Old copper gutters,can they be saved? Or?

Redoing our roof this coming week. Using Certainteed 50 year Landmark/Woodscape shingles, and will really change look of 1955 custom ranch. Roof had been medium gray, going to the "resawn shake" color, goldie brown cedar color. Have lovely old copper gutters aged to the greenish patina, original to the house. Well, right, still have them, just not up on house. DH and roofer friend took them down yesterday. DH doesn't want to reuse them now. Yipes, now what? Wasn't planning on a new gutter system, ok, probably should have foreseen this. Researched copper gutter installation techniques,seems the best way to do it is an iron verses torch. Takes an experienced person to put new ones up, no mention of old ones. Has anyone out there done this- remounted older ones? Roof is 3400sqft, will need 290 feet of gutter system, that's alot of gutter! Checked out new copper, may cost a small or medium size fortune, saw older estimates here at $20,000. Loved the look of our old ones,plus have exterior tile on front entrance steps in blueish-green color to work with them. Trying to do research fast this morning, have looked at products from gutter supply. One called copper penny is a painted copper aluminum product.Keeps that new copper look,priced at for k styles, 5x.027 coiled roll, $2.67. By the way, what does that mean- coiled roll? Is that for when they produce the so called "seamless" gutters? Then there's the regular aluminum in various colors,$1.08 ft. None of which look like our color. Some post elsewhere said Alcoa's musket brown was the choice for the copper look, unless my monitor is really off, looks like plain old brown to me. Neither a bright penny color or a patina look. Does anyone know about zinc gutters? May be in copper price range, priced at $89.62 for 10 feet of 5 half round gutter. Live in southern New England, so we get the snow and rains. Any votes on which hanging system is better? Any tips on which shape, half round or k style works well for draining/cleaning? House color is presently Glacier Sand by BM, basically a mud color ;), grayish brown. TIA for any tips, Nickey

The original copper probably has another 40 years of life left in it. It develops pinholes in about 100 years, but by then it would not even survive the removal process. If you were able to take down the sections intact, that's evidence enough that the material is still sufficiently thick to support its own weight. Why not reuse the high-grade material? It's a huge savings to you to do so. It would be wise to employ a skilled craftsman.

There are soldering irons that run off acetylene available.
The flame heats the base of the inch diameter copper 'iron.'

They are far faster than using irons heated in a small oven.
Each iron can only solder a few inches of joint before it must be returned for re-heating.

If the gutters are held up with spikes, I would use new copper spikes and thread the ends 1/4-20.

Brass thread inserts in the fascia then allow the spikes to be screwed in (small vice grips grab the head for the last few turns).

Whaas: Yes, pines and spruces can exude sap, but that sap is not enough to cover large wounds, and even if it were, it would not prevent rot. Pine sap can for a time can create a barrier that can delay fungal infections, but it is not itself a fungicide. In fact, I have had a lot of experience with large wounds to both pines and Norway spruce trees--the fungal rots enter these trees faster than in most, and the rot spreads very, very fast. Before I hit on the liquid copper fungicide, I experimented with Captan, and with Bordeaux mixture. With both I saw fungal fruiting bodies within two years--maybe just 1.5 years. But, if one prunes off smaller side branches from pines and spruces, there is virtually no risk of fungal rot entering those kinds of cuts. With red pines especially, the cut surface is impregnated with pitch, and is very, very rot resistant. But this is not the kind of situation I am recommending this fungicide treatment for. The cuts I made on about a dozen white pines, for example, were to remove 1/2 of a forked tree, and the cuts were generally about 8" by 12". My forester who saw what I had done said that I was wasting my time trying to save such trees. Hah! He should see them now. White pines with a tight "V" shaped fork will eventually split in storms about 90% of the time, hence my acting to save them. Every one of the trees I cut this way about 27 years ago is now a beautiful, straight white pine tree, 100 feet tall, and as healthy as any tree can be. I have also had a few white pine and spruce trees clawed by bears, leaving large areas with the bark removed. I have treated these trees also, and no rot has appeared in these either. With the spruce, sap did cover a part of the damaged areas. With the white pine, sap actually covered very little. But, even had the sap covered these areas, there would have been a delay of just three, or maybe up to 5 years--not nearly enough time for the callus to cover the wounds. --Spruce

Replace copper lines for Puron?

You need new lines for a Puron system. I just had my new system installed yesterday. I chose the best quality installer around (prices seem to be pretty similar among the better installers)-- installation makes a BIG difference. Any quality installer will replace the lines. It is true that the remnants of whatever runs in R22 lines won't mix with Puron and I believe that is the reason a proper install will involve all new lines. Why go looking for trouble with your new system? I feel it is worth the expense to do it right and then hopefully be trouble free. Good luck.

You can leave the grounded receptacles as is. Just install a GFCI type receptacle as the first one on each circuit and feed the rest from the load connection on the GFCI. Use the labels that come with the GFCI to indicate the GFCI protection and no equipment ground at each receptacle. The adapters ought to be outlawed and posession of them should at least be a flogging offense, IMHO Ungrounded lighting circuits are seldom as big an issue as receptacle circuits. Many appliances, tools, and other things have cords with a ground type plug indicating they should be grounded. The GFCI will protect you from shock with these things but in the case of electronic equipment, computers especially, a grounded circuit is almost a requirement to prevent equipment damage from a number of sources. Also, surge suppressors need the added connection to function properly. It wouldn't hurt to think about gradually upgrading all the receptacle circuits as you can, but no reason to hurry unless you get something requiring a ground.

please see link on proper planting ... which includes planting in april .. not june ... the plant had little time.. to settle in before summer heat and drought ... watering should be deep and infrequent.. with near drying in between such ... insert finger to 3 inches.. and find out when it needs water ... no spraying the leaves .. i never water my 15 year old Ls .. and in severe heat and drought.. they droop every afternoon .. and recover every night ... presume your stock comes disease free .. i have grown Ls for 4 decades.. and never did anything to them other than water them the first year ... do not spray it .. do not cut stuff off it ... on some level.. i fear you may have tried to love it to death ... these are what i call .. run it over with the truck plants .... they simply shouldnt be problematic ... but for a large plant.. improperly planted ... good luck .. ken https://sites.google.com/site/tnarboretum/Home/planting-a-tree-or-shrub
