replacing window with patio door

We would like to put a patio door to the backyard into our dining room, as there are currently no doors leading from the house into the backyard. We would like to be able to let our dog out directly into a fenced area, and we would eventually like a deck or patio out there. There is currently a window where the door will be, with a heating vent and electrical outlet in the wall underneath it. (See link below for picture.)

We are wondering what door style would be best. We were thinking perhaps a sliding door, but it would take up a huge portion of that wall, which is only 9' across. Would it be too big, dominating the room? And of course it would require a bigger hole to be cut, and (I assume) more support framing to be done. Would a white frame allow it to blend into the walls better?

It was suggested to us by our home inspector that we put in a single swinging door instead, which does seem like it would be a lot easier as far as making the hole in the wall goes. Then the problem is in-swing or out-swing. In-swing would cramp the room, and the light fixture would no longer be directly above the dining room table. Out-swing would require the building of a full landing, not just steps down to the yard

Any opinions on style of door?

And any idea as to how much time it will take to get this done? We would not be doing it ourselves (disappointing to my father, who was really looking forward to knocking a hole in our wall), but how much time does it generally take to take out a window, enlarge a hole in a plaster wall, re-support the opening, move a heating vent and electrical outlet, and install a patio door...assuming nothing goes horribly, horribly wrong?

Thanks in advance!
