I think I would pull some tiles in the entry and either frame near the edges in a more contrasting color like a border, or lay it in a pattern like a rug or a whimsical shape. Make it look dramatic and like you meant to do it all along and I think it would be great!

I like your idea to make a tile rug feature. Are those river rock tiles comfortable to stand on in stocking feet? Comfort would influence my choice of tile.

It's such a nightmare! I can't believe I'm two short. :( We tried to pull up the ones under the fridge but they just shatter. I'm so bummed.

I think the pebble tile in sort of an entryway design might be kind of nice. And if it isn't, THEN you get the big rug.

But first, are you SURE you can't get more? Posted all the info on it here and elsewhere, just in case?

Since it's near the back door, I would do a rectangle like a rug. Just curious though - what is the original tile? It looks very close to my bathroom tile that I bought in 2007 (so maybe not since your is older). I don't have much left but think I could dig 2 tiles out of the basement if it's the same.

Do I understand the photos right... is the tile completely set except for two empty spaces by the door there?

If it's not set and you can choose the layout for the replacements, then I agree... put a different, complementary tile in a more deliberate, intentional manner, like to define the door entry area. What are the areas you have to re-tile?

if it's all already set with two empty spaces, I guess you can chip up the surrounding.... but I can tell you from very recent experience, it's no fun to chip up tile!!! (Tip: rent an impact hammer if you're doing more than 2 or 3!)

I would use enough of the pebble stone so it looked like an area rug pattern in front of the door. Then it would look intentional. I like the pebble stone. What's that old expression about "necessity being the mother of invention?"

I think a pattern the size of a small rug near the door would look deliberate and very custom. I would not even think it was done to adjust for a shortcoming..... Great idea!

Yes, I am missing these two tiles. Those are pictures of my front door but it is going at the back door and that is still slab but it's the same cuts and layout so I used it for the pictures. Make sense? I have the partial cuts but not enough whole tiles.
I have no idea what it's called. I have the box but it's all in Italian. I bought it 9 years ago and went back to the place I bought it and they laughed at me. :( They said No way! I actually went to 20 stores...with 2 kids. :( What a day! I have a VERY curvy edge and that is what makes it so outdated I guess.

Mine is discontinued so you won't find it. It does have some rust in it. I thought yours looked rectangular instead of square, but figured it was camera angle. Now I'm not so sure - what size is yours?

Mine is Marrazzi (actually made in US not Italy) Gemini Explorer from HD. It's mostly blue-gray with some rust, 12x12 (nominal - I can measure for you). Maybe not as shiny as yours?

Confused - all tile is set except for the 2 you have covered by the pebbled tile? How are you going to get the 2 new tiles in (already looks grouted too)? What was there before? I like the look of the pebbles - if you can pull up a rug-sized area of what's there w/o chipping the ones you want to leave, I think it would look nice - built-in bootscraper LOL? But if you want me to try to find 2 blue/gray tiles and they're 12x12, I can look tomorrow. Where do you live?

Mine is a square and it's 12x12 but because of the edges it's more of an 11x11. Bummer yours is discontinued. I'm in Orange County, California. I'm not one of those OC Housewives however. ;) I wish I was then I could have any floor I wanted!!! j/k

Sorry about the confusion. No, I added on to my kitchen I will attach a picture of the part I'm talking about. I have two boxes but it's not enough. I can leave them out of anywhere in this slab but I just figured by the door because I can hide it with a rug. I just used my front door for the picture because it will be just like that when it's tile'd.

Oh, that'll be great! Just figure out a nice deliberate size for the "landing" in the pebble tile. It totally makes sense, pebbles inside the door to catch dirt, etc. What goes where the chalkboard is now? A closet or somethhing like that? I gather the door is where the plywood is to the right....

This is a totally normal thing to do, by the way. At one point we were going to have the door opening into a room with hardwood flooring, so my plan was to lay a slate tile "landing" inside the door to protect the wood floor from dirt, wet shoes, etc.

It won't look weird at all. Can you show us a floor plan of that corner showing where all the cabinetry, door, any new closet, etc will be?

Go for the 'tile rug' by the back door! I think it will look great. My guess is that a 2'x3' rug would be about right?

Which will leave you with a few tiles for repair if ever necessary, btw. (in case you haven't thought of that)

Try going over to the Professionals Forum at johnbridge.com and ask if anyone has access to the original tiles. If you have some boxes with the exact make/colour I would think someone there can help you find them.

Thanks for the feedback. I will try that forum, I would love it to all match but it not I think I'm going for the pebbles and praying it doesn't come out looking too hokey.

The corner will be cabinets just like my other ones. So we will move the sink cabinet and center it under the big window and then put a trash" cabinet to the left and to the right of the sink in the new area a new wine fridge and another matching cabinet. Hubby can make and match. :) Above it will be matching cabinets with glass just like these so it ties in the kitchen. AND yes that is my plywood door ;) It's one with all glass in the middle. I'm excited...except for missing two tiles!!

