How wide is your range vent hood over a 48' cooktop?

I want our framer to build a "fake" cast stone decorative vent hood over my 48" range. I am doing a French Country look and love those French style cast stone hoods. They are the kind that get smaller as they get closer to the ceiling. I want to use decorative appliques on the front of the bottom part of the hood to dress it up .

At the widest part across the bottom of the hood, how wide should I make it? I want to use fancy corbels under each side of the hood. Each corbel will be about 6" to 8" wide. So if I add 48" to 16" for the 2 corbels, I get 64". Then if I add 3" between each corbel and the range top for safety, I end up with a 70" wide hood. Does this sound about right?

Also, how far out from the wall does these hoods usually go?

The real ones are expensive and weigh a ton to hang.

My outside hood measures 68". The vent insert I purchased is 54" for my 48" rangetop. I have 9" pull out cabinets on both sides of the rangetop. My corbels are 4" wide by 8" deep by 13" high (enkeoll corbel # CBL-AN2A). My hood projects 29". Mine will be plaster with a wood front and I plan on adding some decorative relief or some other decoraive element. HTH.

Many kitchens today have a "mantle style" hood that comes down onto the counter, similar to gibbys you need a least 6" clearance both sides and a high CFM vent if you are using a commercial style cooktop For a 36" range or cooktop 48 is possibly ok you may want to go wider Check your appliance specs, and code allowances I think they look beautiful how practical is another story

I have a 54" Tradewind liner in a custom wood hood with a 1400 cfm remote blower on the roof. There is no reason to have 2 blowers etc. I have " commercial" grade appliances since I have a 36" Caldera gas cooktop with a built in Miele deep fat fryer next to it. We use it all for some very heavy duty stir frying and frying and never an odor or drop of grease do we see. We have had the set up for 4 1/2 yrs so I know whereof I speak :) Pics here and you can click on it and look at all the albums and all the food pics and see it at work. Question now tinker_2006 - if you were to do a decorative tile square area under the hood like lcskaisgir did, what size would you do? For us our cooktop is 36" but the hood is 54"... it's induction so it's not really seen from afar so I would think we could do bigger than cooktop but smaller than hood? Decisions decisions!

Welcome to posting. Things I have learned while reading GW: Duct size (8" is better than 6") and length will affect the performance of a hood--90° turns and long runs will decrease efficiency, so if that's the case, it's better to start with a more powerful hood. A larger capture area is better--6" wider than the range/cooktop. Make-up air is needed for a blower that draws more than 400cfms--check your local building code. Sones matter, too. Gopack: the standard measure for a hood over the range is 3 inches longer on each side than range or cooktop. Kitchenchaos is correct. 48 inches +6 inches = 54 inches. Now, some think that is not necessary and may be overkill but I have actually read in several places that using this measurement will take care of the grease and fumes plus on an aesthetic level it balances the range/cooktop more evenly on the wall. This is what we're doing. FWIW
