Should I paint my fireplace?

My new house has a double sided fireplace. Which sounds cool, but I'm not sure I like being able to see through it to the other room. It seems to lose warmth. One side is the great room, the other is the family room.

I was thinking about painting it white. To match the trim. And also painting the shelves and the trim in the family room white. And maybe removing the decorative piece at the center? I thought that might give it a more updated feel? What do you think? Would it look awful and would I regret it forever if I painted it? Should I stain it instead? Darker? Or just leave it? I just find the oak looks a bit outdated? I'd appreciate any advice!

Oh, there is also a similar fireplace in the basement rec room, but I plan on leaving that one since they don't really have to tie in together being as they are on different floors of the house.
