Deck, screened porch, or 3 or 4 season sunroom
Comments (16)We were mulling over the same question a few years ago. We started out thinking screened porch but then realized how much we needed a 4-season gathering space when we entertained. Friends who had gone the 3-season route told us they were essentially 'no season' rooms because they were too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter (you know Minnesota extremes). So we decided to ante up for a 4-season room and we are so glad we did! We went 16'x24', put in 2 sliding glass patio doors to the deck, plus 8 good-sized windows, and a double French door to the dining room. It is a room of light all year round! We followed our furnace guy's recommendation to put in a gas fireplace for heat and a ductless minisplit for air conditioning. They both work splendidly and we can just turn them off and shut the door to the rest of the house when we're not using the room. We love the room in all seasons. With the help and advice of some very skilled siblings, we did almost all the work ourselves and it cost around $40,000....See MoreWhat's the purpose of a sunroom?
Comments (53)We live in a 1920s house and we have two. One is upstairs, connected to the master and only has two walls of windows and we were told was a "sleeping porch" originally. Eight years ago we added a room onto the back of the house, a room with sliding doors instead of windows on three of the walls. It looks like a porch that has been enclosed, but it is all new build. The room upstairs is our extra TV room -- two comfortable leather chairs and a TV and the wall that isn't windows is a wall of books. The downstairs room we use for a breakfast room (we have no eat in kitchen). It has one brick wall (the outside of the house) and a brick floor. It's where the big plants winter and where we eat most of our meals. What I would love is a conservatory with a roof of glass as well and I could probably put one on the south side of the house if I win the lottery -- LOL! Comments (12)Hey There: Sunrooms are a great way to improve living quality in your house as well as increasing the value of it. Enjoy outdoor experience on a rainy or cold day and watch the stars at night – bring the outdoors inside and extend the time you can enjoy it. Besides the design of your new sunroom, you must consider how to bring shading to it - you don’t want to sit in a glass house and get cooked. The shades should easy adapt to your shading and privacy needs for example with a bottom up top down operation for pleated blinds, roman shades and venetian blinds. Must be able to cover triangles and odd shapes (most sunrooms have some non-squared glass) Must be able to be installed overhead for skylight or similar Must be minimalistic to keep the open sunroom feeling Must be available in many colors, prints and designs to choose from Sunrooms and window treatment go hand in hand for a perfect sunroom experience....See MoreNeed help with inspiration (and functionality) for sunroom
Comments (13)What a cute space! I agree, lots of potential. It must be pleasant to sit there in the early evening and get a pulse of the neighbourhood. Is there any room in the garage for the strollers and wagon? That's where I parked mine. Otherwise, could you confine them all to one wall and perhaps use a curtain (or a screen) to hide them? (Your lights gave me the curtain idea.) As @AnnKH mentioned, those daily necessities aren't forever and I wouldn't invest much in storage solutions for them. Here's an Apartment Therapy feature on stylish shoe storage for entries. You know your family's habits best: would closed storage work or is open easier/better? A bookcase might be all you need for the shoes. Bookcases are usually 12 inches deep. (What size are your largest shoes?) Find an inexpensive vintage one with style you like or buy an inexpensive new one at Ikea and transform it to your liking. Not sure if the chairs are too big for the space but they don't look that comfy to me....See Moretartanmeup
