How to remove mortar from salvaged vintage marble window sills
Comments (7)If you start chiseling, you're going to find out right away if they are sturdy enough to be shelves. Shocks from chiseling are going to be a good test. Personally I could not see a marble shelf narrower than 8" having sufficient strength to support itself for very long, let alone any weight. Marble lacks flexive/tensile strength unless reinforced by "rodding".. I think a diamond grinder wheel would be the best removal method. Acid will eat marble faster than mortar. Comments (72)nancy_east -- thanks for your nice words! How exciting about your kitchen -- this will be fun to watch develop! The widest walkway we have is 36 1/2" (countertop to countertop), with it going down to 34 1/2" where our apron front sink "jumps" out. From our cooktop to the widest point of the bowed island countertop is 35 3/4". The only times (or rather, areas) our aisles feel tight are when the dishwasher door is open and there's only 12" of clearance (between the open door and the island cabinetry). But so far, no barked shins! We're careful and aware. The other area is our refrigerator (which is 30" wide, all refrigerator so it's a wide door): when it's open the only one who can sidle by (and then it's just barely) is our two year-old. But neither of those conditions are permanent (meaning, the dishwasher is mostly closed and the refrigerator door is mostly closed as well). While 36" for an aisle isn't "ideal," for us it's working out fine. Our only alternative would've been to give up the island and that wasn't an option! We need the storage space. Your aisles will work out fine; if it there's an impediment in the 36" aisle (like a dishwasher), then you all will learn the same careful two-step we and many others have as well! Good luck with your kitchen-in-progress! (and whole house, too!)...See Morevictorian kitchen - how to be vintage and also unique
Comments (57)Thanks, marthavila, I sometimes have to look at it through someone else's eyes to appreciate it. We bought our house 11 years ago and it was badly in need of renovation THEN. Well, time went by, we had 4 kids, dh went through 3 internet start-ups, and the renovations never got done. Lauraella, there were times when I begged dh to sell our house and move us into a 1980's tract house - anything that was functional , warm in the winter and cool in the summer (lack of AC has been one of our biggest issues; we are taking care of that with the renovation as well.) Now, we are finally doing the renovation, but living through it (we can't afford to rent) has proved to be the biggest challenge yet. The GC had to build us a temporary kitchen and a new bathroom in the basement because they tore off our kitchen and 1 1/2 baths during the gut. The only way to access the basement is to go out onto the framing and down a set of temporary stairs. For about a week, the only way down was to go out the front door, around the back of the house and down the outside cellar stairs. IT WILL ALL BE WORTH IT. That is my mantra....See MoreFinished kitchen reveal - classic white, black, brass & marble
Comments (59)Thanks for the kind words and kitchen love, everyone! oakparker22 We used Amish Custom Kitchens. Very happy with them! nosoccermom I'm sorry but I'm not at home this week, so I can't answer any dimension questions at the moment. But in terms of layout, I wouldn't change a thing. Thought maybe it would be annoying to have the fridge a little farther away from the work area, but it's not an issue at all. katieleabrown86 The black is not hard to keep clean. Sometimes crumbs do show a little more, but that's easy enough to fix. Because of the leathered finish, streaks don't show at all....See Moretwo_devons_one_boxer
