Bad granite or am I being picky?
Comments (6)The photos are very hard to see detail for sure. Uba-tuba is generally a stone that can be spot polished on -site. Repolish the entire piece-no way. First -off any fabricator who says a type of stone will be the same or cookie cutter doesnt know stone. Every slab I have ever seen is a unique piece period.I never call features on a stone defects but for example a fabricator friend of mine who regularly gets in containers of slabs examines each and every one that comes thru the door. He notes any marks(eyesore)(damage) with a wax marker. He documents every single feature on every slab. In your case he probably would have rejected this slab or tryed to refinish it if it wasnt resined(dyed). To me and again it is hard to see the details in your slab. I see some marks that look like someone tried to repair the marks or scratches on the slab but couldnt match the original finish. Maybe the slab was purchased from salvage but it doesnt look good even in the blurry pics. If the damages on the slab are not all over the place and the slab hasnt been resined a bonafide stone refinisher that is familar with polishing granite on site could probably repair this including the holes. A good refinsher will use a clear adhesive that will not be noticeable after the repair. A color matched blob of polyester epoxy will stand out if not properly done. Go to another fabricator and take a look at their slabs and you will see the difference. Talk to them and I think you will see a difference again. If you arent happy let your present fabricator or installer make it right. If you could send in better pictures that would be great. Comments (19)Wow, it is good to know that lots of people would have 60k for their kitchen renos these days. And they say we are heading towards a recession. Since I spend about 50k, I guess I would be below the average group according to Sophie's estimation. Of course one need to consider the size of the kitchen. I think 60k would be for a larger kitchen. My kitchen is considered medium size. I live in Canada so I don't know what the average money spend on kitchen is. Well like I've mentioned before, this is my first kitchen reno and I learned a lot from it. I had never thought to look below the cabinets at the showroom. Unfortunately at the showroom, they did not have the models of the kitchen I chose. They had other styles but it never occur to me to look below the cabinets. Of course they don't have on display the type of breakfast island I have chosen. That definitely wasn't an option. According to the "pros" here, I guess I am a picky customer. Now that I've learned from my mistakes, I would definitely advised my friends about them. I have a few of them, waiting for my reno to be done and see whether they will do it too. I do appreciate all you taking the time to comment and share your opinions. Hopefully, when people read these posts, they will be more aware of the "issues" when they tackle their future renovations....See MoreAm I being to picky on my white solid surface counter install?
Comments (8)"They said they would come back to cut 1/2" off the right and put a 1/2" wide filler on the left. Is this the right way to fix it? And is it even worth fixing (we can install a filler piece on that side if need be)?" Technically, yes, this is the right way to fix it, but without pulling the tops it's going to be difficult particularly with a solid color. If you can install a filler on the other side and fix this, that's what I'd recommend doing. A stove off a fraction of an inch is much less noticeable than a poorly done seam at eye level. Your right side seam appears to be contaminated. I'd do an insert repair with an angled router and a straightedge. Check to see if this seam has been reinforced below. There should be solid surface blocking bridging the seam with all tool marks removed. I don't recommend hard seams in this area; the seams are too short and walls move too much. I have two soft silicone seams in my own kitchen behind my stove. With the appliance in place, they are fairly inconspicuous, but they always look like clean seams, not cracked and contaminated ones....See MoreAm I being too picky about this paint color?
Comments (23)The wisdom of painting a house before you put it on the market is not really the point here, except that painting the whole house a "neutral" colour was what the former owners of this house undoubtedly thought they were doing. This current home owner bought the house in spite of the colour, not because of it and is now faced with the not inexpensive task of repainting. All that said, my main point is that it is impossible to pick the optimal complex neutral paint colour to go on these walls without knowing what your decor is going to be. Even if you are using all you old existing furniture, the light exposure your new home gets may render the colour used in your previous home differently. And no, you don't have to paint the whole house the same colour. You're not matching the floor, you're matching bedding in the bedrooms, upholstery, area carpets and drapery in the LR, and perhaps a shower curtain or the wall tiles in the bathroom....See Morelgtn
