Drywall question

I am planning on doing some drywall work in one of my rooms, and am going for a contemporary look. I've seen some spaces that have small "reveals" either by doors/windows, or by floors and ceilings. The YMCA near me has reveals that create the affect of large, different color areas of wall, with small gaps between.

How difficult is it to acheive this effect? I've done a little research on the different plastic or aluminum mouldings that can be used to create the reveals, but I'm running into problems finding any "how to" resources that explain the best way to install, up to and including how drywall mud is used in the application of these mouldings.

Any help is appreciated.

My guess would be that you would handle these like you would inside and outside corners, since it seems that is essentially what they are. I would also guess that you would want to have some sort of stud at both sides of and in the concave part of it (something to attach it to), depending on how thick the drywall is that you are using and how deep the reveal is.

Good Luck! I'm curious to see some experts recommend.

lots of factors would be needed to make that decision. how long was the water @ the bottom of the sheetrock? did it penetrate thru the sheetrock? how wet are the bottom plates? to err on the side of caution the walls could be opened 6" to 1' and left to dry for several days or putting a dehumidifier into the room(s?) to speed drying. putting the dehumidifier would be a good idea with the walls closed or open. or if hvac is installed running the a/c will dehumidify. where are you located? in my climate walls dry to inside, in cold climates walls dry to exterior. did the water exit under the bottom plates? if so this tells you that the bottom plates (also called sole plates) are not air sealed to the slab or subfloor. moisture meter would determine how wet the materials are. open cell foam will dry, and if the water was only 1" it didn't reach insulation. are wall cavities filled with foam or only partially filled? more details would help best of luck

I would skim over the roughed up areas with light coats of drywall joint compound. USG All Purpose works well. Use a wide taping knife to skim it to a very thin coat. When it is all covered, lightly sand with a sanding block and about 200 grit in a circular motion. Prime this and paint, or repaper.

Do it right. Get 5/8" drywall. Drywall is not expensive. Drywall thickness does not affect moisture, it will affect soundproofing and fireproofing. If drywall stopped moisture we would not need vapor barriers when we insulate. You can staple drywall shims on each stud instead of doing the 2x4 route if you absolutely cant get 5/8" to match. You should be using moisture resistant drywall in the bathroom and use a good primer to seal it.

Thank you all for your input! I was able to take some better pictures today. I just don't get how anyone could think this is acceptable let alone many different people that have worked on it from the painters to the trimmers. I guess it's not their problem so they just do what they are supposed to and move on. What happened to taking pride in your work?

Hi,
The shadow lines are created with metal mouldings that are applied along with the drywall. They are "J" shaped, among others. Used primarily in commercial work, they are not usually mudded in, but can be if desired. The mouldings protect and envelope the vulnerable edges of the drywall.
