The perils of not watching where you're going

Here are two, related to me by aquaintances. I can't think of any I myself have done although I know there are some! Not as good as these, anyway....

(1) "I was delivering pizza in the Carl Mackley Apartments, driving slowly around the parking lot looking for building C, when I saw a girl through a window taking off her clothes. I drove into the side of the building."

(2) "I got off the bus from work across the street from my house. My wife waved to me through the kitchen window and I waved back. Just then a blonde drove by in a convertible. I stared, walked toward my house and walked into a telephone pole. My wife saw the whole thing."

I laughed because that brought back a memory that had my office laughing at the time.

Back when I was a slim 18 I was walking down the aisle to my desk (we were an open office) and one of the engineers was walking behind me and when I turned in to my desk he turned right with me. He obviously wasn't looking where he was going.

Lol, that is so funny.

This wasn't so much not paying attention as not understanding the law of gravity lol.

My DF in his younger days was top fix-it guy around our house.

My DGF decided to appoint himself as top fix-it guys helper one late fall afternoon and they were on a mission to take the swamp cooler out of the bedroom window on the second floor of our house.

My DF "rigged" up a pulley system to the roof overhang above the swamp cooler to be removed and using a long rope secured the swamp cooler (otherwise known as heavy object ;0))to one end and my DGF on the ground to the other end. (You can see where this is going can't you?)

My DF sat himself upon the bedroom floor, called to my DGF to be ready below and using his feet gently nudged the swamp cooler out the window.

My DGF passed the swamp cooler somewhere in the middle of our two story house lol. He wasn't hurt but he did have to hang there a bit while top fix-it guy figured out how to quit laughing and get him down.

Of course we kids were terribly worried about DGF after we quit rolling around on the ground and came to our senses, one or two of us still get hick-ups when we remember this event happening before our eyes ;0) lol.

I've been watching this thread because I too am a newbie to lasagna beds. I see much helpful information. I do have a question, well many but I'm only asking one. I have rocky clay soil and thought I would try this lasagna thing. I actually scalped the bermuda from the area but added it back to the lasagna. I started with layers of newsprint. Then added things I already had on hand. I used the soil from the prep work, pine mulch, moldy leaf debris from the rock pile you see in the pic, leftover soil from planters including the deadroots in it, some shredded paper, had about 20 lbs of regular potting soil. Then I went to the frig and found some spent celery, lettus and some green onions. Chopped this up and added the salad to the mix. I tossed it all together and added it the bed. I soaked the paper before adding any of my mix and kept watering as I was adding the mix. It was rather soupy. Now, here's my question. I then covered it with black plastic and lined the edges with brick. I thought that baking the lasagna would speed up the break down process.I have read that others use clear plastic. Is that just to be able to see whats going on underneath or does it have to do with the sun actually getting to the mulch mixture? I finished the bed Wed. night (7-16-08) and last night I looked under the plastic which had lots of heat escaping but it seemed dry so I sprayed more water under there. Oops, Guess I had 2 questions. 1. Color of plastic to cover? 2. Should I spray with water to keep it moist? Before I started Bed with some soil mixture, I added more. Covered with the black plastic I don't mean to barge in someone else thread but I thought others looking for information may appreciate finding it in one location. Please advise. I live a few blocks from "downtown." One morning there was a knock on the door. A woman saw the disassembled futon on my front porch and wanted to know if she could have it, since it was "just sitting there." She said if no one answered the door she would have left a note. Good to know at least one person wouldn't simply take something off my porch. The futon was there because I had hauled the parts out there and then couldn't find the allen wrench to finish assembly. Many people in this town have furniture, including sofas, on their porches. The futon is my "porch couch." It's now assembled and has the cushion on it. And yes, it's still "just sitting there." Generally that is what furniture does. But that didn't stop the person who stepped over my token garden fence and clipped the flowers off the rhododendron this spring. When I told one of the other gardeners that one of my tomato plants was missing from the community garden, her immediate thought was human theft. I thought maybe a four-legged critter ate it, but maybe a two-legged pest was the real culprit.

