hee that's pretty good! Helps a little, anyway. :-) I hope I can talk DH into it. He generally charges $1200 for his big ones, I think, I'm not sure how much for smaller ones. He has a website and blog. (ignore his spelling and English - he's Persian and so gets it wrong sometimes - it's cute.) His website is out of date (as in, most on it is sold) but you can get an idea of his style.

Oh, and newhomebuilder, I'm not sure about framing. His big ones are painted on the sides of the canvas, so don't need framing. So given this particular space, I probably wouldn't. I'll hang it and see. If I did, it would be something thin, I think.

OK......I really like it!!! BUT....it reminds me of this original oil on canvas I already own. I paid $24 for it @ a thrift store. Size 22" X 28" w/ frame. So the price seems really high to me.....?? What does everyone else think? Is "new" art in your area high dollar? I would expect to pay around $600 new.

Does it work with the rest of your furniture and art? It is a high price for a piece you have in an out of the way place. It is lovely though and good art is worth paying for.

Well, since he's a friend, I'm getting it for less - $750, shipped to my house. His gallery prices are $2500-3500, so it's a good deal. :-)

htnspz, yes, I agree, it is still alot (even at my "friend" price) for something out of the way - but, our house is tiny (it's a 2br cottage) so even though it wouldn't be prominently displayed, it will be seen since there aren't many places to go here LOL. And it is a large wall, with a narrow aisle so I can't put furniture. I had thought of having a series of something framed (coral prints, something similarly beachy) but I think to fill up that wall it would certainly approach the amount I'll pay if I do what I normally do and find antiques and take them to a framer.

The house is still "in progress" (we've done a total reno) and I'm still decorating - but I do think it blends with the overall feel of the house.

Nicole, I like your art as well. you got a great deal for $24. The appeal of a piece varies according to the individual. Not all of us can afford to purchase a $1200 painting and finding pleasure in a piece we can afford is the true value--the appreciation. I have traveled the world & seen a great deal of art. I have seen works in galleries that are very, very expensive but not appealing to me for my home. Everyone can be a critic to what pleases them!

Lovely painting at an excellent price. (Artists need to eat and keep a roof over their heads too!) I'm a real fan of big artwork in small places instead of wimpy, timid little bits-and-bobs.

Please consider having UV film installed on your skylight though - sunlight is extremely hard on artwork. Although oil paintings don't suffer as drastically as, say, watercolors or pastels, they still degrade over time. This goes double or triple if the area heats up from the sun coming in through the skylight. If you do add artificial lighting, use a more diffuse wall-washer type light rather than a tightly focused spotlight, with a color-corrected (neodymium) incandescent bulb. Regular incandescents cast a light that is too yellow for good color rendering, you lose the impact of the cooler colors and the painting can look dingy. The neutral white light of halogens is great for seeing colors but unfortunately they crank out a LOT of heat so they need to be situated well away from any artwork.

What a lovely painting. You MUST have it! I would like to see it with a better approach, but if there's no room, so be it. Please do re-read what Johnmarie wrote about damage from sun and heat. I ruined a couple of pictures (just posters, but good ones) many years ago for not paying attention to where they were hanging.

IMO you are getting a very good price, but you know that. A good original in oil or acrylic of that size would cost $4000-$5000 and perhaps more in any of the many galleries around here - a thousand or more above value, the prices being hiked for our tourists.

We have a dear friend who is also Persian, a refugee from Khomeini, who also paints plein-air landscapes, in watercolor and acrylic. His are of Arizona and Iran, and we have one. But your friend paints places that we know well in Oregon (where DGS is). Very tempting!

Sable, yep, he's in Oregon! The prices around here (Newport, RI) would be hiked up for the tourists, too - so it's definitely a good deal.

I would definitely do the UV film on the skylight. I had thought of that, we've been discussing doing it for our south facing sunroom. I will also take johnmari's advice on the spotlight if we determine we need it. (The stairwell is small, there is a chandelier hanging opposite where the painting would be. Need to determine if that would be enough light for it.) I also wish it was a better approach - he has some smaller pieces that could go downstairs in the living room but this is the one that spoke to me, plus the subject seems it would go here in Newport better than others.
