What has happened to this tree?
Comments (10)SOmeone on the tree group said it was Quercus polymorpha (Net-leaf white oak), and the images I found look right. I didn't think that was very common here, kind of funny they were giving them away and they weren't on the list if it's not even common in local nurseries (CPS gives away free saplings of native trees every Earth Day - we got this one about 5 yrs ago). The site I found says it's only found in Val Verde County. They also suggested a mite may be doing this....See MoreWhat has happened to coffee makers?
Comments (29)I use a cheap Mr Coffee espresso machine that I received as a wedding gift twenty years ago this month. It has never done a great job steaming the milk, and unless the coffee is fine enough, the coffee ends up too weak. I tried switching to a Krups pump-type espresso machine, which steamed the milk a little better, but the coffee wasn't any better and it had a plastic-y flavor. Plus the machine was noisy, and hard to clean. When it finally blew a gasket, literally, I went back to using the old Mr Coffee machine, and have found that if I use Cafe Pilon pre-ground espresso the results are much better than if I buy whole beans and use my burr grinder. I have one two-espresso-shot latte every morning, occasionally I'll have another after lunch. The only thing I know about percolators is that at the home-based coffee shop near my father-in-law's place in Maine, there's a sign that says "No percolators" and if you ask the shop owner about the sign he will explain (at length) about how a percolator does everything wrong if what you want is good coffee....See MoreWhat happened to Site of the Day?
Comments (16)Ditto, all the comments above. I very often have checked out those sites....usually in the late evenings...same for the photo's. They are my "after dinner treat". Many thanks for a project the has been so very well done, Casey. And you SHOULD do it only while it is fun and not stressful. Comments (11)I would love to see the Completed Kitchens blog updated! I don't think Houzz has made it obsolete. There's just no one "in charge" of updating it. It was never connected enough to Gardenweb for Houzz to remove it. If you mean they have "obsoleted" it by performing the same job better, then I would also disagree. Houzz posts beautiful pictures of designer kitchens, but the finished kitchen blog provides all the nitty gritty details that were are really after. It's mainly the clever storage solutions that I love. A Houzz decorator might include 2 or 3 details shots of their drawers in a kitchen. A Kitchen Blog poster shares all the clever ideas they shoved into the space. Plus the sources for everything and feedback on how well it has worked for them. She mentioned she didn't have much free time anymore and that it was discouraging to her that people weren't granting permission to post their finished kitchens -- it seemed everyone wanted to look at kitchens, but they didn't want to add theirs. That is so strange to me. People were willing to post their kitchen pictures to a heavily trafficked forum, but they didn't want them shared on a blog that was trafficked by just a fraction of the users of the initial forum???...See MoreHal Warrick
