Orepac wood core primed doors have a paper veneer!

I wish I knew this before ordering about $3000 worth of doors and closets. I bought the doors (Orepac craftsman shaker 3 panel 760) doors via special order at HD. The were sold to me as solid wood. A number of the doors got wet during a recent flood and I found the wet parts started to bubble. When I started digging into the damaged areas I found they have a pressed paper veneer over a wood core. I haven't concluded the core is 100% wood but so far whereever I've scraped up paper I've found wood.

I'm trying to determine if I can repair the doors but I'm starting to conclude they are hopeless.

You will probably find wood stiles and rails and hardboard, or something similar for the cores. On the site I do nto see where they say either solid wood or man made core but my gut would say a primed door that does not state "solid wood" would be made the way your door is. Now if the salesman at HD told you they were solid wood I would not be surprised as most of their sales people leave much to be desired in the way of knowledge especially on millwork which is why I always recommend not purchasing these types of products from them unless you are 100% certain YOU know what your getting and even then........

okay.....so what I'm hearing you say is.....not to buy pre-primed woodwork, but the doors may be a possibility. ?? We definitely don't want hollow doors, but we haven't decided on whether to get solid core or wood. We're going to go and look tomorrow. Which would you buy if it were your home and money was no object? (just hypothetically speaking) :-) I've heard real wood has more of a chance of warping. But is that really a problem? We live in Indiana, and we use AC or heat to keep our home at a moderate temperature. sombreuil_mongrel, you're saying that even doors sold as wood doors are NOT solid wood? They're veneer? Can that really be the case? Thanks for your replies!

It's a nice door but not as square as wood. We are, in fact, putting those in during our remodel. We chose this over wood partly for cost reasona and mostly because we wanted to use something that is more stable in a high humidity costal environment to prevent door sticking. If you elect to go this direction be sure to prime and paint all surfaces so that they don't take on moisture. The door is MDF and it does feel very heavy/solid. I am only using procore for the bedroom doors for noise reduction.

I have pine, just don't have anything with a thin veneer to practice on. Now, if I use the grain filler and don't sand down past it, won't it show vertical lines down the door where the scratches are? If I *do* sand down just past it, what's the difference b/t that and using the shellac like I suggested? In fact, I've been using the shellac not only as a sanding sealer/wash coat under the gel stain, but also over as a type of grain filler on pine. And I have used it as a grain filler on oak - the grain shows through, but it feels smooth. So won't the scratches show, no matter what they're filled with, unless I sand down past them? The scratches aren't deep enough to feel with a fingernail, but are clearly visible, and I found with the first couple of doors (no shellac) that hand-sanding starting with 150 or even 180 grit wasn't enough to take them out. Now, maybe 220 grit on the ROS? But since the veneer's so thin on this piece, I'm afraid of sanding through. So hand-sanding it is, as you suggested, just wondering about shellac (which I have , Sealcoat) vs grain filler (which I'd have to order). Thanks

Since you have so many doors why not experiment to see if the grain is acceptable. Remember it shows up when light hits at an angle so if you don't see much in the way of bright spots now you won't see much when painted. Lower gloss shows fewer bright spots too. I repainted the kitchen with satin and I think the oak grain is somewhat less noticeable now. I like the grain though. It gives the eye something to see rather than scan to find imperfections on that enormous plain surface. It was enormously restful painting out my luan doors. I didn't realize how depressing or dominating the dark slabs were in my little house. If you use a palm sander it's hard to sand through. It's when I am hand sanding I put pressure on spots I think need more and then get into trouble. Hope your doors are better quality than my luan doors, the skins are thin and flexible and if I really went to town I could outline the frame under the skin.

There's nothing wrong with hollow core veneered doors--as long as you're told that's what they are.

Orepac's website is vague. But the "door" page lists four categories distinguishing "interior" doors from stile and rail wood doors. Interior doors come either "hollow" or "solid core." And now we know what's on the surfaces.

Check your order with HD to see if it says solid wood anyplace.

It's as I suspected in my earlier reply, the "solid wood core" is made of short lengths of mostly knots, finger-jointed together, and covered with a masonite or MDF veneer.
They are execrable.

I feel for you, and may be in the same boat someday if ours gets wet. We had hollow core doors from the 70's that were not taking the paint well, so the contractor went and bought new. I know he got the cheapest he could find.
I once was about to order some cabinets from a local shop (forget the brand). The sales guy happened to mention a new subdivision where they were installing the same thing. We were able to just go into the houses - they were wide open, windows and all. Now why they had installed these cabinets before putting the flooring in is beyond me! And, being a very rainy season here -- many had paper veneers that were bubbling and already peeling. We went back and thanked him for telling us to look at them, and said thanks but no thanks.

Yeah, they were sold to me as solid wood, and with a price to justify. These were about 170/door, whereas a moulded hollow core jeldwen door at HD is about 80. I'll have to check the paperwork but I'm pretty sure it says wood. Even so there's no chance HD is going to do anything about it. My front door is a orepac, fir wood and is very nice, so I was surprised to see such poor quality with these. Interestingly the cheaper jeldwen moulded doors I got for my basement survived just fine with no warping/bubbling etc. Oh well, live and learn.

Wait for the sales! I picked up Masonite six-panel moulded doors from HD for C$19 about three weeks ago.
