Isn't this the weekend for the N.C. retreat? Come on girls, let us know how things are going! I bet you are having a WONDERFUL time! I can't wait to hear about your weekend! Pictures....please post pictures.

Yes, this was the weekend of our retreat and it was WONDERFUL!

The weather was lousy until Saturday...but NC needed the rain really badly. I just got home and first thing got my pics uploaded and will post them as soon as I can.

A terrific time was had by all: from the Forum were Faye (aka Wendy), Fran, Jennifer in VA, GrammyP (Beverly), SunnycentralFl (Gwen), Scootersgirl (Georgia), Teresa, and quilting friends of mine Gerry and Keren. Also joining us were Gwen's DH Rob, Beverly's DH Tim, and Georgia's baby boy Mikey.

We had a wonderful large sewing room for our use, great meals - that we didn't have to cook! - fun and games, treats such as Beverly's poundcake and chocolate mice, classes on paper piecing, quilt-as-you-go, English paper piecing and we even hung a quilt show on the porch railing of the building where we were sewing.

Here we all are with the nifty ruler holders that Gwen's DH Rob made for us:

I am also a great Lawrence fan. My favorite--and I think perhaps her most original book-is Gardening for Love, a very personal book about the market bulletins published at one time by State Extemsion services through the south and in which various folks, chiefly rural, offered varoius bulbs, seeds, and plants for sale or swap. Lawrence shows a respectful affection for some of the folksy voices heard in the various listings. Lawrence was a friend/acquaintance of the Mississippi writer Eudora Welty and after you read Gardening for Love you will understand the affinity. There is also another set of gardening essays by Lawrence's friend and fellow N. C. resident, William Lanier Hunt. I forget the title but it also has interesting info about gardening in your area and the same endearing, slightly old-fashioned casually genteel tone that Lawrence has. On unhappy days I retreat into my study with a cup of coffee or tea and a couple of Lawrence's books--they are very good company.

I live in Texas, and we do have a huge ant problem. Moats have not worked for me because I can't keep them full. Between wind shake and evaporation, they are usually empty even with close attention. I simply put a tiny bit of wheel bearing grease at the very top of the hanger, and they will not cross it. I have fire ants, carpenter ants, and other smaller types that I can't identify. They all stay off. My grease is not down where a hummer is likely to get into it, and I have never seen any evidence of it getting on any hummers. Texas gets pretty hot, but I have never seen the grease melted or running. On one feeder several years ago, I continued to have problems even with the spot of grease, so I soaked a piece of coarse cotton string in grease and wrapped it a few turns around the very top of the hanger. They never crossed it. I suggest one other thing. Put up more hangers than you have feeders and move each feeder that gets invaded. After a day or so, they will appear to have abandoned that spot, but they keep checking it occasionally for several days. Just leave that spot idle for as long as needed. Regardless what solution you use, somebody will call you an idiot. Be sensible, but know that most things we do can POSSIBLY harm something SOMETIME. I have seen just about every kind of aerial combat these birds engage in, and I have seen some predicaments they get themselves into while fighting, but we can't make the world entirely safe for them. I have seen them run into door screen, windows, feeders, and each other. Let's just be sensible and feed the birds.

lschwing, I'm not really good at propagating from stem cuttings, so I can't give advice in that department. I can tell you however that they grow easily from seed. The only thing that pollinated mine were the night flying humming bird moths, the Hornworm moths. I always let a few hornworms eat a couple of tomato plants, and they returned the favor by pollinating the Mandevilla. Seed pods are skinny wishbone looking things, joined at the ends. They betray their Milkweed relationship by their shape and their silky parachutes. Seeds ripen when the pods are just getting brown so you don't have to wait until they split and send the seeds flying. It takes 2 years from seed for bloom, and since most of the ones in the trade are hybrids, your flowers will vary in color. Some of mine were almost white, some with darker pink throats, etc. I gave them up because they take a lot of space, but if you have room, go for it.