Have bought from O many times. Always had great customer service. Just recieved my latest rug from them and they added a 15% off on top of sale. I had missed the date on it. Calling them is a good experience too. They go out of their way to answer questions. I always check other sites for the same product too. Sometimes O is a higher price. And I always go for free shipping or try to find coupons, percent off. Google the product name (and model code if possible) with words "free shipping and coupon". The coupons work half the time depending upon dates. This last purchase was another 9 X 12 wool rug. Both were great purchases and the colors wonderful. No they were not the exact as expected, but I was more than pleased with them. This last one was actually better than I'd planned. Along with colors, check on the height of pile, this can tell you even more about the rug. It is really difficult to identify the true color with any online purchase. O doesn't show the different sizes of one product found. I've had to find something and then use their search for it. Oddly, the photos of the different size/shapes of rugs will give you different monitor colors of the same rug. One looked at was rust/orange and gads...it was a really bright orange shown on another page. Reading the product reviews helps a bit in identifying a product. You can count on most of the negative reviews, but I read not long ago that people are now paid to write the positive ones. So we can't count on this side of buying now. Have been scammed once in purchasing online. Had I waited just a day and looked at the reviews it would have told me. Thankfully it was Amazon and through my credit card. Both covered the charges. Amazon now has a statement that outside links to products bought will not be covered by them. And you have to be quick with a 30 day complaint for money back on a CC. Also be sure to check how a product is shipped. If the seller says days before it even leaves a warehouse and does not have shipment tracking, I'd use another company. One purchase took close to the 30 days to get here and it wasn't until I called them, emailed 3 times in one day to get answers... over a week after placing the order the product finally shipped from warehouse. They couldn't tell me who it was shipped with, changed trucks 3 times to get here. I get a bit cautious when a company actually processes my order and the product lands on my steps within a couple days. This may sound odd, but feels like they run for the sale so I can't change my mind. Gratefully it has been a good experience and nice to see the purchase so quickly. There should be a "How to buy on the Internet" site somewhere to give us a heads up. I know there are complaint sites to read, but buying online has some cues I would like to know more about. Sorry, this was long. Bottom line on the rug is to go with your better judgement. With O I'd say yes on personal experience...

I watched the CBS shows and I've watched the Dateline and some of the Dr. Phil. I don't know what to think, other than believing an intruder is the least-likely scenario. Not impossible, but very unlikely, due to the way the note was written, the way the body was discovered, and Burke's interviews shortly after the crime and 18 months after the crime. Burke said he heard his mother come into his room and then go out of it looking for JonBenet, and then he heard her in hysterics (as he said in the interview afterward "going psycho") and just stayed in bed pretending to sleep or trying to sleep, rather than go try to find out what had happened. Picture your own kids. You burst into your 9 year old's room and then just as suddenly depart. You are frantically crying and screaming, alerting your spouse and then placing a 911 call. Your 9 year old doesn't freeze with fear. They don't hide. They also don't come ask you what's wrong. They don't go find dad and ask what's wrong. They just stay in bed and wait. The only reason I can think of for him to do this is either that he was used to the sound of adults "going psycho" in other parts of the house and did not find that unusual/alarming--or he knew what the problem was and was waiting to find out how his parents were going to handle it.

I was on my college campus, taking a short cut on the grass between two dorms. I walked between two bushes,smack thru a huge spider web. I started screaming and grasping at the sticky strings, to get them off me. Of course someone I knew saw me and started laughing.

On vacation last week, we stopped at a gas station to use the bathroom. Everywhere else we'd stopped had restrooms indoors, but at this particular place, you had to go inside and get a key to unlook the door--the bathrooms were in a building attached to a car wash.

DH got the Men's key, used the potty, returned the key.

I went in and got the Women's key and used the potty. When I walked out, DH was laughing because I had used the men's bathroom! (Evidently both doors were keyed alike!) When I was returning the key, there was a man walking out of the station with the "Men's" key--headed toward the bathrooms. Another few seconds and he would have walked in on me.

Which reminds me of one of my Perils.

I stopped at a roadside reststop to potty. I walked into the Men's open stall restroom and it was occupied with several men. I screamed at the top of my lungs. One Guy almost zipped his "business" up. One Man shouted "Wrong Side Lady". I could have died.

Many, many years ago I was in Mexico and started to go into the restroom at a restaurant when 2 guys came out and I crashed into them. They had a good laugh. I figured out what they were saying even though I don't speak Spanish. That is why I couldn't read the signs either.

Every Fall I collect soil sample for the local Farmers Elevator. Most of it is grid sampling. I use a 4 wheeler that is equipped with GPS and an onboard computer. First I map the field by driving around the perimeter. This creates a picture of the field on my screen, next the computer sets up grid points that I drive to and collect samples. There is a continuous readout so as I'm driving across the field I can see the little 4 wheeler icon moving across the screen. Last Fall I was doing a hay field and watching the screen more than I was watching where I was going. At the last second I swerved and barely missed a large hay bale in the field. I quickly looked around to see if anyone was driving by and might have seen me. Nope, I was in the clear.
