Granite overhang...Am I too picky?

The granite in my kitchen was installed today. My island has two sides for seating. I was told that the overhang would be 10 inches on these sides. Once installed I though it looked a little strange so I measured...8 inches on one side and 11 inches on the other. I don't think that I am satisfied. Am I being too picky about this?

no, i don't think so, but you better be there when they try to take it off so they dont ruin your cabinets and then make sure they put it on right...sounds like these guys need to be managed (babysat)

If you move it over 2" to make the 8" overhang 10", you'll be short an inch on the other side. You'll only have 9"left for an overhang.

I agree that you shouldn't "settle" for something that you really don't want . . . just because it's free. I know that in planning my house I have certain "must haves" chosen, and they are 100% non-negotiable, but other things don't matter so much, and I'd reconsider my first choice . . . if something free came along. I would very much appreciate a friend offering me the choice! I'd make two suggestions: - When you refuse something, do so in the absolute most kind way: "Thank you so, so much for thinking of me. I've appreciated your other cast-offs so very much, and I can't wait to see them in use. You've been so very helpful with my project. But I'm really set on ___ for that particular item. I do hope someone else can use these things, and again it was so very kind of you to remember me." You don't want to close down future potential gifts by being too abrupt, and a simple, "Only if it's soapstone" might've been seen as ungrateful. I'm not saying you were wrong at all -- just perhaps a little brusk in the delivery. - Second, before you turn down stone (I assume nice stone), do consider ALL your needs -- not just your main kitchen countertops. Could that stone be used for a bathroom vanity? A coffee table topper? An outdoor kitchen or bar?

Some of the posts here remind me of when the tile setters, GC and cabinet maker were here having a confab. After the walls and windows were done, the cabinet maker found an extra inch and wondered where I wanted it. Naturally, I chose countertop! So when we were talking about window trim, they were terribly concerned because I might have that inch more wall showing. Since my priority is countertop, I thought about it too quickly for them to notice and said no problem. They were shocked!!!! One said in surprise to another, "She's so easy!" I'm not. I just know my priorities and what I can live with. So my wish for Firstyear, and all the other TKOs, is contractors who care more about the bits that are a little off than you do. :-) Oh, and they figured out how to install the trim so that I get that inch of wall on both sides. And get my inch of countertop. So I wish for all of you to have good problem solvers too...

granite counter-top seams ... are we being too picky?

These are my pics of my countertops placed Friday June 22, 2018. I cried looking at these seams. It looks so cheap. Fabricator explains that's the way it comes. I explained that I shouldn't be able to see the seams so clearly. It looks so unprofessional. They ended up taking them back to their warehouse. In hopes they say if it is quality control will try and fix it just to make it look better. Otherwise I will have to pay an additional fee for them to come out again to install. I just don't know what to do and if still looks the same. This is the first time I've replaced my counters in 24 years. I don't and can't live with it. looking at this for another 24 years. It looks so cheap and it really was not it's a lot of money to me. I hope fingers crossed that they will fix this problem. They never told me that there would be such seams. I thought the edges were done by a machine and it would be all one piece. I have read up on this and now understand there are seams. But now I do know that they should not look like this. If they are good fabricator you shouldn't be able to see them so clearly. I will find out next week what happens.

You're not being picky, but fortunately I don't think it's as bad as you fear. Keeping in mind that I'm no expert on this, I think that your installer can come back and make that seam smooth and level without too much trouble. He/they can definitely fix the resin blob issue. Try speaking to the installer himself first, and if you're not comfortable with his response, contact the retailer. If installer A can't/won't finish the job, insist that someone else come and do it. If you get no traction with the retailer you can always say you're going to contact your credit card company and withhold payment until the job is finished. I think that's all it is - a matter of finishing the job appropriately.

So move it over 1.5". Done.

I'd make them come back and shift it. I would be really unhappy about not having the 10" I wanted on each side.

Check your measurements against your drawings (which should have been signed off by you). If it is not according to the drawing, have them redo it.

You have every right to ask them to fix it. Pharaoh is
right check your drawings but don't be afraid to ask for
something specific.

When I had my counters put in I realized a WEEK later
that I wanted a tiny 1/4 trim so I could fully open my
refrig door. At the time I was content but later I realized
I did not like it and wanted them to return to make it
the way I wanted it.

They came for free, fixed it and had no issues with my
request. A good installer wants to make you HAPPY. They
should come out free of charge and pleased to make this
counter exactly as you wish.

Be calm, firm, clear with your request and painfully polite.
You can do it!!!

Thanks for the responses.

It isn't as simple as just moving the granite. The two sides are 90 degrees and the granite isn't wide enough to shift it.

I have sent an email to the installer and I already had a meeting scheduled for 11:30 today. I wanted to give him a heads up so that when we meet he may have some answers when we meet.