OH and I HATE photobucket. I keep resizing and saving them and it says it did it and then it's HUGE!!! :( Sorry I can't figure it out.

2. If all else fails there with finding
- I would consider a medallion in your entry way that has sense, style, format, size to the rest of your home/decor
While I like river rocks it seems to me, that random placement may not have rhyme or reason -
- A tile person could carefully remove tile from entryway to use where you need it and then install medallion

I LOVE the idea of the inset rug, but I have some concerns about using those pebble tiles, but maybe you've thought of these: 1) it's right by the door, so there'll be dirt coming in, and those pebbles are white -- so will they stain or show a lot of dirt, esp, since they're an irregular shape and will show dirt on the tops first?
2) pebble tiles means a lot of grout around the pebbles, so again, grout traps dirt. How do you feel about that? What color is the grout you'll use? If its medium or dark, then probably ok.

I do think it's a great idea, but you could go with a darker pebble if you thought dirt was an issue.

jejvtr I totally get what your saying but the problem is the rocks go with my house better than a medallion. hee hee Yes, it's sad but true. I have a country/cottage very plain house. We live by the beach and I'm just plain. I am not a medallion person AT ALL! I just couldn't do it. Maybe a shell tile or cottagy medallion, is there such thing? I appreciate the feedback and I did post on that forum and I haven't given up hope yet. :)

evilbunnie, I didn't think about the white and dirt. Hmmmm? that is a good point. Not worried about the grout because I have lived with it for 9 years and nothing shows...it's dark gray. I do need to think about the white ones. Thanks. There are also stones that are flat not round so maybe I will look at those.

I think a tile "rug" would look very nice, if you could find something low-maintenance. Didn't think about all the grout b/t the pebbles. Maybe pre-grout those with epoxy grout (ask Bill) and then lay them like normal tile?

I just checked (my day as parent helper at preschool so didn't log in til now), I have 5 whole tiles that I hate to give up, but I have 2 almost-whole ones that you could perhaps use in corners? Just a thin strip about 1/2" cut out of one side of each (can't imagine what DB was doing since I don't think I have tiny strips installed - maybe next to vanity, or sides of hamper cubby?) and a notch. So if you cut the notch out, they would be about 11 1/4" x 10 1/8" with 2 factory edges. A whole tile is app. 11 3/4" x 11 3/4". Do you have 2 corners you could hide them in instead of in front of the door (where you would need 3 factory edges)? All the tiles have some rust color in them and they are matte.

You are SOOOO SWEET to offer. Seriously that is so KIND! I'm not taking your tiles. You keep them because you never know. :) I have found a tile similar to yours at Dal Tile and I could put them in and just cover them up with a "real" throw rug. I just thought if we sell the house it will be an issue to the buyer. If I make it look intentional like I wanted a build in rock rug at least they will just think I have quirky taste. :) hee hee
You are very nice and I really appreciate the offer but I can't accept. I'm still hunting and I'm not sure what I will do. I actually like the idea of the rock/pebble thing but I just need to keep looking and make sure I get one that blends in. Also I have pieces of my tile that are cut and I could piece two of them together with super glue (maybe) and they would be not square and not the right size but hey, better than nothing. We will see.

I am glad I got some good feedback about the rock idea. It's nice to have as an option and know that other people out there like it also. I know not everyone will but if just a few say it's fun and okay then I feel better about doing it. Hey, if we all did the same thing and picked the same stuff what a boring world.

If you sell the house and they remove the throw rug they could make an issue of it during the walk-through b/c it's an obvious "flaw". Whereas if they don't like your "tile rug" then oh well, it's done, they can put a mat over it or retile the whole floor in something they like better.

I think the epoxy grout is supposed to be harder-wearing and also water-resistant if not water-proof so think that would be the thing to use inside the door. And not put a fabric rug down to hide it? Again, ask Bill. If you don't want the pebbles then I'm sure you could find some 3x12 borders and a solid field tile to coordinate with existing tile - just have straight edges and a little bit of funky grout line where they meet the wavy tile, but again that's a "taste" issue for resale not a "fix". Don't try to glue or grout cut edges together in the middle of a "whole" area. Are you quite sue you can't use the pieces you have along cabinet edges and walls, and squeeze whole tiles (cut at threshold) in front of the door? Good luck!

Unfortunatly I have to tie into the existing floor and there are already half tiles along the wall on both sides. All the whole tiles are in the middle...of course! I have enough left over cuts for my edges but just not enough whole ones. The sink cabinet is pulled out further than it will be but you can see the half tiles in front of the dishwasher next to it and in front of my soon to be door.

I think your right about making it look like I intended it to be. I'm going to have to do at least four tiles and then the half ones in front of the door also. It's gonna be some rock there. :) Who cares! It will be different and fun. Life's too short to sweat the small stuff. Everyone made me feel so much better about this I can't even begin to tell you.
