I'm so sorry for your experience. Salmon is a very rich fish and I wouldn't be surprised at all if that were the culprit. I have a couple of friends who have to hit the restroom immediately after eating it.

Sorry to hear about your experience. It has happened to me too so you are not alone. Whenever I eat spicy food, which I love, I have that reaction. Maybe the fish was slightly off and it was a case of food poisoning. Or it was some spice or sauce they used that didn't agree with you. Or an allergic reaction. Buy some salmon and have it at home and see if you have the same reaction.

It absolutely was something you ate. Stay away from fish. I once ate crabmeat salad for lunch and woke up that night with an allergic reaction, my throat closed up and I couldn't breathe. By the time I got to the hospital, my tongue had swelled up and I was in shock. I never eat crab or shrimp any more. They told me is i ever eat shelfish again it would kill me. Sorry you got sick,it's a warning sign to stay away from fish.

Did anyone else have the salmon? I wouldn't take this as a warning to stop eating all fish. Could have been that particular salmon, or the way it was prepared.

I have a friend who gets this reaction from eating green peppers. (I assume red peppers would do the same thing, but I don't know that.) Even a small amount of green pepper in a sauce will have her running to the bathroom.

A reaction this quickly makes me ask if you ate any fresh vegetables or fruit. Salad is often the culprit.

Guess what....you are certainly not alone. I'm sure all of us have had or will have that experience. There is nothing like a fart that has errrrrrrrr substance!

Try not to be too embarrassed although if your friends are like mine, you probably will get some kidding.

If I eat more than a couple of (small) pieces of shrimp, I have a sore throat, within 10 minutes. It lasts for a few hours.

Bee stings are difficult, as well: when I was half grown, I got a bee-sting on the cheek, and it swelled up until I could scarcely see out of that eye for about three days.

I have found lately that if I eat too much fatty food in one meal I tend to have this reaction, though not so immediately, more like all the next day. Salmon is fairly fatty and if you had French fried potatoes or rich dressing on your salad and a creamy dessert, it could cause this reaction.

OMG, Colleenoz - I had the salmon and on my salad I had blue cheese dressing, I had a tiny scoop of mashed potato's and I shared a creme broulee with my DH. I guess that is what did it. I am afraid to go out to eat again. I don't know what I will eat, I am not crazy about red meat, so salmon has always been my choice. I am still so embarrassed. I really couldn't eat much the next day either.

Mercy Melba, I've been fighting this for years. I had a similiar experience recently and we were on the interstate late at night. The first service station was closed, and I really thought I was going to have to embarrass myself in front of one of my BFFs and her DH. It's Irritable Bowel Syndrome and it's awful.

When we go on trips I probably lose weight b/c I only eat enough to sustain me, and I always have crackers in my purse. On our last trip to San Francisco, I left some awesome food on my plate b/c I knew what would happen if I didn't. I feel for you. Been there, done that more times than I care to remember. Mine usually involves a great deal of pain.

Lyndy, why not trying cooking salmon at home and see what happens? I would be surprised if you had such an immediate reaction to eating a high-fat meal. Like Colleen, I do get that reaction (I've always had difficulty processing fats), but it would happen the next day.

It's always possible your symptoms had nothing at all to do with that dinner. The cause could have been something you ate earlier in the day, or the day before. Years ago I got a serious case of salmonella from eating undercooked liver. My symptoms didn't start until the next day.

This happened to me w/ caffeine. I don't usually drink coffee, but I had discovered Vietnamese coffee (la lache is the same style), and I had I think two cups.

I have the same thing happen if I order salads. I went to lunch with my sister and mom and ordered a salad and within minutes I had a horrible upset stomach. Like you I ran from bathroom to bathroom all the way home. It's a miserable feeling.

MSG in foods does that to DH to a milder degree. But if someone in the kitchen got a little heavy-handed and mismeasured, it would be that bad.

My mother has this same problem if the lettuce has nitrates on it. I think that is what it is , anyway it is something resturants put on salad stuff to keep it fresh and krispy. I think it is a law in WA that they have to post signs about it. Mother always asks but she has been lied to about it too.

Too many nuts will do this along with soda pop. My problem has been so much better since I elimated 99% soda drinks.

Any chance you ate tomatoes sometime in the day before your dinner or at dinner? I'm thinking of the recent salmonella outbreak concerning tomatoes.

I have been diagnosed with IBS, however this was very different and I have pretty much controlled the IBS with diet - mainly portion control. I am very careful what I eat and how much and it seems to work. This was pure water and no pain what so ever, no real warning. I did call my Dr. and I am going to go see him.

You are blaming the fish, but the salad is suspect, too. Not too long ago, I got the gut rumblers and the runs from a sealed package of Cesar's salad. Turns out, it was made from lettuce that was infected. I don't have such problems if I thoroughly wash and rinse the 'greens' before making it into a salad.

Your malady hit really fast, before you got home from the meal.

That sort of thing happened to me after I ate at Morton's. Thankfully, I was already home, but was in the bathroom within 5 minutes of being home and was up all night. I never did pin-point what it was... I'm guessing maybe the wild mushroom appetizer.

lyndy - Did you call the restaurant and tell them what happened to you? They probably won't reveal anything but I think they should know about your illness. They may have received other phone calls and this might give them enough information to check into their food and prep procedures.

Happened to me yrs. ago with fish except I continued to go all night. After a brief hospital stay, it was discovered through a fecal exam that the fish had extremely high levels of mercury (which is kinda rare). You never know. I didn't eat fish for a long time!

I've had this happen to me as well and it has almost always been a salad. I have a very weird system that reacts this way with some regularity, due in part to a medication I take. The last time was after eating at Chili's.....we were at Wal-Mart when 'it' hit......4 times.

I think a lot of possibilities have been brought up and I wouldn't know how you could narrow it down. I just hope it doesn't happen again.

You mentioned watery diarrhea. My son is allergic to peanuts and his reactions have been gastrointestinal. I didn't know he was reacting at the time but in hindsight, after learning a few things about allergic reactions, I should have been tipped off because of the consistency of the vomit and diarrhea. It was very liquidy. At the time, I couldn't understand where it was all coming from since usually a child will only vomit what he has in his stomach but in an allergic reaction, your body keeps producing more of something (histamines???) and this is what was coming out of Nick. So based on the timing and the consistency of the diarrhea, I don't think you can rule out some type of allergic reaction.

I so appreciate all these responses. Everyone has given me some things to think about. I am still so upset about this that I am afraid to eat. I am going to see my gastrologist in a few weeks and I will talk to him but I still have to figure out what the trigger was. I do not want this to happen again. It was horrible.

I don't know if this was asked but did anyone else in your party have the salmon also, and if so did they feel sick as well?

Florida and CA have been cleard, but not sure if PA has been cleared. Could be salmonella. I would tell the restaurant. I believe some states if not all must report to CDC in case others had similar experience, to rule out food poison.

It takes the body 24 hours for food to 'pass'. I'd be thinking what I had eaten the night before.

Every time my mom eats at a specific restaurant in our area, a chain buffet, she doesn't make it a mile down the road. She tried eliminating things that she ate there to see if it kept happening. It didn't make any differnece what she ate there. They quit going. A neighbor's daughter can't eat salads that have been treated to be kept fresh. Right after she eats it, she has your problem.

It might take food 24 hours to pass, but it seems it doesn't for the additives used to help preserve it.
