What's planned? I don't know yet. We've traditionally had some fireworks for the kids and a picnic at Dave and Amanda's, but this year Amanda has to work. I'm going to take the kids to the movies toight to see "Cars 2" and I'll ask Amanda if she'd like to come here on Sunday and use the pool or maybe go out to Mother's and take a boat ride.

Since I'm still recovering from that knee surgery, it'll be quick and easy. Ashley may or may not be able to come because she had her appendix taken out last week, we're both relatively pitiful, LOL.

So, burgers and dogs, maybe. That'd make the kids happy.

Happy Canada Day and Happy 4th. of July!

Not much going on here, too hot! I think I will fix ribs, potato salad, beans and slaw on the 4th.

We have a 3 day rodeo the weekend of the 4th. I am going tonight because my older brother, who is 67 is team roping with his 15 year old granddaughter. Should be fun!

Beef short loins were on sale... split one with a friend at work. Going to build a fire in the old Weber and cook at least one... or two. One bag of squash pulp left from last year.. plan to make bread out of it this weekend. Bread and steak... should be a decent start at dinner... lots of fresh no-heat jalapenos on my plant for a veggie.

All the bartenders are running off except for my favorite. A big police/drunk driving weekend so I won't even sip a beer if I go out.

I have been working insane hours so my house is trashed... even by my pig-ish standards. Lots of dishes, laundry,... ect... get the cave ready for a few more weeks of absolute neglect.

In honor of Canada Day (I lived in Brossard, Quebec for a short while) I'm making Tarte au Sucre (Sugar Tarts) and Bumbleberry Pies (sans rhubarb), and for our Independence Day - Old Fashioned Apple Pies, Southern Sweet Potato Pies (with edge of pecans and Canadian maple syrup), Shaker Lemon Pies, and Strawberry Cream Tarts with chocolate drizzle - all of which will be offered at my booth at the Farmers Market.

Not having any family around this year for the holidays, we're just gonna grill the small bits of leftovers accumulated in the freezer and add some vegetables from the garden (Patty Pan squash grilled is to die for). But, we are going to have a nice Sunday dinner of Rosemary Parm Focaccio and French Canadian Pork Pie (Tortiere) with whatever pie didn't sell (somewhat hopeful, but then not).

HAPPY CANADA DAY to our Canadian friends.

We are very fortunate in Florida to have a large seasonal Canadian population. Heck, we even have Canadian radio which I listen to occasionally to keep a little abreast of things Canadian.

Happy Canada Day!! What a wonderful time of year to be in Canada, with the days so long now. I was shocked when I went to Vancouver in July the first time and the sunsets lasted for hours. In the tropics, they last about 10 minutes as the sun nosedives into the horizon.

No plans this week-end, other than to get as much housework and yardwork done as possible. We are planning to have a party on July 16 - early afternoon - and we want to have as much of the yard fixed up as possible. The only time I can get a lot done in the yard is during a long week-end, although we did get the pergola up in just two days of work, but that was intense.

Traffic is horrible here on holidays for getting out of town, and so we make our own holidays/long week-ends with the vacation time we have. Kevin has quite a bit, but I only have about six days accumulated because I used four days when I was sick with a bad cold last spring.

We will probably grill some salmon, since that is in season.

I knew they were nearly the same time because I went to Niagara Falls once on a 4th of July weekend, and didn't realize it was also Canada Day. A madhouse on both sides of the fall, LOL, but the fireworkds were grand...

I've been thinking and I think I want to make some shishkabobs....

Happy Canada Day!

We've traditionally spent our Independence Days near the grill, before tailgating at the local fireworks show. This year, we are setting sail to a couple of Mexican ports with two teen children and a 3-year-old grandson in tow. It should be interesting, to say the least. I learned a long time ago that, although cruise lines serve lobster, steak, etc., it's usually just mediocre. They are, after all, cooking for 2,000 people. My goal, other than to relax and get plenty of photos of the kids, is to beat my wife at Cribbage at least half a dozen times; not lose at the craps table; and come up with at least 3-4 good food-related topics for my blog.

I think I'm just as excited about my Sunday lunch plans. It seems there is an Alfie's Fish 'n Chips still operating near Houston. This chain went bye bye long ago. It won't be 5-star fare ... or even 2-star. But I'll get to revisit one of my (young) childhood faves and write a Yelp! review to boot.

Happy Canada Day to those North of the 49th and Happy 4th to those in the States!!

Life has been crazy busy here so I'm looking forward to the long weekend even though it will be crazy too. LOL

Tonight is low key with a couple of friends coming over for some shrimp on the grill and a late night dip or two in the pool. Tomorrow is a birthday/pool party. The hosts are supplying everything and double stressed not to bring anything. I'll still get the birthday boy a bottle of wine or vodka. Sunday is at my place. Smokin', grilling, swimming, and a ton of our own fireworks after dark. 37 peeps/kids so far and the phone is still ringing.... Monday will be a day of recovery as I'm sure we will be up very late or all night knowing me and a few in my group. Most are back to work on Tuesday so we planned our big bash for Sunday.

I know it's close to over, but happy Canada Day to all our neighbors to the north!

Alas, I love spending the 4th up in Tahlequah, but this year we can't do it. I can't take off work till later in the month, so we're staying put. Last summer, we watched the neighbor's fireworks, and were able to walk down the street and see the city fireworks, all at the same time the lightning bugs were flashing their strobes. It was magical.

I don't know what we'll do food wise, but I heard a bit on NPR this morning, where they had a guy on who described a stuffed poblano that sounded mighty good. I think it might be on my menu for the 4th.

My great grandfather was born just a few years after Canada's 1867 independence. Oh, the stories he would tell us about his childhood in Nova Scotia.

It's good to hear that the royals, William and Kate, are visiting at this time.
