Hello from Western Australia (pics)

Hi everyone. I have been reading posts for quite a while and finally decided to join in. I have been patchworking for about 18mths now and have a few completed projects and a pile of UFOs. Too many ideas and too little time. I get so much inspiration from this forum and have learned a lot. I live in a small country town with two quilt shops and a good group of patchworkers so have plenty of company in my addiction. I have a long way to go as far as quilting and stick mostly to SID and a small amount of free-motion. Just don't look too closely. I am currently making I-spy quilts for my grandchildren using very simple blocks so that I can get them done for next winter.The pictures are my first completed and favourite autumn star quilt and a wall-hanging from my first workshop. Hi from Canada! I love your colour sense. Beautiful work. I made some of those folded squares - labour intensive so you must be patient!

I think your friend is probably right. -Here is a pic of a Petrophile pulchella, conestick, seed cone for you to compare. Petrophile pulchella seed cone I think what texasflip meant was that the plant couldn't be a true conifer because their seeds don't look like the seed in the left side of your picture. It's big alrighty. I have daylilies everywhere, and blisters from digging. I'm keen to avoid rust and have stripped, soaked, and nipped off a few I wasn't sure of. It's getting too late for that treatment now. I want to be able to share fans with my parents--whose farm is rust free. As it stands, I'm looking at dipping unopened buds, harvesting unopened anthers, and making early early three hours runs up to their farm. Or something like that. I wanted to just put an anther in a centrifuge tube and mail it, but my mother laughed at my naivete.

Luuk, I wish I could expect perfection of my hosta, but it is not to be. I love to garden, and hosta are my thing above all else. Wish I'd discovered them about 40 years ago so I'd have all this history with the development of hosta when the first great hybridizers were doing their thing. So it just hit me, that here we are at the far frontier of hosta culture, and it is where no man has gone before.....or close there-to. So I decided to stop stressing out about it, and figure those problems we are having in our zone is similar to a soldier/sailor at war. It can get to be ugly, you know. I am highly supportive of my hosta, and I don't criticize them for the slug holes, a bout with southern blight, some spots on the leaves, signs of nematodes, heaven forbit some frost burn (now how did that get in there?), and I decided to show the ugly with the pretty. They are doing the best they can. Why I say that is I have been repotting the big number of hosta I bought in 2012, and I am amazed that some of them are alive at all. I was so ignorant! They flourished in fact. Even when one non-draining pot smelled so musty I was shocked. Yet it was one with a root ball so dense I had to shake it to make it turn loose the old potting mix. Now that is a TOUGH HOSTA. I also have an idea why DonB has hosta leafed out and yours are still pips, Bragu. I can see Don and his DW out there on the driveway giving a big ole college try, She dressed in a green/gold (U of Guac) cheerleader outfit, he bullhorn in hand, telling every hosta GIVE IT ONE MORE FOR THE GIPPER.....the ole team spirit. Cheering them on works like a charm. And here is a picture from MY garden today....still in the camera in fact...or on the SD card not even downloaded. Note the big dude on the left margin, that is Victory elevated to give the others some shade. He is about to be relieved of western sunshine duty by a big pot of Tropicana Canna looking good and wide to assume shade duty. That canna LOVES the western sun, let HIM do that job! Victory will go to the far end of that row of golds where again he will be elevated, making a fine umbrella shape to anchor the closest row of golds which will all be fragrants, with some greens of appropriate heritage on the outer half of that double row. On beyond is taking shape in my head as the duplicates, which are sacrificial lambs if need be to take the most inhospitable location where afternoon sun is brutal and a solution escapes me...momentarily, of course. I've also decided to move the Pink Pirogue from one end of the garden (north end) to south end, 100 feet through dense hosta jungle to proceed without incident. Just I have to empty the sucker of the worst soil I ever saw, and hope the blueberries forgive me. Maybe I can make bricks from it. But all that isn't shown in this picture, unless you can see into the shadows. We are looking north here. I was out prowling the garden while dinner cooked on the stove, and light was fading. I hate to be indoors at twilight. It is the most perfect time of day. Except sunrise, when there is mist hanging in the air up in the trees. And that is when ideally, I like to go to bed.... Andrew, Your collection must be amazing, especially for Western NY! I often wonder (even here in sunny Florida) the ability to grow Thai varieties as they were hybridized to look.... and I say this with caution because I'm not and expert by no means. I have been to Hawaii, Australia and Thailand and have witnessed for myself some of the most unique cultivars of plumeria in these regions as beautiful as you could ever imagine. Taking this into account, we are trying to grow what we see in the photo and I would say most of the time we have a a beautiful plumeria, however it's not quite the same. Now I'm not talking about the fake Blue or Purples, but what I'm talking about are the multicolored with unique shaped petals. All my Thai have sensitivity issues especially to cold or colder climate. When they do bloom they look nothing like what I thought I was buying. I too have had bud drop even with the ones I've got growing in the ground. What I have noticed it's more common before the heat of summer or during huge temperature fluctuations. This could also be a result from taking plants from inside the home to outdoors? We growers have huge expectations of what we desire to see blooming and the moment they do, our passion is fulfilled and we have a mental party in our own minds of excitement and happiness! Very few people understand us, but most people can appreciate the ultimate outcome! Stuart

