Popcorn ceiling removal in California question (asbestos)

We're looking at having our popcorn ceiling removed and can either send away a sample for an asbestos test and then if it comes back negative have the contractor we have in mind do the removal, or we can keep trying to get a company on the phone that says they do all their popcorn removals as if they contained asbestos (with masks and appropriate gear - they are licensed for such), such that the homeowner doesn't ever have to have the test done.

My question is really this ... if you do test and do find out the ceiling is asbestos - in California specifically - how much hassle/disclosure can that create at resale? (If it did turn out to contain asbestos we would have an asbestos-certified company remove it and of course do whatever proper disclosures are required.)

The interesting thing about that company I said we're trying to reach is that they sound like they obviate the need for testing and thus we as homeowners never has to find out. We don't think - nor do contractors think - that it's likely that our ceiling is an asbestos-containing type, but the onus is on the homeowner should a ceiling contain it.
