My name is Tanner, and I am a student at the University of Florida. Along with my group, I am conducting research on what retirees and future retirees desire in a retirement community. Please take our survey at the following link if you are a retiree or are beginning to think about retirement. Regardless of whether you match the criteria of this survey, please send this to people in your address book who you think can take this survey or who will be able to forward it to those who can. The more responses we get the more accurate our data will be.

I don't know how enthused I am about the prospect of living in a community limited to a lot of old crocks ...

... I think that I prefer living in a community where there's a cross-section of ages ... including kids (except when the little buggers get too noisy, of course!).

hmm. older man living by himself? it's entirely possible that his social skills died (or just left) with his wife and he's simply got no idea how to talk to 30-somethings... we're the babies in our 'unplanned' retirement strip (not a residential community, just a neighborhood that's gotten old) and it's taken nearly two years for them to get with the idea that DH's long hair and leather jacket didn't come with a whole bunch of OTHER longhairs in leather jackets... or that my cobalt blue hair, tie-dyes, and such didn't mean I was going to be selling acid to their grandkids, or, as one of the ladies finally admitted 'I wasn't going to be sacrificing small animals in my back yard'... I was tempted to bring some of our old co-workers by just to give them something to redefine 'freak' for them- but then the dancer and her boyfriend moved in to the only rental on the block- and after 6 months of 3 AM arguements, visits from the cops, and big old harleys... we look like angels :) 3 months isn't a lot of time to get to know people- especially old people, who have social standards that I have trouble keeping track of sometimes- and my folks are in their 80's now, so I SHOULD know how to make like a proper lady ;) you'll be fine- don't take it to heart.

My parents lived in a CCRC for 10 years and I worked in one for 3 years. I really like the concept, I'll be moving into one in 20 years or so. My parents moved through all the levels of care while they were there, both died in the nursing home (as they should have). They loved it there, and the system worked very well. Does she (or her estate) get all her buy in money back when she leaves? That actually depends on the kind of license it has, the best ones do give it all back (no interest though). She's young enough to get a lot of use out of the place. I would assume for her $900/month she gets a meal a day in the dining room? Usually, at that low monthly rate, she'll pay for extra services as she need them, which I think is a good idea. Make sure she understands what they are. Those extra services might include cleaning service, home health aide assistance, rides off the campus to social events, doctors' appointments etc. She'll probably love it, and have to pencil you into her social calender, she'll just be so busy! Thanks, that puts us at the same age. I do understand why you would want to find other living areas. My circumstances are only slightly different, my DH is my age, but has health problems. It sounds as though you are giving this good thought. Let's concentrate first on you. Make a list of the activities you like and would like to pursue. This might include book discussion groups or tennis (your choices). Should your husband become ill or pass, you would have friends in these areas as well as church. Secondly, a retirement community may or may not be of assistance in the situation you describe. If all are elderly, they might not be able to assist. So look for community services available. My FIL was a quadriplegic and had outside help to come in with bathing, etc. He was a large man also. I believe he hired a nurse's aide. Also, you would want to check out the hospital and medical services in the area. The cost of living in a retirement community and other areas around that may not be classified as such but would offer the same types of benefits. Personally after I had found areas I was interested in, I would take a visit to these areas and stay as long as I could to determine if I liked the area. Chamber of Commerce, realty companies,government both state and federal and other online sites will have lots of information including rain fall, average temperatures, community services and clubs, population, average incomes, etc. You have probably thought out most of these things, but I hope I have given you a little info!

Hi cheery one, I'm pleased that you're happy with the "pro"s of your retirement. And somewhat sad that you're feeling that you're not keeping up to the mark of what you'd hoped/planned to do. If you feel the need to beat yourself over the back about that - make sure it's with a wet noodle ... and only five strokes, O.K? As for the "average" retiree, I don't feel that I have too much of a handle on that ... and wonder what level of expertise you may claim in that department? I think that it's important to do things that we can be pleased with ourselves for having done, at the end of the day ... week ... month ... year. Something that I note to have been scarcely mentioned in this thread so far is the need that all of us retirees have to concern ourselves about (as well as people in the workforce) is the erosion of the value of our income (and, for us retirees, our assets) due to inflation, every year for about the last 80. There hasn't been much increase in incomes in recent years, except for the wealthy few ... but the prices keep going up ... and for most of us, those prices of much of the goods and services that we buy have been and are going up faster than the official rate of inflation. When we put money in the bank, or buy bonds, etc. which pay us the same number of dollars after several years that we gave them in the first place, apart from the "rent" on the money, it isn't only taxes and living expenses that much come out of the earnings ("rent on the money"), but an allowance for inflation, as well, in order to keep the purchasing power of those assets equal in ten years to what it is now. My mother just went into Riderwood in MD. They have everything you could possibly want. All she had to do was sign over everything she owns.

The web site says something like: "You never have to go outdoors again". Sounds like a deluxe prison to me!

And if she should happen to die as early as next week ...

... how much of her asset is to be returned to her estate, by chance?

Or ... are they running a prison (no parole) for her money, as well?

With regard to the body ... the mind ... the emotions ... the spirit ...

... the whole schmeer of one's life!

Those who don't ... have a shorter life expectancy ... I'm told (on fairly good authority). A shorter quality of life experience, at any rate.

Hi,Ol Joyful! Happy Easter!!

No, 2001 was when I discovered this wonderful website.

Riderwood has so many things an 87 year old woman can really use - tennis courts, swimming pools, a gym - are you reading betweeen the lines, here? As for the disposition of the estate, well, we will see. Since I have no idea of what she signed to get in there, I'm prepared for some type of clause that they keep whatever is left. The people who own the Riderwoods - they are located all over the USA, I don't know about Canada - are extremely wealthy. The website shows a photo of the Bush yacht on the owner's desk. Doesn't that say realms? My mother is so excited because she will get to keep her dog and get FREE COFFEE every day...
