Major remodel of fireplace- question

beware

We currently have a brick fireplace (it's probably brick veneer) with a hearth that's raised about 18 inches. It is gas logs. It's all brick, except for a hefty oak mantel across the top. I'd like to:

1) lower the firebox to floor level (or raised at most 2 or 3 inches).

2) remove or cover the brick with cultured stone around the FP opening (maybe 12 inches all around), with painted wood mantel surrounding the stone (mantel would have a craftsman or shaker style)

3) For the mantel ledge, I'd like to have a piece of stained wood (maybe oak or other wood that could have a deep honey colored stain. I wouldn't use the existing oak mantle piece as it is too large).

I am wondering: has anyone here lowered a raised fireplace?? Is it realistic to think I could use the existing gas logs (they are only 8 years old, they work fine)? Any words of caution or advice? I would use professionals for all this work. Thanks!
