What did you order, double pane or single pane or unspecified? If you ordered double-pane, then that's what you should get. Contact the seller, but if it's their error in sending the wrong merchandise, your cost should be minimal (should have been refused upon delivery, but how often are we there when it comes?!) If it wasn't specified, and you really want double pane (they make beveled glass in double-pane???) then the error is yours and you should contact the company to see what the cost and waiting time will be for replacement. The difference in insulative value between single and double-pane will depend on the size of the glass area and the type of seal, as well as whether or not the glass is treated for low-E. Also affecting the value are indeterminants such as whether the door is facing the predominant winds, whether it is in an alcove, whether it opens onto an enclosed foyer or an open living space.

If your door has glass in it now, you can put in replacement glass yourself. The insert is held in with molding attached with screws. Here's a how to I found. We considered doing something similar, but our door is already half glass. I found insulated replacement leaded glass inserts at the big box store but it was fairly pricey (about the same cost as a new door) so we decided to make a wood grille instead. I found a blog where someone had a full glass insert put into their whole wood door for under $100. I'm thinking the $100 was just labor and they didn't divulge the cost of the glass. When I called a glass shop, just replacing it with the same clear insulated glass we have now was over $150 for the cost of the glass without installation. I don't have a habitat store or a salvage store near me and didn't check any surplus stores.

Our front door is just average sized. I went into my blog and inserted a picture of it in the same entry as a picture of the house. Click on the blog link below, then on the right side, click on 2009, then on the entry dated 12/08/09, then you will see a sculpture entitled ''looking south'' and the house is in the background. I inserted the door photo after that. I have a neighbor who has a house similar to ours but much larger and his door is in three sections and elaborately beveled and it looks lovely.
