Yup, Cherry (shaker style). No handles yet (another thread). Probably we'll use rainforest on the top. Awaiting more bids. There's more acreage than I'd realized. ouch.

IMO all kitchens that have direct connect to the backyard are the best.

It's real! It happened! They look beautiful with quality workmanship. Please post more pics after more are installed. You will remember how to cook. A kitchen with those cabs designed with such thought will inspire your memory.

ironcook: very cherry is about right. I like wood, which is good, because there's a lot of it. A decorator I am not, so the one weird stupid sop to such that I've always done is to buy cheap plastic table cloths at Ross or wherever and change them for the season. They wind up being incredibly handy for a variety of reasons. For block parties, there is no shortage of table cloths. You may notice that I threw a few on the floor just now underneath these new cabinets. They've been distributed all about on top of various appliances and things for months and months and months now. Very useful devices! And that's kind of the extent of my cutsiness and housekeeperishness. These things cost $5.

Another thing they do - and this is truly pathetic: they actually help remind me of what season we're in. Someone asked and the answer is: southern california, that's where we're located. I didn't grow up here and I'm *constantly* confused as to what month and even year it is. I am just, still, after 16 years, at sea in a fog of confusion regarding the cues of a passing year. If I could I'd put a bubble over us and let it rain down snow. :( It's true there is light, but interestingly -- it shines in a seasonal way still and I even find some of the seasonal mood affect that used to be written about so much, is actually still present - I think some component of that sadness is the actual change of sun's angle rather than absolute amount of light. Dunno.

And as for a french door in the kitchen: it was one of my axioms about this remodel. Most of my axioms went by the wayside but fortunately this remains. I do agree that an easy flow of movement from indoors to outdoors is really critical. I think it was Frank Lloyd Wright who made a big deal about this too, no? I've always thought those Roman villas with an interior courtyard or even Spanish-style (true) architecture had it right. Not enough room for that here but in the olden socal days that was the mission-norm.

Our architect-neighbor has certainly brought along this idea in his, I think basically, "over-fenestrated" rendition of our house. It's a bit of a problem in that there is so little wall space, so many windows. But, well, we should all have such problems.

BTW - in the too many windows department, who knows how I can figure out how to let anyone in socal know that I have a beautiful one of these small windows hanging around looking for a good home? I removed it in order to have a place for the stove hood. We were all sad to lose the "cutie window" but perhaps another - if I could figure out how to advertise it :) - could benefit?
