tapmaster and young children: when/does the novelty wear off?

Hola,

My darling husband wants to get me a (foot) tapmaster for Mother's Day present. I have 2 toddlers: DS = 4years old "kid on Redbull" and DD = 2years old "CURIOUS George".

Will they play with the tapmaster all day long?

Will/does the novelty of the tapmaster wane for them?

Do you have to be a certain/have strength to press it? Can my dog turn it on also?

I know I can turn off the functionality, but that kinda defeats the whole purpose.

If your kids are anything like mine were, they'd play with it for a few minutes, show their friends a couple of times and then just think it's cool when they use it after that. They bot like gadgets and to see how tings work, but once they've studied and tested it, they really have much more exciting things to spend their time and energy on. Especially if they can't reach the water stream and splash it around yet. LOL

This question made me laugh...Good one! I have a 4 year old, who although very bright, can do something over and over for days on end, so I'm not sure how fast he'd get over the 'power' he'd have with such a 'cool' gadget! Or he'd do it for awhile, then forget about it, but in a few weeks, rediscover it and have to play with it awhile again. On second thought, since the tapmaster doesn't make music or any really annoying electronic noise, maybe it would lose its appeal more quickly. ;-)

This is hilarious. According to this Urban Dictionary definition, I am poor. I shop at Wal Mart (ALL the time, and occasionally go to Goodwill) and I do not have a Versace anything. I do know how to pronounce it now though. Seriously, I hope I am never defined by what I wear, at the least, although I certainly enjoy nice things! poor 20 up, 77 down Low-class, underpriveleged people. You will find many poor people if you go to places such as Wal-Mart, as poor people seek discounted prices as they do not have much money. Poor people will wear brands such as Faded Glory, Wrangler, and other commonly available brands, and most likely will have no knowledge of brands such as Burberry, Armani, Gucci, Versace, and other nicer brands. They will often drive used cars, typically cheaper domestic cars or inferior foreign brands such as Hyundai, typically more than five years old. Severely poor people will have cars that are ten years or older and they might purchase second-hand clothes from stores such as Goodwill. Poor people will have inferior jobs and probably make less than $50,000 a year. The definition of poor varies by region. The poorest of people will live in trailers. With no means to live lavishly, poor people will often lead a simple lifestyle. Poor kids are often unpopular at school as they can not fit in with popular children. When are your children too old to move?

My kids are 7 and 5 right now. For various reasons, I would like to move to a neighboring community. My question is, at what age does it become too hard on your children to move? My daughter was fine when we moved at that age (going into 1st grade). When they're that young I don't think it matters as much as long as you take the new neighborhood into consideration. Do you know if there will be enough kids for them to play with? I just don't want to damage my kids because I want a bigger house, a nicer yard, a 3 car garage, etc... If you feel you need the bigger house and can afford it right now, you're probably right. I can't tell you how many times we said we needed the bigger house but stayed. Life would have been so much easier. My sister moved my nephew after he finished 7th grade (middle of middle school). He was devastated and it seemed to take him at least 2 years before he was happy again. My daughter is going into 9th and she's pretty mad. I think once we move she'll be fine. My daughter doesn't like change but if it happens she can go with the flow. I would have to say that the only time I wouldn't move would be during high school, especially if the kid(s) are doing well. I couldn't imagine being in 11th or 12th grade and having to move to another school & graduate (prom) with strangers. My son went through this school system; but it's not for someone like my daughter. I've been told by people in her school that the high school she'll go to (where we plan to go) is better for a kid like her. It can be a boon to a child to move -- especially good ages are when it's time to transfer to junior high, or better, from junior high to high school. The "new kid" often gets some extra attention just because he's a novelty! Nobody at the new school will remember when he colored his teeth with crayons or added an "e" to "potato" in the spelling bee. (OK, so I borrowed that one, but I did know a kid who colored his teeth!) It can be a chance to "re-set to zero" and start fresh. My daughter has had a rough 2 years with a lot of deaths (10 in 2 years)and took it out on her friends. We're giving her a fresh start, hopefully she'll be able to make friends that aren't as cliquish as the ones she'll be leaving behind.