Welcome, from the San Francisco area of California. I love your quilts. We will learn as much from you sharing as you do from us so just join in. We put our foot in our mouths sometimes but still let it all hang out. We feel comfortable together here and you'll make a nice addition.

I am still appliquing the sheep on this one. It was such fun to do. It is from a book by Mary Tendall and Connie Tesene called "Life in the Country". This one is Winter Solstice.

Beverly, the wall-hanging is by a local quilter and shop owner. I saw the pattern in one of my boxes the other day but can't put my hand on it at the moment. Will look again when I get home later. It was a bit labour intensive but interesting to do. Doing it made me realise that my old machine was just not up to the job and I splurged on a Husquvarna Platinum which has been great. Beth

Welcome! I'm working on a star quilt too. I have 16 done and need 28, every other patch in mine will be a star and a solid print fabric inbetween. I got mine from the Country Patchwork & Craft, Vol 2, No 3. I LOVE the Austrailian quilting magazines with the quilting & sewing projects and all! They are very hard to come by here (Georgia-USA) and can only find them on the internet and sometimes when I go to visit Canada (every 2-3 yrs), they have them up there and I always buy everyone I can find! Welcome from Texas Hill country. I recently talked with a Moda salesman who noted that quilting was very popular in Australia. I've been to your country,(1971) but did not make it to Western Australia--I sure crossed a lot of creeks and visited a lot of caves though.

Your work is impressive for being so new. I hope you will continue to share your ideas and reactions. Carole

Wowza! and welcome from Tennessee! Your quilts are gorgeous. (I can tell I like them by the stabbing little pain of envy they give me.) The wall hanging is just wonderful. The border fabric you chose makes me think about the embers in a big fireplace, just before a winter's bedtime. Ahhhhhh.....

Thanks for sharing your beautiful quilts with us. I was going to ask if you visited a quilt shop in the Blue Mountain area in Australia that I've been to, but then when I noticed you are from Western Australia I realized it would be like asking someone in Florida if they shopped at a quilt store in California!
I especially like the second quilt shown, with the folded flowers. Are the centers beaded, too? Very nice colors and pattern!

I moved from Central Florida (with plenty of quilt shops) to a small Southeast Georgia town with no shops.
It does give me more time to quilt LOL!

Another welcome from the foothills of the Appalachian mountains in S.E. Ohio. What I think is so totally joyful about seeing people from other countries joining in, is the fact that our self-expression in fabric art is so universal!

When I first began quilting about two years ago, I went online to look at examples of finished patchwork. The very first really impressive site I found was a museum collection in Australia. I had tended to think of patchwork as an American artform, because of its history in our culture, but should have known that it came here from our roots in other lands.

Your work is quite lovely and I love your choice of fabrics and patterns. I also live in a rural community and tend to work on rustic or traditional patterns with an emphasis toward scrappy fabrics.

I've been quilting a long time but have NEVER considered tackling something like that! I would love to get back to Australia - it's been 10 years! I've only been Melbourne-Alice Springs & east of there)- we ran out of time!!! So glad you posted pictures - keep it up!

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I enjoy looking up the Nth American maps and seeing where you all live. I love learning about other parts of the world. Many people who visit Australia do not make it over to Perth. It is a lovely small city and there is much to see in the state but it does require quite a bit of time and many hours of travelling to see enough. Things are much closer together in the eastern states and easier to move between cities. Perth is known as the most isolated capital city in the world for good reason.
I will post more pictures soon. I have a friend staying for a few days so have been out and about quite a bit and sitting up talking until late at night so not much computer time.
The folded flower pattern is call Mayflower by Michelle Pearson of Raggedy Stitches, a Perth quilt shop. The autumn stars one was from a magazine and called morning or evening stars I think. I made up the corners when I couldn't get the piano keys to go the way I wanted. Once again, thank you for the lovely welcome. This is the first forum I go to each morning and love all the pictures and ideas. Beth
