Any plans for Canada Day?

We don't have any plans, sometimes we'll go watch the fireworks at the lake in the evening, other times we'll walk around downtown and people watch. Depends on the weather of course. Maybe one year I'll go to Ottawa for the big celebrations on Capital Hill. I'd like to do that at least once in my life.

Eeeek, did I actually say Capital Hill???????? Of course I meant Parliament Hill. Man, too much American influence in our news, the internet, etc. I am so embarassed.

Casey, I just read your post and didn't even notice you said Capital Hill, and I'm from Manitoba! We're going to have a couple of friends over for a BBQ and maybe go to the Forks for fireworks, if we can stay awake that late. Happy Canada Day!!

Pudge, Our farmer's market... -we are on the main level of a parkade so we are always in the shade and out of any rain. There are open sides somewhat except where stores attach to the parkade. So, unless there is a storm I can put up my bulletin board and pictures and not worry about anything blowing away or blowing down. -Vendors are to arrive to set up before 8:30. This is because we are inside a roped and skirted-in area and our vehicles need to be in our stalls with us. They also set up a table for us after our vehicle is in the stall. With the assortment of perennials(61), their pictures and/or real flowers (from the mother plant blooming in my yard that I placed beside the perennial for sale), baking and fresh produce it takes me about an hour to set up completely so this morning I was there about 7:40am. I also spend time arranging the plants in alphabetical order from left to right on the table so that it is easier for me to find a perennial when someone asks for a certain one. Of course, no one looking at the table would know that. They seem to be blown away by all the color of the flowers and pictures on the table. But, real flowers and/or great closeup pictures of the perennial sells it. At the end of the morning, it takes me about 1/2 hour to clean up and I have my little car all packed up and ready to go home. Everyone is amazed at how many things I can 'stuff' into the car. -The rope drops at 9am and the mad rush is on. The mad rush has let up since we opened the second entrance last year. I am beside one of the entrances and therefore have a triangular spot which is perfect for me. I rented one table (at $20 plus GST per week) and only placed one pot of each perennial on the table along with an assortment of fresh produce and baking. The extra plants are all arranged on the floor behind me beside my car. Extra baking and fresh produce is on the trunk of the car since it has to be kept off the floor according to health regulations. -We have to stay until 12 because we are roped in. So it is a commitment. I am finding that I have been totally busy with people the whole time. Because I have perennials I now hear about other's problems with their flowerbeds and they want some sort of advice on which of my perennials I have with me would work for their problem area. (Little story...young couple...just bought new home...figuring out flowers in existing flowerbeds...had no idea what this particular flower was...looked like a bleeding heart...but flowers were white...when I told him it was a white bleeding heart...phew, you should have seen the relief on his face that his mystery flower was, of course, a white bleeding heart.) So, for me with all my plants (sold 95 pots today) and extras to sell, I am quite busy the whole 3 hours. We also fill in a report to hand in to the secretary. This lets the market know how everyone is doing. I fill in how much $ wise I sold in plants or baking or crafts or whatever the topic and give the grand total at the bottom of the sheet. Do you have to do that with yours also? Pudge, do you go by yourself or do you have someone helping you? Sounds like you are in an open air farmer's market. What is your table/spot rental? What time does it start and end? Do you have part timers? What kinds of things are sold at your market? When you say high prices...can you give an example? How far is the market from your home? Can you get everything into a car that you take or do you have to take a truck...why I am asking...do you have to bring a table...you mentioned you have a canopy you bring to set up for shade over top of you. Happy Canada Day! We've traditionally spent our Independence Days near the grill, before tailgating at the local fireworks show. This year, we are setting sail to a couple of Mexican ports with two teen children and a 3-year-old grandson in tow. It should be interesting, to say the least. I learned a long time ago that, although cruise lines serve lobster, steak, etc., it's usually just mediocre. They are, after all, cooking for 2,000 people. My goal, other than to relax and get plenty of photos of the kids, is to beat my wife at Cribbage at least half a dozen times; not lose at the craps table; and come up with at least 3-4 good food-related topics for my blog. I think I'm just as excited about my Sunday lunch plans. It seems there is an Alfie's Fish 'n Chips still operating near Houston. This chain went bye bye long ago. It won't be 5-star fare ... or even 2-star. But I'll get to revisit one of my (young) childhood faves and write a Yelp! review to boot. Have a safe and happy Fourth, everyone!

We are having a party at our house for the 4th and walking to the nearby fireworks that night. Good luck with all the cooking IMA! Since it is just family and close friends coming over I asked everyone to bring a dish to share (and I told everyone what people said they were bringing so we don't have duplicates). So it makes it an easier party for us....we are just getting all the meats to grill, buns, condiments, watermelon, plastic silverware, plates, and the drinks. I figure since we almost have all holidays at our house and we do all the cooking that I wanted to take it easy for once! I love having everyone here, especially for summer parties since we have a pool, but I wish that sometimes my family would do things at their houses!

There will be a concert at the downtown market here in town during the afternoon. I'll have to check out who will be performing. Then in the evening we will either just sit out on our deck with coffee and a treat and watch the fireworks over the lake or we will head on down to the lakefront, get an ice cream and watch from there. It just depends on the weather. It's not looking too promising at the moment. They are forcasting rain and a chance of thunderstorms for most of the week. I think I'll head out tomorrow and pick up something special to grill outside regardless of the weather. Best just to plan something and then deal with whatever the weather brings. I'm going to plant a tree in memory of my nephew Tyler, who was killed by a drunk driver on July 1, 2006. Friends and family from across Canada will be doing this, so we will have trees planted in NB, ON, AB and BC. Tyler was a tree hugger, so his sister thought this would be a good way to honor his life.

Canada Day is July 1st. This year Canada will be 142 years old.

Traditions are fireworks, parades, family & neighbourhood parties, etc.

Since we've only been home from vacation a few days, we're just going to relax at home. I'll probably cook DH's favorite meal........deep fried chicken wings. I do it on the BBQ to keep the smell out of the house.

Then we'll probably have to sit in the basement to keep the neighborhood fireworks from terrorizing our dog....~sigh !

I was in Vancouver, 4 years ago, and watched their celebration of Canada Day. Still have couple flags they were handing out to everyone.

They're calling for more rain tomorrow. Some rain every day all week. We're just hanging out here, I'll do a pork in the slow-cooker.
Our apartment building is on a hill, and we're on the 7th floor.
We have a view of the downtown so we see the fireworks from our apartment. The cats aren't impressed with them, though.

I'm taking an entertainer friend to perform in a celebration in Brantford, 60 miles away. He, and I, will be hoping that it doesn't rain, but they're suggesting rain and possibly a thunderstorm.

He'll likely be there till evening, and no doubt they'll have fireworks, just at dusk ... which is after 9:30.

So I expect that we'll get back home about midnight.

Depends on the weather! It's been so rainy lately. If it's decent we may go into the city to watch some fireworks over the water.

CASEY: Being in Ottawa on Canada Day is really cool! The fireworks are amazing and the light show is something else! I didn't even notice that you said Capital Hill, lol.

It's also Princess Diana's birthday. She would have turned 49! Don't ask me why I remember that. But I think of her every Canada Day.
