Lap quilt finished just in time!

I was worried if I'd get this done in time to give to my mother for X-mas, but I finished it early enough on Christmas Day. Talk about cutting things close...

It's a Double Four Patch block. I've fallen in love with this pattern ever since we did it for the block lotto in November.

I just quilted it in my own special 'Wandering All Over The Ditch' style. hehe

And I used the self binding method.

Sorry I didn't get a better picture so you could see the detail of the off white print. It has circles and dots on it that match the green and red of the other blocks.

It's very pretty--I'll bet your mother just loves it. What do you mean by self binding method? Is that where you turn the backing over to make the binding?

Judy, I really like your quilt. I will add that to the list of future projects! Ann, I think it looks like a rail fence with a HST sewn to opposite corners of each block. It seems to me that you could make it using HSTs or using this "snowball" method, but start with a 3 strip rail fence and just add corner triangles on 2 opposite corners, rather than all four corners. Nice to see these old items cherished. And what a lovely fabric with birds on the back! I'm so glad you have done this in such a way that it can be undone if desired by a future owner, and documented it on the label for history. The original maker may have believed it WAS finished. Not all quilts required actual quilting stitches with a batting inside. We often find log cabins, pineapples, silk crazies, and others sewn on a foundation that were not meant to be *quilted* as we think of quilting today. BlueBars

I'm also a mbr of the no-work or less-work club, too many of us by the long list of posts:(:( Unfortunately, my employer was ME! - had to close my quilt shop before the economy got any worse. So many of my customers or their husbands had lost their job or had hrs cut & they were working off their stash & not buying fabric. I'm not complaining, I could understand. I had already survived a fire & a 100-yr flood --- the troubling economy was the last straw, besides, who knew how long it would last (STILL!!?!! Hang in there - there are blessings to enjoy! More time for the fun things & the people in your life top the list. Let's all keep the faith & keep praying for an economical turn-around!

Thanks everybody for the kind words & encouragement. Part of me wants to say they're not my colors or my style, but I too like how it turned out, especially for a Sampler. So I'll say thanks again, & as I just explained in a descriptive blurb I was asked to submit on being accepted for the Show, it was a little like doodling w/ fabric instead of pencil & paper. The Show's not a juried one, but still a Show, in one location for November (Lefferts Historic House, Brooklyn, NY) & a second nearby location for December (Prospect Park Boat House, Brooklyn). I'll post an update when the Show's up. Thanks Again for Egging me on everybody ... I DO feel stronger for it.

Congratulations on finishing in the nick of time!! Nice job and I bet your mother was thrilled. It is an interesting pattern. reminds me of the Irish chain. A pretty print. Jayne

It's really VERY nice Cathy. A lovely combination of nice pattern & geometry (my personal favorites) w/ a subtle, & harmonious coloring.

Can I ask pls. what size are your finished blocks? I'm guessing 8", or a least I can see trying that (I can see it's going on my mental list of 'will have to make this quilt someday').

It was hard to tell if Mom liked it or not; she seemed more surprised that I made it. ;)

Geri, yes, that is what I meant. 'Self bound' just didn't sound right so I called it a method... ;)

Pirate Girl, you are correct, the blocks are 8" finished.

That is so pretty!! I'm looking to make something for my MIL and this might just be it!! I'm very new to quilting and I did look at the link you posted but I'm not good with figuring out fabric yet. Can you tell me the yardage you needed of each color to make this? Thanks!!

You know, I'm not sure about the yardage. I know, I just made it but I can't remember!
I brought a yard of each of these fabrics to add to my stash and when I decided to make this quilt I went out and brought more of each! LOL
By looking at what's left, I 'think' I used just over 1/2 yard each of the green, red and floral and about 3/4 yards of the off-white for the top.
If you do a regular binding, I'm not sure how much yardage you will need for that, but I used a 2 yard cut of the floral for the backing and self binding and had about 17 inches leftover from the end.

Forgot to mention that the quilt measures approximately 40"X50".
