ground anyway and saw they had good root systems. I think Canterbury Bells are a biennial. You're right. They are, had to wait 2 years, then maybe they're done. Looks like foxgloves are, too, (except one yellow one a true perennial) and some will self sow. I used to tend to pass by biennials (or perennials) because I didn't want to wait. I'll have more favorites if I'm successful especially any perennial violas and anything else that turns out well. I must say finding this forum opened a whole new avenue for me, WS lots and if they don't work, so what? The ones that do will make up for it, and I can keep trying on ones I really want. I'm just getting rid of my backlog seed collection; a lot germinate and grow but don't look so great. Here's one Canterbury Bell that turned out to be really nice while it lasted. The trick is to have a cycle of plants going all summer, and I'm still pretty inexperienced and poor at designing like others here and elsewhere.

The only thing more daunting than a big open space is an incredibly overgrown jungle.... A blank canvas can be a *lot* less work [wry grin]. The link rhizo sent is great. [Thanks. Hadn't seen this before.] Especially the '101' thru '104' articles are good. Lays out basics for designing a landscape plan, in very readable form. But in case you are still in the "what on earth do I want to do with this place?!?" phase of things..... I don't know of any useful mag to suggest, but the notebook [maybe more of a scrapbook] is a good idea. Two parts here. First, it's important to figure out how you and yours want to *use* the outdoor space..... [Quiet walks along paths between garden beds? Big barbecues? Swingsets?] Second, in magazines, books, and on-line, look at lots and lots and lots of pictures. Note addresses of interesting garden bits that you notice around town. When you see pictures/vistas/details you like, collect them, **even if they cannot really fit your yard**. Then figure out *why* you like each one. Is it color? Contrast? Texture? Shape? Feel? Particular plants? And do you prefer the broad view in an open plan, or do you want interesting nooks and pockets of different things? Etc and etc. Whatever you want to do to make the yard more enjoyable for this year, just do it. But be sure to plant moveable things, not "bones". No trees or hard-to-move shrubs, unless you are sure of their placement. Best of luck, and enjoy!

Sorry to be so off topic here, but I read that she moved away from the house after her mother died. Does anyone know how she supported herself? She seemed like a little girl in an adult body and hadn't worked in years. Don't answer this if the move will answer it for me, but I couldn't help but wonder where the sons were during this time and why they didn't help out more. We are about a week away from putting our home on the market. It has taken us two years to completely renovate and fix things (new septic going in this week) so it is turn key and totally updated (except for one bathroom that has the pedestal sink and tub with sliding glass doors-realtor said it looks great). When I renovated my master bathroom and kitchen I did it with resale in mind. Neutral colors, subway back splash, stainless steel appliances, etc. I did this knowing that in our price range (low 500k) people expect all this. They do not expect to walk in and have to do one damn thing and I do agree that with the shows on HGTV many are disappointed when they do not see the homes looking like an after photo from a show they watch. My son and DIL are buying a new home, their first home. It needs some TLC. My DIL wants granite and expensive flooring in a small home in a neighborhood that will never give her that money back in return. My son has to bring her down to earth. She loves HGTV. Coincidence? Everyone wants a home like the after pictures on HGTV. I think it is great for people to dream, I think watching the shows help a person see what can be done if renovating or building a home and they aren't great at picking colors or putting floors, counters and tile together. It can give you ideas. My favorite show is House Hunters International. I love seeing the different places they film in and what the houses look like. I also watch Beach Front Bargain, Fixer Upper and Love It or List It is pretty fun to watch as well. I'm done with Property Brothers and Flip or Flop. Booorrrrinnnggggg.

I started a topic similar to this one on Home Decor forum a few months ago. I wanted to know which magazine would you buy without even flipping through it first.....like a subscription.

The ones I have just started to subscribe to are the following:

Elle Decor
House Beautiful
Architectural Digest, now that it is in "new hands".

I used to absolutely love In Style Home, but it's gone. And I know others will poo-poo this one, but I loved Oprah at Home. So many great ideas in that magazine.

I decided to pick those 3 because I felt if I was getting on a plane, and had to pick up some reading material for the plane, what would I choose without any 2nd thoughts. And those were my winners.

Since my kitchen is done, I'm not buying kitchen magazines, although I do choose a long line at the grocery store so I can look inside them. lol

Elle Decor and Old House Journal.

I used to love Domino, but it was put down so its kidneys could be donated to Arc Digest. The pompous letter that accompanied my first "free" issue of AD (to make up for my remaining Domino subscription) was probably the most entertaining piece of copy that rag ever published. I also used to subscribe to Met Home, but found it tiresomely modern.

I'm in rural western Canada, and without subscribing, I can't get too many shelter mags in the nearest small town. I should also mention that I'm definitely not a minimalist or a modernist : ). I used to subscribe to Style at Home and Canadian House and Home; now I get them at the library, along with Country Living (which seems awfully cutesy lately and I certainly wouldn't subscribe but am happy to bring it home for free). I can find sometimes find Elle Decor at the supermarket.

Whenever we go to a big city, I pick up Country Homes & Interiors (UK) and Homes & Gardens (UK), which are my two all-time favorites. From time to time I've been able to find Hus & Hem from Sweden, which I like but can't read lol. One of the few things I miss about living in a big city is having a Barnes & Noble nearby to buy foreign mags, though my husband is probably happy.

There are some great Swedish and Scandinavian design blogs written in English, and they're free : )

I used to like House Beautiful, but something has happened recently and it's not the same, possibly new editor. Haven't been able to see it enough to put my finger on it. I miss House & Garden (HG), especially when Dominique Browning was in charge, and Cottage Living. I know there has been so much change with the shelter mags for some years now, sigh...

Great thread!

I spent about 6 years pouring over magazines and the web to get design ideas, for our new build. I bought piles of used design and architectural magazines. I bought foreign and domestic magazines, but only subscribed to domestic. My favorites: Metropolitan Home, Dwell, House Beautiful, Sunset and the now defunct Western Interiors (bought out by Luxe).

The publications that most influenced me had specific images that became touchstones -- a picture of a kitchen with checkerboard floors in Axel Vervoordt Timeless Interiors, kitchens in Cottage Living Kitchens and Weekend Homes, the web site Belgian Pearls, and some old copies I had kept of Southern Accents (eg Bobby McAlpine's kitchen) and AD. By and large I found more useful ideas for the kitchen in general design books/shelter books than I did in the kitchen mags.

The only mainstream magazine I like is Elle Decor. Sometimes Country Living, but that's only because I have a country home (hopefully not in the kitschy gingham sense, but I try to give a nod to its roots in my design choices).

I much prefer blogs. My fave is the poorly named Apartment Therapy. There are tons of others... Linen and Lace, Cote de Texas, Habitually CHic, Braebourne Farm... and so on and so on. Since they all link to other wonderful sites, you will just find yourself deluged.

I also like to to look at websites for high end architectural firms, in certain ares of the country.

Lastly, since I was trying to channel a bit of french country, I looked at villas for rent in Provence etc.
