HELP! Am I being picky or is this a crappy granite seam

OK all, this is my first granite countertop ever and was purchased through a national chain. We got it installed yesterday and the seam is unlevel and is a groove. I at least expected it to be perfectly flat. the installer left a couple of hunks of resin stuck on the countertop. I have seen pictures online of seams the are perfectly smooth and and don't jump out at you. Am I expecting to much?

You're not being picky, but fortunately I don't think it's as bad as you fear. Keeping in mind that I'm no expert on this, I think that your installer can come back and make that seam smooth and level without too much trouble. He/they can definitely fix the resin blob issue. Try speaking to the installer himself first, and if you're not comfortable with his response, contact the retailer. If installer A can't/won't finish the job, insist that someone else come and do it. If you get no traction with the retailer you can always say you're going to contact your credit card company and withhold payment until the job is finished. I think that's all it is - a matter of finishing the job appropriately.

Kitchencraft has been very good about replacing questionable doors/trim for me, so you shouldn't have a problem if HH requests a new one under a "warranty claim." I have the darker colour (expresso) and one of my cover panels had to be reordered. It came in a slightly different stain colour than the rest, and they just sent another which matched better (different lot numbers I guess). If the "drip" is in a noticable spot I would get them to reorder. As for the crown, I do agree it's not that noticable, but I'm sorry to say it is a bit funny/weird, especially for how much I know you paid for the cabinets. Sorry. They should have ordered different height cabinets for your fridge surround to allow for a bigger crown frieze (I think that's what it's called) or placed your other cabs at a higher height so it would not be as much of a difference. I truly feel terrible writing this to you, but I have a feeling you suspect it's off anyway. It's not bad looking... just for what you ordered it should have been less noticable, even if your ceilings are off. I also know what it's like to be near the end and just want it done (like I think your DH is).

The toekick issues is owned by the KD. It's an upgrade that has to be chosen in the software, and she didn't choose it. Thank you so much, Cooks Kitchen, for this info because you saved me from totally embarrassing myself!!! I swapped the two cabinets on that side at the last minute so the order was likely correct but there were "unintended consequences". I'm so glad I realized this before I contacted the builder and KD about it or I would have lost all credibility. So, for this item, the fix is on me. I'll probably install baseboard trim. A racked frameless oven cabinet is a big deal. Be sure that is actually the issue. Do a 3,4,5, measure on it. And measure the diagonals That's the plan, but I think it's just the face frame that isn't square. The frame is attached in the middle of the cabinet, above the bottom drawer and below the top doors. At the crown and the floor the cabinet appears level, however, we will be sure to confirm that. I sent the full punch list to the builder and he seems ok so far. We're meeting tomorrow to walk through together and he has already scheduled a meeting with the KD. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again!

April, I would see if your city/county has a registrar of contractors and report him. This is unsafe and the tile job is terrible. He should NOT be doing remodeling homes. I would not give up and replace this at your cost quite yet. There has to be some recourse on your part because these are his errors and they need to remedied, hopefully at his cost. If you can get an inspector out there, do not forget to ask about the WATERPROOFING system. If this was not done correctly, it will likely need to be torn out. If this guy did any other work on your house, you may consider hiring another contractor or inspector to review it to ensure that other shoddy or dangerous work was not done. Editing to add: In my state, the registrar of contractors will send an inspector to review the work. They will give the contractor a chance to remedy it, at their cost.

I recommend you/someone is on site in the morning. Take photos of where they are when they start the day and then someone drops by just before the end of their day - do the same thing. Take photos and then post photos....each day if you must. Start a new thread and tell us that you are posting new photos daily with morning/evening photos each time you post. We will keep an eye on how things are going and will point out a 'Stop! Don't let them go any further!' statement if we have to. You can take a photo of the demolition of this cr@p. Then start with new photos of the redo. If you see wall studs with nothing on them or in them...great. Take a pic. If you see studs with plastic stapled to it but nothing else....great. Take a pic. To you it may not look like much, but to us we will be able to spot the 'little' things that make BIG differences. You have a stand-up GC. S/he said it's a do over IMMEDIATELY. I know this is disheartening, but we have seen the worst option possible: we've seen GCs tell homeowners (as in, "Hey Lady, let thems guys does the jobs youse's paying 'em to") that nothing is wrong, or that they are too picky or that 'what do you expect'? Etc. And we've seen GS swear at anyone who questions them and drive off...with the homeowner's PRODUCTS in the back of their truck! Nope. Not kidding! They have ghosted homeowners to the point of $20K lost in payments and materials. I know. It doesn't make you feel much better (especially when it is someone else's misfortune) but you have a better than average situation. You have a GC who is taking this down and getting a new crew. That is MORE than many, many people have gotten. I know. One would hope a pro would offer more....but the building industry in N. America (for the most part) is the Wild Wild West. That idea of, "Big Government is Bad Government" is part and parcel for the situation we are all living through. Chin up...you are on the RIGHT TRACK. Trust us on this one. You are going to be OK...your GC is doing what s/he SHOULD be doing.

they are suppose to come out today to take another shot at it. I guess I don't understand people that do poor work the first time hoping that someone will not complain. I hope they can fix it. While its "Not That Bad" I guess. When I made my purchase. I didn't pay for "Not That bad" I paid for a quality countertop.

Your description sounds like it needs to be fixed. I can't see it in the pix, but that may be my monitor. It can't hurt to make them fix it if it bothers you. Filling in the groove should be easy...

suzannesl post was perfect - I was too reactionary & not very helpful. It's just that I get so tired of homeowners who get these types of jobs from big box stores. One of my contractor hubby's clients just experienced the same thing only worse (despite hubby's warnings) Hubby's advice was Suzannesl's.

I hope they fixed it for you - it IS totally fixable...or else you should take suzannesl's advice.

Well I would say that purchased from a big box store or not that the customer has a right to get a quality job. I've had wonderful jobs done by big box stores and horrible jobs done by a so-called specialty shop. And vice versa.

I would insist on the seam being done correctly. No matter who you purchased your countertop from. I hope they do it right for you. Good luck.
