Need help with ceiling design of three season porch

Have an old New England home with a 24x9 three season porch which has solid banks of storm windows on three sides. I don't envision it ever being used for anything else.

We recently replaced the roof with EPDM rubber and tore down the damaged, what looked like, hardboard ceiling.

Am about to replace it with sheetrock on strapping. We've been advised to use some foil faced 1" rigid foam insulation behind it to keep the room from baking in the summertime.

I had planned on just replacing the ceiling, without any insulation beind it. Thought of using fiberglass for awhile but didn't want to get into ventilation issues.

Is foil faced foam above sheetrock proper? Would it keep the room any cooler in the summer?

I don't know if foil faced foam is the best alternative, it might be the easiest for a DIY guy. It is great advice to insulate the ceiling, we have a lake home without insulation and it is routinely 10 degrees hotter inside than out and can be very uncomfortable.

Well, after looking into it a bit I agree that it would be good to insulate the area. But which is preferable, foam panels or fiberglass?

If fiberglass is recommended, should it be placed between the roof joists or the ceiling joists? And how thick?

If foam panels are recommended, they come in a multitude of thicknesses and types. What's recommended?

I've searched for this online and didn't see much about insulating seasonal rooms.

As an appraiser, I see you having two issues, which option will be the best value and which option suits your needs? The basement will provide the best return on expense. The reason is it will be heated and can be counted as finished living space below grade. The three-season room will be designated as unfinished area such as a deck or porch and valued accordingly.. If all of the other units have a basement and your unit doesn't, it may be harder to sell. Flip that statement to if all of the other units have a three-season room and yours unit doesn't it may be harder to sell. Having said that, you need to install whatever best suits your needs and desires. Life is too short. Put in the item that you think will improve the quality of your life.

ptreckel - that's a great question. I'm not sure I know though :) I kind of want it to be both, if that's possible. I do want it to be a porch. But want to make sure it's cozy and comfortable as well, like a "room" in our home. I'm worried that slate flooring would feel cold. I originally thought of doing a grey washed oak floor with white walls, and a dark ceiling. I also liked the idea of a pretty blue ceiling like the ocean. I'm leaning towards neutrals (grays, whites, darker ceiling) and then doing fun things with couches, pillows, etc.

Cozy? I would paint this room a deep green to make it cozy and the texture of the walls will lend itself to rustic. Bring the beauty of nature, which is the focus point, into the room. I would replace the ceiling light fixtures with matching small ceiling fans, recover the furniture pads to coordinate with the color of the walls, switch the seating so that the settee faces the windows, and between the rocker and the settee, I'd put a small end table with a reading lamp. An indoor/outdoor carpet would anchor that area. Some hanging plants in front of the windows would be a nice touch.
