Need help finding a simple panel bed.

We are in the final blueprint stage of building a craftsman style bungalow. I have pretty much decided to start over with almost all of my furniture except for a few antique and family pieces. I'm sick of Queen Anne legs and curvy formal furniture. We hope to furnish our new home with simple straight lines and classic wood furniture, not strictly mission style, but simple solid wood furniture.

For the master bedroom I'm looking for a panel queen bed. No curves, no carving. I don't like the slatted mission styles and I don't like light stained wood. By the way the house will have medium stained wood trim throughout. Most of the panel beds I've seen have headboards that are five to six feet tall. I really don't want one that is that tall because I would like to place the bed under the row of square windows that will run along the exterior wall. I'm not exactly sure how low those windows will be placed. At this point we can still put them where ever we want, but I'm pretty sure they won't be six feet off the ground!

So as I'm trying to coordinate finalizing the blueprints, I'm also trying to find a panel bed that will work under the windows so that we know exactly where to place the windows. Does anyone know of a recommended brand that has good quality wood furniture with a panel bed? We do live in NC and usually buy our furniture either in Hickory or at Boyles. We try to stick to mid-grade quality lines such as Thomasville, Lexington, Hickory Chair, etc. I can't break the bank on the bedroom furniture because the Stanford couch and the Stickley dining room furniture are going to take care of doing that quite nicely.

I bought my son a full sized Panel bed from Ethan Allen recently. I'm pretty sure they have twin, full and queen sizes. It's part of the Ethan Allen kids' furniture line. Quality is very nice.

I bought a simple panel bed (solid wood) about a year ago--unfinished. It cost about $800. It was maple, but it also came in pine. It also came finished, in a distressed black. Sorry I can't remember the brand--but I did see the same bed at a couple of different stores. (It was part of a complete bedroom set.)

Thanks for the great information ...patches I'll take a look at your plans...mightyanvil..thanks for taking the time to provide such great advice. This will be our "vacation" home..but it will really be a weekend get away place, that is if we can pull it off. The home will oriented so that the front of the home is north, the back south. We want views to the south and west. I was avoiding a second level because of cost, although considering a loft, but it sounds as though the rule of "cheaper to build up rather than out" applies. It's just DH, myself, and our chocolate lab. Originally we thought everything on one level but are now considering living room, kitchen, mudroom/bath on main level and bed and bath on above. We also considered a basement, as my DH wants the extra storage, but costs vs. it and just a slab foundation..not sure of the differences although there are those that say "might as well put in a basement while you're at it" We're not worried about excavation as we have a friend who'll do the job for us. We love open floor plan because we anticipate small footprint, we want back deck (but plan to build it on later) so outdoor spaces are important. We definitely want a mudroom...area to keep coats, boots, and area to rinse off dog after a run in the mud! We don't really need a garage..again, something we can add later... We live in Western Pa and do want a weather tight home, as we get more cold rainy weather than hot sunny...but want overhangs to keep direct sun out in summer, but still allow sun in winter (passive solar?)... Views to south (back) include woods and stream..views to west include woods and field. Weather hits us from north west...lots of wind from time to time. Why not a screened in porch? I love to sit out but hate the bugs! Ideally, we'd like to contract to get a "shell" built and finish the home ourselves as time/$ allow. Not sure what our options are there... I had to laugh about the home you'd described above with the various levels ..we currently have that set up...and have 5 levels and 4 sets of stairs and it drives me crazy! I can handle one set, but am a bit tired of 4. ;-)

I don't know if there's a dealer near you, but The Bedworks of Maine has pretty much what you want. I think the "Yarmouth" or "Freeport" are probably just about right. The trundle is purchased separately, see under "bedroom furniture". The furniture is very sturdy, made in Maine instead of China, and well priced.

Actually the RH bed is the look I'm going for and a couple of weeks ago I went into their store to look at it. The wood was a little darker than what I wanted and the headboard is 5.5 feet high. I think I'm going to hold out in hopes of finding something shorter. Seems almost everything most of the major furniture lines are carrying right now are on such a large scale. Personally I can't wait for this bigger is better trend to be over.

Thanks for the links, Organic! I had never heard of circle furniture so I went to their site and of course the bed that is EXACTLY like what I am looking for is the Meyer May bed. Then of course it is $3600. At that price I might as well get a Stickley bed. I'm not sure if I should lol or cry....

Thank you guys for all of the suggestions. Actually I kinda like the Basset Chatham. What do you all know of the quality of this piece? The website doesn't indicate what species of wood it is made from nor does it detail the drawer construction of the dressers. I had always thought that Basset furniture was kinda cheap (construction) but it seems like there has been a lot of shifting in the furniture industry as of late so you never know.

Personally I have found Basset furniture to be of a cheaper quality construction. They have some really pretty pieces but on their showroom floor they are already scratched and just dont have a quality feel to them.

If you live in NC why aren't you utilizing the Hickory Furniture Mart and the thousands of others around there? Gees, I would die to live around your area with all the outlets!!
