Perfect House, Except for...

...that nasty old right of way.

Today's Chicago Tribune tells of a couple who bought a nice home in Lake Forest, IL this year. After moving in, they decided they didn't like the public walkway along their side lotline. (People walking by can see into their house!)

They asked the city to remove this obstacle to their enjoyment of their home. City said no, but it might be willing to plant some screening. That wasn't satisfactory, so the homeowners hired a firm and tore out the sidewalk.

Sadly, the neighbors are unsympathetic to the newcomers' plight. They complained that they'd lost their paved access to the local park and school.

This is a city-maintained sidewalk, laid 20 years ago over a utility easement, to facilitate this access. It will cost over $5K to replace it.

I had to laugh at a quote from Mrs. Newcomer, justifying her concerns. She said she thought she saw a man 'casing the house' from the sidewalk.

There's no sidewalk or path beside our house, but we were burgled this autumn. (Wish I'd seen some guy standing out there on a sidewalk casing out house!)
