What's Wrong w/ Dishwasher in Corner?
Comments (6)I kind of agonized over this. The recommendation is to leave 21" between DW and corner so someone can stand in between DW and corner cabinet to unload dishwasher. I didn't follow the recommendation and put DW in the corner with a 3" filler between a blind corner cab and dishwasher. Don't skimp on the filler! You need it to make sure everything opens correctly. My parents' dishwasher has 2" filler or less and everything scrapes, it's horrible. My personal experience with this setup: I don't mind it. Two people still unload the dishwasher, one from the side and one from the front. Two cabinets behind the dishwasher (in the corner) are completely inaccessible when DW is open. I didn't store dishes in them for that reason. Remember the DW door may protrude as much as 30" when open, so it can block up to 54" of cabinet run in total. This setup does encourage me to close the DW door more often so I can get to the corner (my coffeemaker is in that corner so I need FREQUENT access -- maybe a little too frequent!). Because I do find myself needing to close the DW to get to the corner, it is a little inconvenient when open, so that is a tradeoff. If I could have had a longer run with the recommended clearance I would have, but it was totally worth it to me to get DW beside sink and out of the prep area. Plus the kitchen looks cleaner when the DW is closed all the time....See MoreDoes anyone have a dishwasher at the corner end of a cabinet run?
Comments (10)Thanks all! It's interesting to hear how many folks have end-runs and have no problems with it (despite what all the KDs say!). Tracie and Lascatx - I do love my DDs, but alas, in the new house the issue is noise. Fisher Paykel doesn't seem to have kept up with the rest of the industry in reducing the operational sound levels. The DD aren't LOUD, but they are noticable - you have to talk over them if you're in the room. The new house is small and open open - DR and kitchen are one, and they're both open to the LR. We could justrun the DW in the middle of the night the way we do now, but it would be nice to be able to run a quiet load during a meal so that there are actually enough dishes for dessert when we have company! That said, I am still struggling with the decision. DH says "go for quiet" and I say....I love not having to bend! but quiet would be nice. Decisions, decisions. Comments (22)I wonder if that great ocean view could be maximized so it's enjoyed more than just when you are doing the dishes. (maybe rearrange the layout to add a breakfast nook?). FWIW I used to hate that my sink window looked at the neighbor's house, not far away. I'd previously built a fence with an arbor and trellis (to match the rest of the fence) but still didn't love it. But when we rebuilt the fence, I swapped out the lattice section for something that looks more craftsman to go w/ my house (my neighbor even allowed us to make it solid on his side, which helps block the view.). With all my existing plantings and vines, I'm amazed at how much better it is. Here's a pic that's somewhat similar to what I had: My new fence/arbor is closer to this (but solid). Plus plantings and vines. Since the breezeway is all on your property, you can do anything you want!...See MoreAwkward corner cabinet
Comments (21)If you are going to all that work - I'd say the biggest improvement you could make would be to go full height with your uppers (leave the fridge section as is) so I would remove all the other uppers and do fridge to corner double height open shelves in the corner. Then the rest of the cabinets could all go full height. This would allow you to do square panels on the top which would greatly improve the visual of the kitchen. You could leave the lowers and fridge surround in wood and then all new uppers could be white. Similar to this kitchen: For a good quality paint job you are paying $$ but still have arched not full height uppers - and for leaving the lowers and fridge surround and getting new already done white uppers you are paying $ maybe $$ depending on cabinet line. The only tricky part is redoing crown at the ceiling but any good handyman/carpenter can do that in a day. Don't rush your decisions and settle on floor before anything else....See Morealoha2009
