I went to Joann's with a gift certificate. I was standing in the cutting line and a woman came up with a slab of 4-inch thick green cushion foam, it was 80 inches long and 24 inches wide. I just about fell out when the price with a 40 percent off coupon came to over 160 dollars!!!! I asked her what she was doing with it, she said she is renting and the couch is worn out and needed a new pad on it. Well after hearing the price on it, and plus the fact that she also had to buy fabric to cover it, she changed her mind.

For the price of the foam and material alone, she could go to a furniture store and get a new couch on sale!!

Such a wasteful society we have that makes this the truth. Even better for her if she were to just make do with what she has.

There is no earthly reason a piece of foam that size should retail at $160, let alone $213. My mother used to use cuts of foam a lot for re-doing furniture and making dog beds (LOL) and found the best place to buy that sort of stuff was the Army/Navy store, a market for surplus government issue items.

I am going slightly bonkers and doing an about face, now considering stainless range, off-white knobs, brass trim around the knobs. Hood still to match cabinets. Is this coo-coo? I can't see how it would look because for some reason, the white knobs on the Blue Star site are not showing up as white. I hate stainless and always loved the idea of redoing a kitchen with the ability to have paneled appliances and a colored range. But now in the midst of this, it all feels like over kill in my small-ish kitchen. And I'm noticing that while my hood and range ideabooks have all white hoods and ranges, my original ideabook of favorite overall kitchen looks all have stainless. These were my original inspiration before I got all crafty with the details: And, here is my kitchen currently - the L part is what is being redone with new cabinetry / range.

That is an interesting website, live_wire_oak. We're a bit lower end finishes than the mid range master, but sizewise pretty comparable. I downloaded the data for the local region (Mountain, Boise: right state, 300+miles off) and adjacent (Pacific, Spokane, WA: wrong state, in the neighborhood geographically). Looking at prices, the Pacific region is probably more accurate. It was very eye opening and I wish I'd come across this at the outset. We were hoping to avoid financing, so my husband and I will need to have a serious discussion about phasing it, maybe starting with porches and saving up for the master, and possibly explore costs for building within the garage, bringing it down to a two car 25x26, which is not our favorite option although there's room to add a 16x36 3rd bay eventually.

Delta isn't "junk" although the prices on their higher end styles and finishes probably compares to Kohler prices. I am not *shocked* at the prices as I spent more than that on my shower fixtures. When I first started my remodeling I was *shocked* at the prices of things but then just accepted that was the price for the items I wanted. I have a Kohler kitchen faucet and when I looked at less expensive options they were all a bit "off" and I didn't like those as much. There were just subtle differences in aesthetics although I am sure the Delta or Moen similar styles would have performed fine as I had a Delta prior to my remodel which caused no issues functionally. Whether you need to save money is really the only relevant issue - once you know the price you are being quoted is the *accurate* one. By accurate I mean that is the price more or less that it is being sold at by other places. If you can afford to get it and that is the price, why not get it? If you can't afford it or spending money on these items will cause you to need to cut back in some other area, then you decide what is a priority. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I'm glad to see a lot of great feedback for you. Reading your original comment, this is what stands out to me. In your words, your parents are wanting to "make aesthetic updates", but when you're talking about a shower, replacing tile is not an "aesthetic update". That requires demolition down to the studs then completely rebuilding a water tight system from the ground up and then installing tile over top. I've done this this work myself before (not a pro) and it is a huge amount of work. Demolition is hard labor and the materials have to be hauled out, which is far more complicated if you have to exit multi-unit building. Then it's a technical skill to build up a proper shower system before the tile work even starts. Once that shower system is ready for tile, it takes experience, skill, and craftsmanship to install tile properly and beautifully. Quality labor is in high demand in many areas (certainly in mine) so unfortunately that means a lot of expense. If you want to do simple aesthetic updates that would keep the cost down, consider just paint, lighting, mirror, and maybe a vanity or countertops.

Rita, the same thing happened while I was at joanns the other day waiting to get my material cut. I couldn't believe it! I was glad to see her leave the foam and not try to make do when she needed a piece that was 28-inches wide. The clerk doing the cutting tried to convince her to use smaller pieces to make up the difference, but the woman said no and left. It was too bad she'd been in line already for about twenty minutes waiting for her turn, eh? Service at joanns has really taken a turn for the worse with the long lines at the cutting table and the registers, but they are the best place to go for fabric in my area. I've got a smaller fabric store less than a mile away from me, but their prices are sky-high and they never have what I want/need.

Joann's needs to rethink their lack of customer support. The one in my area is very small, only 3 people on duty for the whole store the day I was there. That same day there was also a man who needed someone to help him with buying a new sewing machine. There were a lot of people in line for the fabric cutting, so there were 2 clerks there, (one was dealing with the foam issue) and of course the only other one was at the check-out. Well the man just asked the clerk if he could get help and of course the clerk said that he needed to take a number and he would be waited on eventually. He didn't seem to get it, just kept standing there, not taking a number. When I finally got my stuff cut and walked away, a woman plopped about seven bolts of fabric up on the cutting table, still he was just standing there. I felt like telling him he could be standing there until doomsday, but decided I'd let him learn the hard way about the woman's world of fabric stores. Don't know if he wound up ever getting assistance, but if he walked out, they probably lost a big sale on a new sewing machine. But then, when I go to a Lowes I get the same treatment, let a woman try to catch the eye of a clerk there and they turn around and run the opposite way. I guess I need to follow a man around in there for awhile and see how they do it.

I agree Joann's service is really bad and I have a super store near me. Never had a problem at Lowe's though.
