I remember him the most for being on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. It was a good show back then, and they were quite a team.

Madame Plantier is going to bloom pretty well. This is amazing to me because, on two mornings in a row, the new shoots were frozen solid and would break like glass. They wilted down, then stood up and started growing. I am seeing in the shoot tips a central flower bud that is brown and flanking buds that are developing. Most of the brown buds were too small to be seen (by half-blind me, anyway) during the freeze. On other roses that weren't protected, all the new growth was burnt to the point of uselessness. Now we are starting over with 1-2 inch shoots like it's early April after pruning.

Within a few hours of the ops, I had no discomfort whatever. As the second op was a week ago yesterday, I'm off of one set of drops, the other to go for three more weeks. The original prescription was for three items of each, and I got only one ... and the first one lasted till my need ceased. We'll see what happens with the second ... four drops a day for about 20 days more. For a while, I was having difficulty sorting out some of the letters in printing, having some trouble reading a book, but that seemed to be worse when I was tired. That seems to have cleared up. I noted that I'd see two company symbols on a car ahead of me instead of one ... four stop lights (but they all changed colour at the same time!). Didn't have trouble sorting out the lane lines, though - I was watching carefully for that. There seems to be less of that, now. They said that I might need to get a new prescription for eyeglasses in a couple of months(?) when things settle down ... ... but I haven't had a prescription for 30 years. I have needed about the strongest reading glasses (4.00) that I can find ... and they are hard to find ... but time will tell. I think that I can read more things without the glasses than I could before. All in all, I'm happy as a pig in ... ... a manure pile ... (four-letter word) ... as Dad used to say. Gosh - Dad died about 22 years ago. And I was born when he was 28, so there was 28 years difference in our ages. Thanks for your good wishes, everyone. ole joyful

Acer japonicum 'Ed Wood #2' - 2nd flush of growth in September

My Acer japonicum 'Ed Wood' continues to barely acknowledge the existence of winter, so I thought I'd provide an update. The very late growth last fall and into early winter resulted in some branch tips and buds failing to harden off, others however did harden off, amazingly. A few terminal, partly open buds died once it got really cold (14.9F), but it looks like the damage is confined to buds only, no die-back of woody branches. Those dead tips will have to initiate new buds before growing, which might take some time...I don't know. But all of the undamaged buds are now fully "popped" and expanding at a rapid pace. This started more than two weeks ago, and these expanding buds have endured temperatures down to 24.6F. As compared to all of my Acer palmatums & A. x oliverianum, 'Ed Wood' is way ahead, the others have only slightly swelling buds. This is the only A. japonicum I've grown in my own garden, other than a specimen of 'Green Cascade' (given to me many years ago by our very own gardengal!) so this is all very fascinating --at least to me-- and also pertains to some of the other threads that are currently popular, discussing "climate weirding", and how our plants are responding. The fall color on Ed Wood was drop-dead gorgeous by the way, and with all of the new growth happening at the same time, it had several flushes of color, every new green shoot eventually colored up, while all of the older foliage had long since dropped.

Oh, so very sorry to hear this. He and Carson made a great comedy team. They had chemistry that just seemed to make everything they did funny.

I always got the feeling that Johnny and Ed were actual good friends. There was a lot of good chemistry between the two of them. RIP Ed. Tell Johnny I STILL miss him on tv!

I know you're not supposed to say anything negative when someone dies, but...I've never understood how someone with so little to offer achieved such celebrity. I never even thought he was a very good straight man. After the Carson show was over...did he do something noteworthy? Did I miss something?

Seems to me, I remember hearing he was pretty poor and Trump bought his house so he could stay in it ....So he must not have done much of anything in his senior years.

Noted For: TV announcer, host, sidekick of Johnny Carson. Announcer on "Who Do You Trust?" (1956-63) and "The Tonight Show" (1962-92); host of "Star Search" (1983-94?) and "TV's Bloopers & Practical Jokes" (1984-88?).
Quotation: "Heeeeeeeerrre's Johnny!"

He was also a philanthropist and donated money quite generously to many children's charities, as well as doing many many hrs of charitable work. I saw an interview a year or so back with Ed and he said He wasn't broke and The Donald did not buy his home for pity.

I believe I saw him on Larry King a year ago with his much younger wife. She likes to shop and they like to spend. As he said then, if you spend more than you take in, you will get into financial difficulties.
