sheetrock - nails or screws?
Comments (7)Jeez, are we really going down this path again Anvil? Nails are slower and more tiring to install FALSE; exactly HOW MANY houses have you installed drywall in? more likely to pop as the framing dries out FALSE; every 'nail' pop we've ever had a callback on has been....conincidentally....a screw. In my 15 years, I've had 8....that's right...EIGHT nail pops in all the houses, remodels, and additions I've done. I realize you're an architect of international recognition and repute. I'm just in the field, telling you how it really is. Nails on peremiter; screws in the field. And don't forget the glue....See MoreNewly Painted - Tons of Screw/Nail Pops
Comments (10)Thanks paintguy, The co we hired was responsible for patching all the pops and seams - and did so. I was home during the process and they didn't install additional screws. When we do our patching, we dimple the drywall, rescrew the screw, patch/sand, wait, reapply/sand and then paint. Not sure if this is the right way to do it or not, however we haven't had a pop reappear a month later. They were telling me something about the moisture of the paint causing the drywall to soften and thus allowing any marginal screws to pop through. While sounding plausible, my bs meter is going off as we amateurs have never had additional screw pops show up a month after painting - regardless of whether it was an area we patched or not. I'm also not pleased with the areas they did repair a pop as they are completely obvious in certain lighting situations. I'm completely stumped. And dismayed that we paid a highly recommended and vetted company to perform a task that us DIY'ers have done better in the past on our own....See MoreDrywall was nailed instead of screwed
Comments (4)Good question.... We have close up pictures prior to the finishing layers. I just assumed all drywall was nailed until I was rereading my contract with the builder. It also had the characteristic dents/crushed wall that a hammer makes at many/most of the nailing spots. In an effort not to assume, I will ask the builder and superintendent to ask the sub what they used....See MoreBest Way to Fix Nail / Screw Pops
Comments (4)Well, I was hoping they were screws, but you also referred to “nail pops.” ;-) Drive in a new screw first because sometimes the sheetrock is not quite tight to the stud: if the pop gets slightly more pronounced, that is what caused the problem. After putting in the new screw, cut the pop away with a razor knife. Then you could remove the old screw or screw it in a little more if it’s too high. Learn how to do this properly so you don’t break the paper surface. There are many YouTube videos on sheetrocking and how to set screws properly, and you should watch one....See Morebrickeyee
