One of the lap quilts I made

In the last few months I had a job which I quit ..I had been in this job for 25 years and couldnt handle the politics any more..I also have had to help my dad sell his house and move which was 40 years worth of things....To help take care of xmas I decided to make lap quilts for 4 people..I had lots of stash so it didnt cost me much at all.here is one of them..the pattern is called double dutch and I loved making it using the strip quilting method....Judy

Thanks, everyone! I really enjoyed seeing what fabrics and combinations of fabrics the other people used, I learn a lot that way. I learn what I like, what I don't like, how to think out of the box, etc. It makes me a better crafter when I get outside my zone. Anyway, I was tickled to see it there. I made Woody get up and come in to see it, and he was impressed as a guy could be with something that doesn't explode or create havoc! lol And the cats just love this thing, Beez has staked a claim but he will occasionally let Murphy get on it with him. :)

Donna, yes it's conjunctivis - and very contagious - that's why I've kept at home all week, but today I HAD to go to the grocery, DH is working today and we were out of everything. I hate to go around and expose anyone else to this - it's pretty nasty - but I had no choice. I made sure I used the hand sanitizer at the store a couple of times. The nurse at the Dr.'s office said she had it and her daughter also - the daughter was banned from work for 2 weeks because of it. I'm pretty sure I got it from where I volunteer - I found out one of the clients had it and I did shake hands with him the week before.

A little more info about the quilt: One of our members found a pattern for the row quilt in a magazine. I bought the background fabric for the whole quilt and we each took a row to do, using our own fabric stash. Some of us exchanged fabric to make it coordinate a little better. The pattern had pieced sashing but because all the rows were not the same length, I used a solid sash to join the rows. I had to add background on the ends of some of the row to make them all the same size. Our group makes quilts for charity. We will probably raffle this quilt for some cause. We made a row quilt a few years ago and gave it to the local opera house that is being restored. They raffled it during a quilt show that was held there. Thanks Kathleen! You know, I'm not sure about the yardage. I know, I just made it but I can't remember! I brought a yard of each of these fabrics to add to my stash and when I decided to make this quilt I went out and brought more of each! LOL By looking at what's left, I 'think' I used just over 1/2 yard each of the green, red and floral and about 3/4 yards of the off-white for the top. If you do a regular binding, I'm not sure how much yardage you will need for that, but I used a 2 yard cut of the floral for the backing and self binding and had about 17 inches leftover from the end. Wow, you have had a lot on your plate. I quit a job after 18 years for pretty much the same reasons. It is a tough decision, but I have another that I (usually) really enjoy. Everyone works together instead of against each other.

How nice to make Christmas presents out of your stash. I think presents made by hand are the absolute best.

That is a really pretty lap quilt. I don't think I have seen that pattern before. It looks complicated. You did a good job.

What pretty colors to make a very pretty quilt. That was quite an undertaking for Christmas gifts. I am sure they were all loved. Enjoy some relaxing time for yourself.

love the lap quilt, do you have a link for the pattern - i think it looks as though i could make it by hand sewing - i am unable to use my sewing machine at the moment because of a foot operation.

Thank you everybody for the encouragement and Ann, I dont have a written pattern since my girlfriend just told me step by step how to make it...she made one and I loved it...i did a search and couldnt find a pattern...sorry but if I do find one I will let you know...Judy

Judy, I really like your quilt. I will add that to the list of future projects!

Ann, I think it looks like a rail fence with a HST sewn to opposite corners of each block. It seems to me that you could make it using HSTs or using this "snowball" method, but start with a 3 strip rail fence and just add corner triangles on 2 opposite corners, rather than all four corners.

Lola, you are correct...I sewed 3 colors at 2 1/2 inch strips together cutting them into 6 1/2 inch strips..adding 2 1/2 in. squares on opposite corners and sewing 4 blocks together to make a 12 1/2 inch square..thats pretty much it...hope this helps since Im not real good at describing patterns..I will help you any way I can...Judy
