I was on FindAGrave several times yesterday and didn't have a problem. But it will not load at all this morning. The first thing that went thru my mind when I heard Ancestry.com had bought FindAGrave was great... now we will have problem with this web site. Only because there for quite some time there were a lot off and on with Ancestry.com's web site.

Ancestry.com has been having some problems and posted about them on Facebook. Day before yesterday they claimed they were doing "updates"...Today there is a banner across the top of the page that says the following.

"Note: You may be experiencing some intermittent service with the Ancestry.com website. We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause and appreciate your patience as we work to resolve the problem as quickly as possible."

I haven't been able to get on Gedmatch for quite a while.

UPDATE (4:35pm PST): The Ancestry websites are coming back online, but we are still working on Find A Grave. It's progress, albeit slower than we know you'd like. But it's still progress.

AN UPDATE FROM OUR CTO, SCOTT SORENSEN
Around 1:30 p.m. MT on Monday, June 16, 2014, attackers targeted Ancestry with a Distributed Denial of Service attack (DDoS). During the attack, Ancestry websites along with the Find A Grave website were clogged with massive amounts of bogus traffic that took the sites down.

We want to apologize for the inconvenience this has caused and also thank you for your amazing support, as this may have interrupted some of your family history research. We understand how frustrating this can be for our customers, and please know that it was just as frustrating for us too. We appreciate your patience and support as we dealt with this unfortunate incident against Ancestry.

We have since neutralized the DDoS attack and our services have been up since 11:00 a.m. MT today. You should now be able to access all Ancestry and Find A Grave websites, though you may experience issues intermittently as we continue to work through bringing the sites back up to full capacity.

Your data was not compromised by this attack. This attack overloaded our servers with massive amounts of traffic but did not impact or access the data within those servers. No data was impacted in any way.

I would like to thank the Ancestry Web Operations team for working really hard throughout the night to restore the Ancestry and Find A Grave services and build the defenses necessary to mitigate future attacks of this sort. Our Web Operations team is closely monitoring the situation in case the attacks resume and weâÂÂre doing everything in our power to protect our websites from situations like this in the future.

gedmatch has been having issues the last couple of weeks. They were trying to relocate their servers but ran into issues. They had been up - I was using them the last couple of days. You know a couple of guys run that site free of charge on their own time. I think they are getting overwhelmed with the number of people into genealogy now.

I was on Ancestry both yesterday, and just this afternoon
Exchanging notes with a descendant of my great grandfather's brother In England.

Just got into both, no problems, no messages. What's the rush, pictures can wait. Glad they were clever enough to resolve any issues so quickly.

They're both still up yet tonight but boy! Am I ever getting some weird returns at ancestry when I do a search! And they must be making some of them up out of thin air! I've noticed lately they must be doing the Family Data things over again. A couple of findagrave photos I put up are now indexed as Iowa Cemetery lists. Impossible. The monuments came from a private family cemetery. The last date there was 1899. I posted them a month or so ago. There's a lot of stuff that doesn't quite match what I already know for some specific people. Makes me think they're trolling family trees and making a composite document. I've had to be more and more careful lately to not believe everything I find there.

I will never understand hackers. I could see deliberately shutting down a child porn site, maybe, but family histories??

No real rush on the pictures, Old Fixer, but editing them, uploading them to FindAGrave, checking to see if they duplicate existing pics, creating memorials, linking family members, etc., requires a large chunk of time. Being a seasonal endeavor (I can do this only in warm months), it competes with the demanding garden, paid work, etc. I had planned to get started on the pics right away, and was psyched to do so. A minor inconvenience in the scheme of things.

I signed up yesterday for findagrave. It said it was emailing me a confirmation code, but I still haven't gotten it.

I emailed them, but no response as of a few minutes ago. Does anyone know why they haven't emailed the code nor responded to my emails?

Might not have gotten done with their outages for a few days. I've belonged for a long time and I don't remember having to get a code....Anyone else?? Maybe now that they're owned by ancestry it's different?

I just heard that JewishGen was hacked too. Probably others as well. Crazy.

Eddie, did you read the posts in this thread? It was apparently a mass hacking job, targeting genealogy websites. I'm not familiar with Genealogy.com, but perhaps someone else here has some specific info.

Genealogy.com has this posted to their website:

"We're sorry, but the website is temporarily unavailable. We are undergoing maintenance to resolve some errors caused by the recent DDoS attack and mitigate future attacks of this sort. We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused, as this may interrupt the work youâÂÂve been doing on the site over the next several days.

Many years ago when I first signed up for a membership at Genealogy.com, it was separate and apart from Ancestry.com. Genealogy.com also owned the software Family Tree Maker. (And every year when your membership was renewed, you'd get the newest version of the software.) Several years ago, Ancestry.com bought Genealogy.com and the software.

In the grand scheme of things, a few days without ancestry access is not an unendowing hardship. It's a great opportunity to check other sources such as county web sites, county historical societies, a google search, and read some blogs. You never know where or when you will run across an idea or a name or a source you didn't know about or maybe be reminded about a source you thought you had exhausted. It's easy to get stuck in a rut and go to ancestry automatically, I do it, too. But the branches I have dangling are not at ancestry - yet. So follow up on the siblings and children. Trace the parent's siblings. The grandparent's siblings. In those days it wasn't uncommon to have multi generations in one house. I found the reason for a move from Wisconsin to Iowa by reading the Iowa census page by page. Ggggrandmother on page 1, her brother on page 2 with his daughter and family. Makes me think that's why she and her two grandchildren moved to Iowa. The family members from both sides had always lived near each other. The families were a true spider web.

No web site is immune from a Dos attack. It's not anything they planned to do to annoy you. It's no different than Black Friday. Do you get mad at the world if you don't get the item you went after? Do you rant on facebook or blog posts? Well, yes, some people do but what's the point. The store didn't run out of the item just to get back at you for some unknown reason. Getting the site back up is no different than your boss standing beside you asking, "Are you done yet? Time is money., Are you done yet? Time is money., Are you done yet? Time is money. " Do you get done quicker under that kind of pressure? Do you want it fixed for a few minutes?

Lov_mkitchen, I'm not sure whom your post addresses, but I'm the OP and I don't even have an Ancestry membership. (Although I'm sure I would if I could afford it.) I got my many pics uploaded to FindAGrave, and memorials created, and now I'm happy. :-)
