Demolition has begun!

After months of research and reading up on GW, I want to thank all of you for your insight and willingness to share your experiences and expertise. Your kitchens are amazing! My DH and I created our new kitchen plans with the help from all of you!

While the planning stage was really fun, the reality has sunk in that there is no turning back now! We're on day 2 of demolition. The electrician is expected in the next day or so, appliances are being delivered tomorrow, floors should be in Monday and there is talk of cabinets being installed by the end of next week. This is our 2nd remodel experience (master bedroom addition previously done) so we are pretty familiar with the plans going completely down the flusher. But with high hopes and good vibes, hopefully it will all come together sooner than later.

What a coincidence. Our demolition started yesterday too. This is our first remodel experience and what a way to start! We are redoing the mudroom/laundry room also. In the two days, they have brought down walls, pulled up flooring, removed cabinets and appliances and they are only a team of two! While I can't even manage to fill up two bags of leaves while I keep my 3.5 y.o and 17 month old occupied in the back yard.

They will be putting in two new windows tomorrow!

Sorry to steal your thunder but I just had to share. Maybe we can be remodel sisters ;-)

Congrats on starting! I think I will be having demo starting in a week or two myself. What a clean job they have done. Wishing you the best during the most stressful part of the journey! Can't wait to see the completed pictures.

Great discussion... I pass by a piece of property a couple times a week. There are some interesting trees on the property. There was a home on the property about 2 years ago, but it was bought by a developer who demolished it and put up a sign stating that he was going to build a multi-home development there. That sign came down last fall to be replaced by a for sale sign. I've been watching the plants as I pass by for a while and this week one of my more desired plants made itself known from something that I thought I had identified. I asked my wife what she thought of the plant (asking because I want to eventually get one, not the one I was showing her) and she said that I should just call the number on the sign and make an offer for the plant. I would have never considered just taking it (as I have been a victim of plant theft more than once as I grow unusual things). If the property is still unsold come next fall, though, I might just take my wife's advice and call and make an offer for the plant. As she pointed out, the property isn't generating any money for them now and they might go for a good price on something that would likely be torn out regardless. The plant isn't too terribly rare, its just the kind of plant where getting a young one is a crap-shoot because you don't know what to expect from the flowers until it is of blooming age and the one I saw has particularily nice flowers. ~Chills

Cabinet Demolition has started!

I wanted to give an update on our kitchen remodel. We took out all the cabinets by mid April. We sold them all with the countertop and the cooktop and wall oven for $1000! I was pretty psyched about that. Then we took off to Grand Cayman for a week of relaxation. We got back this past weekend and took everything out of the first floor (except for 1 room) and taped up the doorways and the sunken living room because this week my floors are being sanded and refinished! Here are some pictures. Our cabinets get delivered a week from today! But before that DH needs to recess the fridge wall. He says he will only do it 3" since that is the only size fridge that will fit thru our door into the house from the garage. But I might try to make him change his mind. Our main front door is wider and we might want a deeper fridge some day. We are also cutting the sheetrock out from the ceiling and redoing the recessed lighting, so that needs to be done before cabinets. And the plumbing for the prep sink and pot filler. And we need to decide on window size and purchase windows. We also moved our laundry from the small mudroom off of the kitchen to the 2nd floor. So now I have a laundry room off of the master bedroom. DH is out of town for work now so after these floors are finished there will be a week or so with nothing going on.

Ok, I have narrowed down my tile choices to a Mexican Travertine or a Porcelain tile with a natural stone "look". Would appreciate input from everyone regarding which tile you think would be a better match for my granite and cabinets. I am leaning toward the Travertine but it is much more expensive and I suppose a little more maintenance involved with the sealing every year. I have never had natural stone tile before so any advice or tips on the pros and cons of Stone vs Porcelain would be appreciated also. :) Oh... and the sample tiles are 4x4s but I will be using 6x6 tiles. Well, DH came home from work a little while ago and we both stared at them again for a bit. His opinion has not changed at all and he prefers the warmth and depth of the top one. I didn't mention the colors above but the top is Minwax Early American and the bottom is Special Walnut. The EA just looks different (in a good way) on our floors and in our light than it does in the sample piece in the store and in some of the pictures online. I never would have thought to try it but when our flooring guy saw the picture that was his immediate suggestion I do feel we need some warmth in the room to balance out the gray and white, so I think we will start with the lighter one.

Neeter3148 - no worries, GW is the perfect place for all of us to share our experiences. Good luck to you as well and I am looking forward to following your events too! We waited 11 years to reno the kitchen - first traveling, taking care of other needed house fixes and then, most importantly, having kids. Now that my boys are 4 and 5 1/2 the no kitchen transition is not so bad. Our plans are modest but with all the right changes, we're certain the new kitchen will not only fit our laid-back style, but we also won't be stealing the kid's college tuition :).

Mustbnuts, I'll follow along right there with ya! Thanks for the well wishes. Our "crew" has been a one man show, so far. Our GC's father is his right hand man. He is AMAZING! He's neat, beyond tidy & 100 percent type-A personality and loves to work alone. His main expertise is late 1800 Victorians, so we know we are in good hands. He actually commented that our 1965 rancher is so great - no surprises. That was music to my ears! He has all the perfect combo of traits for my job.

vwhippiechick, thanks to you & your DH we did not have to bust our budget. We are doing SS and doing it ourselves...who am I kidding? DH is doing it himself. All the information you provided on GW was so great and detailed that my husband is ready to install.

With that, the electrician didn't show today - something came up. Hopefully he'll arrive tomorrow and supposedly he's going to work on Saturday as well. I'm certainly not holding my breath.
