What light fixture would YOU buy?

Here's the challenge: the fan/light stays, the weird 4-light Victorian thing goes. What would you buy to replace it? The one rule is a big one(from my dh): it cannot hang down much more than the old one (about 10 inches). The beam is already pretty low. Any ideas?

A brief repeat of the basics: The hood should overhang the cooking zone such that a 45-degree expanding cone from each pot, wok, or pan is intercepted by the hood. The flow rate (corrected for pressure losses) should be at least the aperture area (square feet) of the hood times 3 feet per second times some guess factor ( less than 1.0 ) that accounts for baffle effectiveness in increasing air velocity in the baffles close vicinity and for interior hood shape. Conservatism in performance would assume the factor is one, while conservatism in price and visual obtrusiveness would hope for 0.5, perhaps. Actual flow rate for typical installations may be only 2/3 that for which the blower is rated at zero static pressure, even with an active make-up air system. Duct size at full power should allow the air velocity to be 500 to 1500 feet per minute depending on, respectively, whether the ducting is in a warm environment or cold environment. Make-up air always equals what gets out through the hood. The goal is to supply this without drawing it from wall switch covers, window seal leakage, and backdrafting of furnaces, hot water heaters, and fireplaces. For high flows this requires a system that is at a minimum passive, and at a maximum uses PID control to keep the house pressure constant at a very small negative pressure independent of fan speed or use of other fans, appliances, and fireplaces. Although my hood is a Wolf, made by Independent, there have been several kudosi given to ModernAire on this forum, who will be happy to build a tailor-made configuration. An external blower and intermediate silencer will minimize kitchen noise. kas

I like to buy local when I can, and we did for our recent bath reno. I shopped alone to get an idea of what was out there at a local plumbing supply showroom and a local lighting store. Both very reputable and both where we bought original fixtures for our home. Then I went back to the plumbing house with my GC when it was time to pick out the plumbing fixtures. That didn't take long since I pretty much knew what I wanted. The sales guy had also helped us when we replaced a kitchen faucet and was actually the same guy who helped us when we built our house. For the lighting, it was a little harder, especially for one fixture, so my GC just told me to tell them he was the GC when I placed the order. It was easy. I compared prices to online prices and was pleasantly surprised. So I have supported local business and economy, and if anything goes wrong, I have much easier, if not better overall, recourse for getting a problem solved. And at a slightly better overall price.

Piaa, I am not familiar with Grohe's Starlight Chrome finish, but perhaps you could contact a customer service rep online and ask them? I just finished ordering all my fixtures for our basement BR online- from four different sources and I was a wee bit nervous until they all arrived- and they look fabulous (IMHO)- all polished chrome and you'd never know they came from all over the world (literally) and several different manufacturers. I think chrome is one of the very few finishes that you can be that lucky with! I totally know what you were thinking- worrying about the chrome being dated, but I don't think it ever will be- the style you choose...now that can be an issue... :>)

Sorry all - I let this thread slip through the cracks while I've been busy or else concentrating on other things! Profrip - The middle of the room pendant that i have now isn't meant to be anything too permanent. I do love that disc/flying saucer look - whether it's turn of century or 1950's diner. I guess it reminds me of the funky huge red one my mom had in our bright yellow and red and orange Matisse-inspired kitchen in the 1970's! But that particular pendant in my kitchen was cheap and too modern (not that I mind inexpensive)! So am I correct to assume then that the general idea is that if you have a pendant or two above the sink, it's generally good to have recessed in the center of the room or else the opposite? Generally speaking? I wish I knew how long I'll keep that pot hanger in the center of the room above the island. I know most people don't do that now but it IS very convenient. I thought I could get rid of it and get the wall pot hanger style to put next to my stove, thereby freeing up the center of the room more...but if I move the stove where I might move it, there will no longer be a wall just to the side of it as there is now...in which case the pot hanger would have to go on the wall behind the counter to the right of the stove which I imagine would mean I'd have to reach over a ways? Plus another convenience of it being in the center of the room is that it's close to the sink for filling w/ water. Those w/ pot-filling faucets wouldn't have to worry about that, obviously, but I don't have one! Where did they put pots in 1913 I wonder? On an open shelf? On a wall hanger? I know a few hundred years ago they went over the island. It sounds like talking to a real lighting person would be a good idea for your space. Have you done that since you last posted here? Thank you for the warm welcome to NYC! :) I somehow believe you that New Yorkers would be perfectly nice to strangers. Well, what do I know! I love your description of your earliest memories of it. Someday...I'm determined...someday! As for that last link you posted: I think those lights are kid of strange! The row of them in the background is just a bit odd to me - but there are some things I really like about that kitchen. EVERY SINGLE TIME I see wooden counters I drool. I love the look of American cherry but it's too soft, and all the hard woods I could find were either too light to me or else too red - or else too stripy - or both. The nice brown woods w/ just a hint of red/orange, e.g. Pacific Madrone, are too stripy.

I like the idea of track along the beam too. And one suggestion...take a look at the Pottery Barn photographers' track lights. They have a sort of old fashioned look that feels more in keeping with the rusticity of your kitchen than some more modern ones might.

I guess depending on how much light you want, I think an Onion light would look good there. They have flush and semi-flush ones.

fori - I am glad you like it, it has been there for 25+ years - came with the house! I just don't like the ruffles on that fixture very much - I don't think it goes with the paddle on the wall :) That, and it is rusty :(

Palimpset, I have thought about track lighting, I am worried that it will be too modern for the space and afraid that the halogens will be hot. Is that heat thing a myth?

A lantern chandelier would be nice. Let me see if I can save one to photobucket so I can post. Still a little new at this.

I have a neighbor with a beam like that, and she hung an old lantern over the beam, hanging from old rope and tied in a knot! It looks soooo cool, but it uses candles!

Ok, there are lots of lantern knock offs out there, with electricity ;). Any lighting site, search lantern chandelier or lantern pendant. Let me try to post this image from my iPhone. If it works I will add my thoughts one at a time.

Melissa - I looked up the PB lights and thought they were very cool, a little too modern but maybe not? I bookmarked.

Prim, I have never heard of Onion lights but looked them up and love the look - my only hesitation is the one-bulb thing, this house faces north and can get dark, so I am looking for every watt I can get.

Cheri - I loved your picture!!! Where can I find that light?

I pasted a link below for a rail light - would this work? It drops down 11 inches, but I think I can finagle an inch :)

I forgot to say that a real lantern would be SO cool, except for the lack of wattage! When I was a little girl I wanted to be Laura Ingalls Wilder, I guess moving here 25 years ago was a way to live the dream....a lantern would totally fit :)

Until you find something you really love, change the shades to something like on the paddle fan light. Sand and paint the fixture black.

For good task lighting...are you sure you can't throw up another ceiling fan? If you can use one, you can usually use another. You'd have to move it over slightly of course to hang from the ceiling like the other fan...tall people hate it when those are low for some reason.

(The dainty rusty fixture works for me because it's a little bit eclectic in a funny way. Not as jarring as a crystal chandelier, but just a little bit of fun.)

fori - there is already another fan further down toward the lr, we basically live in one big room, I love your nice words about my silly fixture, the old owners also had a huge fancy chandelier in here I took down when we moved in, looked like Miss Kitty's boudoir on Gunsmoke!

desert steph, I also really like Cheri's light AND I like the idea from eandhl and dianalo of replacing the flouncy glass on the current fixture with glass that matches the fan and painting the whole mess black, I could probably live with that for another 25 years!

Thanks for the ideas - and Cheri, if you read this, could you tell me where you found that picture of the light you posted?
