Photos! Mini kitchen facelift- opinions and comments please!

So, we were originally planning to design & build a new house; due to market circumstances, we're putting that on hold. But I had been dreaming of my fabulous new kitchen (white shaker style, soapstone, marble style) & now the current one drives me nuts!

We're not planning to change the layout of this one, even though I am painfully aware of the barrier island with the poorly placed downdraft that doesn't suck enough fumes. Basically, instead of the facelift this kitchen needs, we'll just be doing Botox ;)

Possible look?

My complaints that I'd like to address are as follows: the back side of the island is very blah and cheapo looking. I'm planning to add panels and probably paint it black. On the far side of the island across from the oven, I'm planning to eventually put in a low drawer or flip down door style microwave, then change the other space to double ovens. I'd also like to either re-stain the cabinets to a less reddish hue that matches the countertops better or paint them more of an oyster greyish taupe-y shade. If I do the paint, I'll need to re-paint the walls to something less tan, but that's okay- I think the current shade is too dark for the space anyway.

My DH hates the side by side deep fridge, so we just scored a Jenn-Air french door cabinet depth that takes panels on Ebay- supposedly brand new on a showroom floor for $1200. The black KA dishwasher isn't that old, so it will stay. The 10 year old microwave is rusting inside, so it will be replaced sometime in the next year and do the double ovens at that time. I LOVE the slate floors & the tumbled backsplash and the color scheme they provide. The countertops would not have been my choice, but I don't hate them enough to want to pay to change them. I would love to get rid of the pot rack and put in pendant lights, but I like the extra storage (too many cabinets, not enough drawers!) My question- should I stick with black appliances? Another question- I'd love to showcase my multicolored dishes better- any suggestions there? I LOVE the slate floors & the tumbled backsplash and the color scheme they provide. I hope the photos show up!
