How interesting! The only thing we've ever used Velveeta for is making queso which is Velveeta and Ro-tel tomatoes. There's probably a foodie way to make the same thing, but it couldn't be faster or simpler than the Velveeta way. I wonder if Velveeta is to cheese what Spam is to ham?

I love sliced Velveeta on a cheeseburger. My stores still sell it. I may have a barbecue this weekend. Hey,I've got plenty of drinks, a three pound tube of chopped beef, some left over hamburger rolls,hot dogs. All I need is Velveeta, hot dog rolls and some salads.

Velveeta makes the best grilled cheese sandwiches. When my boys were home I would sometimes buy the big boxes of Velveeta but always stored it in aluminum foil. I buy the individual wrapped ones for our occasional sandwich now. Grilled cheese and tomato soup make a good quick winter meal.

Yep, great grilled cheeses, mac and cheese, we always have it on hand.

We always had Velveeta in our house growing up, complete with the Tupperware cheese keeper. I may still have it up in the attic somewhere. Mom used Velveeta for everything...casseroles, sandwiches, dips. I buy it every now and then, usually when DH wants Rotel or when I am planning on making 2 by 4 soup.

Velveeta has never been in my house but either has spam.

ROTFLMAO! Because this brings up a funny memory for me. I am the oldest of 6 girls. I never ate it as a kid, but periodically it was in the fridge in my youth. One day my light-bulb went off in my head! I figured out that Velveeta always showed up when Mom told us she was gonna have another baby! So for years I thought Velveeta caused pregnancy!!!

I think I still have mine. We used to use velvetta all the time.

No processed 'cheese' here. I toured the Kraft plant, guest of a childhood friend's dad, who was a VP there. I guess it's like visiting the sausage factory; you don't want to see it made. (When you melt it, you see it in almost its' original state, before it's aereated and cooled.) Is is true, though, that you can't easily melt real, aged cheddar.

I think the Velveeta/Spam analogy is perfect! Maybe we should add a slice of soft, white 'Wonder Bread'. (That's known as 'duck bread' at our house; good only for kiddies to feed to ducks.)

I don't remember ever having Velveeta in the house when I was a kid, and I'd never used it until a few years ago. Then I tasted a friend's macaroni and cheese, and it was much better than mine. Hers was made from Velveeta, so I started buying Velveeta, only for this one dish.

I have mixed it with salsa for a dip, too, now that I have it in the house.

In the 50's and 60's, Kraft Velveeta was a biggie and most folks couldn't afford (or find) the cheeses that we have available today. I remember (as a kid) how BIG a thing it was to have 'real Idaho Cheddar Cheese'....living in San Francisco. Post WWII might have had something to do with it too! My Dad would treasure every bite (of the cheddar) with Strawberry Jam. Check out those 50's and 60's cookbooks!

I remember Mom always had Velveeta when I was a kid in the '50s. There was no other American cheese that I knew of. We certainly did not have the prewrapped and/or presliced American cheese you can buy today, only Velveeta. Mom made cheese sauce with it for broccoli or cauliflower, grilled cheese sandwiches, and for casseroles.

When this tupperware piece first came out, there was American cheese in the same size package as the Velveeta. It was Kraft and was in a blue color box. I have one of those, and although, I do use Velveeta for some things, I dont think anything but the Kraft American has ever been put in mine. It actually works very well, to keep cheese nice and fresh. The American was solid like velveeta, not the sliced that we usually get today.

I used to have one of those containers and yes, I used it for the big Velveeta.

My sister always liked Velveeta, I never did. I did buy some slices with a coupon and on sale but I would mix it with Swiss or Mozzarella for grilled cheese or burgers.

And the tour comment is interesting. I know a lot of people wouldn't want to eat out if they saw restaurant kitchens! And for that matter if you *really* looked at the way people worked in their kitchens, you probably wouldn't want to eat what they made either. We forgive our own sanitation compromises but not others!

I've only had valveeta once at a friend's house when I was growing up. I don't remember if I liked it or not.

I would buy a loaf of Velveeta to christen my new Tupperware but Velveeta is expensive, IMO. I was going to make a dip that used Velveeta for a pot luck one time but I couldn't bring myself to do it. By the time I added up all the ingredients, I could have made several meals for my family. When I have purchased Velveeta, it's usually been the smaller size.

I have made this several times!

velveeta fudge
I cut the recipe in half and use a square pyrex dish

Spray a 9 x 13 inch cake pan with PAM (imitation cooking spray)

1/2 pound Velveeta
1/2 pound butter
1/2 Tbsp. vanilla
1 2lb. bag of powdered sugar
1/2 cup cocoa powder
Nuts, if desired I like it with nuts

Melt Velveeta and butter on top of stove (preferrably in a pan. Velveeta is shapely but it won't stay together when heat is applied). When melting is done, pour in remaining ingredients and mix using a hand mixer. Pour into pan and chill.

Velveeta is comfort food. I love it for grilled cheese and on cheeseburgers.

Real cheese has it place but so does Velveeta. I keep a block on hand in one of those Tupperware containers. I have several promotional ones by Tupperware that actually have Velveeta silkscreened on the side.

Those containers are also great for storing stacks of cookies or crackers without the insert. They stand up in the cupboard taking up little space.

We had a Velvetta cheese keeper when I was a kid. I'm not sure if it was the Tupperware brand though. I think our version may have been put out by Velvetta --you saved so many UPC's or something from the boxes and then mailed those in with some money. I even remember my mom getting an extra one as a gift for someone else.

Although cold velvetta is kind of spam-ish, I really like melted velvetta for lots of recipes. My mom used to make open faced toasted cheese sandwiches in the broiler intentionally burning the cheese slightly..yum.

We always had velveeta in the fridge when I was growing up and I still do consider it a staple for cooking. Everyone has already listed all of these, but grilled cheese, mac and cheese, cheesy caseroles, and many other recipes just wouldn't be the same. Velveeta melts into smooth creamy goodness that you just can't get with 'higher class' cheeses. That said, I do love a good 'real' cheese! Velveeta is more for cooking, the 'real' cheeses for snacking, at my house!
