Looking for vinyl cedar shake siding

Hi, I have always posted in the garden section, but started looking through the home section and found a lot of info. I am looking for a cedar shake vinyl siding. I have nailite on my house with no problems so far. I am building a barn and am looking for something that will be a close match. Can anyone give me some ideas on what there out there. I know of Certain Teed.

We looked at many before deciding on Cedarway and resided our whole house - love it. My DH did the install and is an engineer so was very picky about product especially corner construction. We didn't want' flat corner boards, we wanted shingled corners and they had the best design by far. They even did a custom color for us because honestly - their colors leave a lot to be desired (unless they've added recently). We picked an old discontinued Alcoa color and they were able to match it.

Initially I wanted one of the 'weathered' colors so we concentrated looking at Foundry and others who offered that but their products just couldn't compare to Cedarway.

I am considering a foundry shake but I don't like their colors. Where did you find Cedarway? Do you have pics posted?

We have cedar impressions in clay on our house. We haven't noticed any significant fading. Our understanding is, the darker the color, the more fading you will see. We pulled the colors from the stone siding. You said part of your house...what is the rest of your house? Are there colors you should coordinate with there?

In the Same Boat here ... 115 year old house, cedar shakes and clapboards sheathed in vinyl. We have removed some of it and found it either in great shape or discovered a few less than distressing things (some minor wet rot, a missing foot or so of clapboard on a porch pier). On our side is that the house was left just stained (unpainted) until the mid 60's, then in the mid-late 70 was sided with vinyl. and it IS cedar ... We dont know what well find elsewhere(we removed about 7% so far) but think it will be far less expensive to remove and repair than leave the vinyl and watch more wet rot happen (ok, hidden beneath the vinyl, but you know what I mean). Neighbor houses of the same vintage (also cedar and stained for the first 50 years of their lives) are in pretty good shape ... you'll never know till you take it off ... My biggest concern is that our house is a full 4 stories tall ... and I am scared to death of heights ... YIKES

From the photo. it looks as though the shingle siding just hasn't weathered yet. The siding was probably new within the last year. Give it some time and and the colour will soften. You can already see that the shingles down toward the bottom of the walls (where they're more exposed to the elements) are beginning to gray. If you like the naturally weathered look, just be patient. It will take 2 or 3 years for them to weather gracefully. If you're impatient, shingles can be painted or stained, but at this point, you'd probably have to power-wash them first to remove the staining that has started as a natural part of the weathering process. A tinted stain could then be applied to the cleaned shingles. If you choose to paint, a primer should be applied before paint. Personally, I prefer the look of naturally weathered shingles, so I'd be inclined go that route. Not only does it look better in my opinion, but it requires less maintenance.

Thank you all for your comments. I am still so torn because the trim on the siding is rotting away, especially on the back of the house that faces north. Granted, this wood is probably 25-30 years old... I am concerned that it will begin to rot again, when new wood is replaced. Our window sills are rotted and even windows are rotted. I assume this is from rain and maybe it can't dry out enough on the sides because the houses are close together? I just hate to waste a huge chunk of money on painting/staining the existing siding and have it all go to waste. It is going to be $18k to do the hazmat removal of the lead peeling paint, replace rotted wood and then put new wood siding on the addition. It's not like this is a $5000 job... Another concern is that I just found out a lot of moisture gets into the walls and seeps out of the house? Is this true? From cooking and showering? So this can cause the paint to fail prematurely if there is no vapor barrier, which there wouldn't be, since the cedar is original to the house in 1918. I also have concerns about going over cedar with vinyl for the same reason. I am concerned that mold could build up under the new vapor barrier that they would put up... I remember one siding company said it is a bad idea to not remove the old siding and this may have been why. We have had issues with mold in various places like under the front porch, but once proper ventilation was installed, it went away. I just don't want to have everything sealed up to the point that no water vapor can escape and is encapsulated in between the layers of siding, causing mold growth. I'm probably over thinking it, but we are stuck in which ever direction we choose, and neither is "cheap".

oops - imagine my surprise when I googled to get you a link - seems Atlantis Plastics (they manufactured Cedarway products) has filed chapter 11. But I did find this link from Qualified Remodeler so it looks as if Fortis Plastics has taken over. What they have pictured is rough sawn and not the type of shake we used but we did look at it and its very nice, just not appropriate for a colonial.

Here's our house - completed a year ago, and I couldn't be happier with the look. There was almost no waste with this product which made my husband very happy. You can't find a seam on any long runs. I have tons of photos in process or close ups if you want to see more detail on the material.

Quality Edge has some of the best looking you can find. They are terrible at pictures /samples of their products online though. Very realistic. Priced similar to Certainteed which is also pretty nice. GP also has a pretty nice line. Crane, Atlantis Plastics, Royal designer Norandex, mastic and others are manufacturers. I can link some pictures if desired. I have a few in other threads on porches and decks and New Homes forums