I did design most of the clothes I made, but I made traditional style pants, shirts, and suits for my brother. Normally I make my own patterns. As for changing one's style, when my brother was engaged, he and his fiancé refused to register for gifts because they knew that his fiancés mother would get involved. So I found out what they wanted and registered it for them, as many of their friends didn't know what to buy them. Then the mother found out about this and went to the store and changed ALL the registered items into what SHE wanted instead of what they wanted. So after the wedding, they took back all the unwanted items to the store and exchanged them for what I had registered for them. At the rehearsal dinner, someone asked my brother's MIL what she thought about the dress I had made, and she said, "I liked the bag," because I had made a custom garment bag for it. I did not realize that she was trying to insult me, and I said, "Oh, I've made tons of these." I used to make garment bags for all the dresses I made in San Francisco, but these dresses were mostly sold in New York. When I moved from San Francisco to Austin, I stayed with my sister and BIL for a month, which is when I made clothes for my sister, and I had her pick out the fabrics. I also did all her grocery shopping for her and cooked dinner every evening. The bad thing was that my BIL asked my sister why she did not cook the way I did!

@1929Spanish- I understand your position and agree with it. One of my best friends, her nieces are being raised with a staunchly "anti-girly" viewpoint. They aren't allowed to watch Disney movies, play dress up, wear girly clothes, etc. This is also not healthy! There is NOTHING wrong about caring about your appearance or wanting to make sure you look your best. It's when those wants and desires supercede anything else that it becomes a problem. When your sole, or at least primary focus becomes WHAT you look like instead of WHO you are. For me, I've got 4 daughters. I have always told my daughter's that makeup and hair is just for fun. To dress up. I also LIVE this reality by NOT wearing makeup or styling my hair in a fancy way on a daily basis. It helps that both my mother and my mother in law are the same way. We "dress up" for special occasions but on a daily basis, we don't spend an inordinate amount of time on our looks. We are clean and groomed, but not made up. My oldest is almost 13 and doesn't care at all about makeup/hair or clothes!! I have to remind her of basic grooming!! My next 2, 11 and 9 love to play dress up and get fancy and they are allowed to go hog wild with makeup, at home or on the weekends. They aren't allowed to wear it to school or out in public and they don't fight me on it either. Right now, they know it's fine and FUN but...the message I try to drive home at all times...at least so far it SEEMS I'm doing a good job of, is that, yes, makeup properly applied DOES make you look better, that's the whole point of it!! BUT...we don't NEED it to interact with others. We don't NEED others to gauge us on our looks.

Growing up in the sixties I went to an elementary school where the boys and girls shared a large communal sink in the hallway outisde of the restrooms. It had a foot pedal encircling the half round sink and we all LOVED washing our hands there! Sometimes we'd stop and wash our hands even if we didn't use the restroom. Funny how I still have fond memories of it. Even now, I showed interest as an adult when I discovered what "tap master" was on this website. Go figure.

That's cute; and how interesting that little kids were more inclined to wash their hands with it...

Huango, you could always call the kids in to turn on the water for you every time you needed it for a couple of days. Sort of an accelerated getting-old process. My grandbabies, busy learning to be grownups, of course, love to get hold of everything grownups use that they're not allowed to touch.

i don't have a tapmaster, but i do have a three-year old and your post cracked me up. my guy would be on that thing for hours every day.

I don't have a tapmaster, but my kids take joy in trying to slam the cupboard doors and drawers shut in my newly damped kitchen...

I agree, the novelty would wear off, especially since it doesn't have bright lights or make loud annoying music!

I need one in the kitchen to reach the upper cabinets (which go to the ceiling), so I can just see one little angel would just easily move it to the sink/standing there splashing water while the other angel presses the tapmaster. It's all about teamwork to make trouble. :)

rosie: you're so very right. my DS loves to 'help' me out right now, especially to help stir the whisk in the chocolate pudding (he gets to lick the whisk afterwards). So I'll ask him to 'help' me push the tapmaster to turn on the water.

neesie: maybe I should put one in the bathroom also, since it may encourage them to wash their hands more. hmmm....

edlakin: W/ my 2 kids, they would take turn trying to beat each other as who gets to push it more, for a longer time, making more splashes, etc...
(I swear, no one told me that having 2 children would be A LOT MORE than double the work.)

mls99: it's funny how kids will always find something to entertain themselves, huh? :)

Don't worry; the novelty only lasts a day. Actually, it's less of a wonder to little kids -- THEY don't know it's something new or different, any more than anything else in their world. Remember that to a toddler, a regular faucet is pretty novel, too. I think the Tapmaster seems more novel to NON-tech age people.

What IS fun to do with little kids who visit you is to tell them that you have a magic sink, and that if they just think really hard about water, it will start ....

And don't worry; the dog can't push it.
