House Wrap with Foil Back Insulation sheets?

First, let me say thank you to those of you (MongoCt) who have taken the time to answer my questions over the last year. Your answers are printed and carefully filed away if I been able to put them to use yet.

We are building (just my hubby and me) a 25x20' kitchen/dinning addition, shed roof, trusses, cathedral ceiling with two skylights, loft on one end, and lots of windows. I'll try to figure out how to post some pictures. Presently we have the roof on and are finishing up the wall sheathing as of tomorrow. Not sure if we should use the foil faced insulation sheets on the exterior walls, Building Science seems to indicate we would not have to use house wrap with it, as it is a water barrior too. Or should we use 2 inch foam and use the house wrap? The foil tape is rather expensive, so I'd rather not use house wrap if its not needed. Currently we are planning to DIY spray foam on just the roof. Thanks

Concerning the use of radiant barrier vs foil faced insulation panels, you might want to contact Ed Sumpolec of energy conservation specialists @ 321.693.3562

The use of foil panels on the exterior is extra insulation, but has less effectiveness in combating heat gain because there is no air space involved.The use of radiant barrier on the inside wall cavaties w/ an air space is more effective at lessening heat gain,and helps in heat loss properties in the winter as well.The foil faced panels will aid in controlling heat loss in the winter as effectively as the radiant.It all depends on your application and climate zone.We installed radiant barrier on our build with more concern in holding in the heat which involved a different application not utilizing an air space.

The foam application in your roof cavaties is covering the best of both worlds for you concerning heat gain/loss and i dont understand you not considering foaming your wall cavaties as well.

We are more interested in holding the heat in, we are in Omaha and althought it gets hot our yard is shaded with huge trees. We were applying the foam outside the sheathing to try and keep the cold away from our studs which the permit required to be be 12' on center on our tall wall side. We are not experienced with the spray foam and are afraid it would be cost prohibitive for the walls. Also, foam panels on the outside of the sheathing will help break the wood framing contact with the cold.

I'm here in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS and am getting ready for my first HFGH (10x12)spring. Have an LP heater in and have just received my shipment of bubble wrap from Charley's. My plan was to put the bubble wrap up in a horizontal plane beginning at the left of the door frame and go all around the inside of the greenhouse to the right door frame. I have my shelving hanging off of the wall studs so I thought that this would be easier and neater. The other option is to put it up in the vertical plane. I have the hangers from Charley's, but for the life of me, I cannot make sense of the corner hangers for this bubble wrap. ODB or plywood have been the standard exterior wall sheathing materials for more years than you or I have been on this earth! They are the simplest and best way to resist seismic and wind shear forces in framed walls (when constructed with proper connections). In Oklahoma, tornados can create a lot of uplift forces and, thus, you will want a foundation, wall and roof design and connection that are resistant to thise forces. That means continuous rigid sheathing such as OSB or plywood. important. If it was my house I would use: 1) 2X6 studs with dense pack cellouse insulation; 2) house wrap; 3) minimum of 1" XPS rigid insulation with taped joints (or 2-1" insulation panels with overlapping joints; 4) brick and masonry ties; 5) drainage space; 6) brick or stone masonry finish materials. Proper sealing at all plate lines, corners and openings is essential. Your footing will need to have a brick ledge formed in it to receive and carry the brick/stone masonry. Thanks, i am in northern michigan, zone 4. We are building a 2300 square foot 1 1/2 story home. 2x6 wall construction, sheeted w/ osb, vapor barrier and the 3/4 inch foam on outside. It will be covered with vinyl siding and stone when it is finished. I am very concerned about my insulation because the ceilings are high and fuel prices are rising. We will be using an outdoor wood stove for the most part w/ propane furnace back up. I would love to do the spray foam insulation but we are building ourselves and paying for this build as we go and i am not sure that we will be able to swing that. My original post in the other forum was asking if i could: use the foam on the exterior, foam and caulk all cracks and sill plates, beam etc(not a builder...just the researcher in the family) in the framing, use blown in insulation in the walls and attic spaces///// i have read much on here regarding the r value necessary. and in the living room and bedroom that are cathedral ceiling, i was thinking about using the ....duravent, and stacked foam sheets that were sealed with spray foam... from a can to get a higher r value in the 2/10 area of the cathedral. am i on the right track or would i be better off w/ batts. do you have any idea where i can purchase that tape for the exterior joints in bulk or large quanities, it was like 11.00 for 50 feet, i have LOTS of 50 feet rolls to buy.. depressing.

If there's going to be that big of a temperature difference between the wall you're covering and the indoor ambient temperature, be sure not to seal the material to the wall tightly. The walls will condense moisture from the air and cause mold to start growing. As zl700 mentioned, you could put wood strips on the wall to act as spacers, but don't go snug against the floor and ceiling. This will allow the air to circulate behind (hopefully enough). It may feel like a draft, true, but it would be far better than removing the foam or bubble wrap to find a big growth of mold. What are your plans for a permanent fix? You mention that these are cement block walls. Would you put foam on the exterior next summer? It must cost a fortune to keep your home warm. :-(

Personally i would bite the bullet and opt for the foil tape and foil faced insulated panels.I believe that is correct that the panels act as your moisture barrier, so no need for housewrap.Taping the seams and any protrusions similar to a housewrap install is key to lessen air infiltration.You might try some builders suppliers for a better price on foil tape compared to going to a hardware or big box store as you are buying a fairly large quantity and the suppliers in bulk you will generally get a better price.I like the idea of the foils reflectivity that will help in holding in the heat.
