do we need an architect?

Hello,

We would like to have someone design our remodel. The main parts would be to add on a dining room and add on an upstairs for a master suite. (There are some other small things too).

Every time I talk to someone about this, I come across different suggestions. My question is: Do I need to hire an architect? Or could I go the less expensive route and hire a designer to design, a structural engineer to stamp his/her approval and a contractor to build? Someone told me that you could even wipe out the designer, because a lot of contractors are capable of designing a nice home. I'm trying to avoid unnecssary expenses but also don't want to end up with a home that looks amateurish, because I cut the wrong corners.

I talked to a designer and he said that he would charge about 2,000 and the structural engineer would be about $300. My friend talked to an architect about 5 years ago with a similar remodel and their architect charged them $7,000 for the design.

How imporant is the architect in a remodel?

Thanks for your help.