Study Clouds Link Between Pollution and Rain By Robin Lloyd Special to LiveScience posted: 23 December, 2004 7:00 a.m. ET A team of scientists has looked at clouds from both sides now and found more bad news about air pollution and global warming. For the past decade, some scientists have thought that small air-polluting particles produced by the burning of fossil fuels and then sucked into clouds acted as seeds for new cloud particles, plumping up polluted clouds with numerous and smaller cloud particles. Smaller cloud droplets are less efficient at producing rain, and the thinking was that less precipitation would yield thick balls of clouds that reflect more sunlight away from Earth. The cooling effect was thought to be strong enough to cancel the contribution of atmospheric warming from increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is the major greenhouse gas produced by human consumption of fossil fuels, along with methane, nitrous oxide, and other carbon gases. Ship tracks, the long lines of clouds downwind of ships, provided a nice opportunity to study the effect of exhaust particles, called aerosols, on clouds. However, pesky data turned up. Sometimes scientists measured more water and thicker clouds in the ship tracks. More often, less water was measured in the tracks, just the opposite of what was expected. The new study involved creating a detailed three-dimensional model for the interaction of air pollution with clouds and found that the mitigating effect of pollution only works when the air above clouds is humid. The model was tested against real data from the field and found to be very realistic. "Our findings indeed indicate that aerosol pollution will not save us from greenhouse warming to the extent that has been widely thought by the general climate community," said Andrew Ackerman of NASA's Ames Research Center. A research paper on the results by Ackerman and colleagues at the University of Tasmania, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and the University of Colorado, Boulder, was published in the Dec. 23 issue of the journal Nature. The teams approach involved a model with 45 ingredients or variables at each of a half million grid points to represent a cloud space spanning four square miles and one mile thick, solved to predict the interactions of water droplets in clouds. The approach was so complex that mathematical solutions required three days of running simulations divided into smaller pieces simultaneously on 32 computers at once, a process known as cluster computing or parallel processing. A big surprise came when the model, in one case, cranked out a relatively dry cloud despite an increase in aerosols, or air pollution. No precipitation was falling from the cloud, as well. Thats when the team noticed that the air above the clouds in this strange case was much drier than in the other meteorological cases. "We hypothesized that the dry air above the boundary layer was reducing the precipitation, and thus leading to the unexpected behavior," Ackerman told LiveScience. Sure enough, by drying out air above the simulated cloud layer, the team was able to reverse the response of cloud water to pollution in their models. The dry air resulted in less drizzle from the cloud and more rapid drying as it sucked in more air from above. Ackerman and his team also learned something about "non-precipitating clouds." It can be misleading when studying the effects of pollution on clouds to ignore small amounts of precipitation locked in clouds that do not rain. Actually, the movement of cloud droplets slowly falling within clouds can be the subtle driver of the process that results in relatively dried out, polluted clouds that are less effective at offsetting global warming.

I'm home too!
I didn't get much sewing done, this was Mikey's first time on a trip so he was quite demanding. But I had a fantastic time meeting everyone and learning some new techniques. I haven't unloaded yet but will try to post pics soon,

I made it home at 6pm, but since today was DS's 3rd birthday, we went straight out to dinner! He even fell asleep on the way home so didn't even get chance to open his presents!

We all had a great time! And though we did accomplish A LOT, No, Noocha, we didn't do ALL those quilts at retreat. Many were brought just to share, so we included them in the 'display'.

Fran & Wendy (aka Faye) both have long trips home and probably won't add their .02 cents for a while, but it was indeed a fabulous time had by all!

(We didn't have internet service or cell service (unless all the planets aligned correctly) so we weren't able to post anything earlier!)

Well... I'm Glad you girls finally checked in. I just couldn't wait to hear all about it. Teresa I'm so glad you posted your pictures. What beautiful smiles you all have. It sounds like a great time was had by all. I feel a little left out:( I would love to have gane, maybe next time. Georgia, can't wait to see your pics., and Mikey is a cutie!

It was indeed a wonderful weekend. The location was great, the food was wonderful and the company was fantastic. I can't wait for next year. Our internet was down last night, so I will post pictures this afternoon. DH and I did some bike rides and I got some great scenic pictures. They don't do justice to the beauty of the area, but will give you a good idea of just what a great area we were in.

Actually, Linda, after looking at the pictures again, We worked on 8 out of those 11 quilts pictured!! Guess we were busy!!

The meals were fantastic! We had salad/fruit bars at all meals, pork roast & green beans for dinner Thurs. with fresh made brownies, salmon, red skin potatoes and asparagus w/hollandaise sauce for dinner Fri. with pumpkin spice cake, Sat. lunch was chicken or steak fajitas with fresh roasted peppers and homemade salsa, and dinner Sat. was standing rib roast (some of it still rare!) with mashed potatoes and roasted veggies and homemade cookies.

The staff was wonderful, and the sewing space couldn't have been any better. Wonderful lighting, plenty of outlets and loads of space! Teresa definitely found us a wonderful spot to spend a weekend! By Saturday we could even see into the valley below and the mountains across!

And I just have to brag on Jennifer! What a terrific job of organization she did for our retreat! There were gift bags for all, excellent mini-lessons, and a number of games with great prizes for the winners. Some of the attendees also brought very nice gifts for all of us.

Tim and Rob were very helpful loading/unloading our cars and little Mikey kept us entertained with his lovely baby noises.

I can't wait to see some of the others' photos! We really had a lovely time getting to know "in person" our friends that we already knew from this forum. Forum friends are just "the very best friends you've never met!"

Well, we had a Quilter's Board game...but we never played it! LOL

The game we played with fabric strips was called Left-Right-Center dice game. We played with red, blue, yellow & neutrals, 5 strips of a color for each round. You roll the dice and if you get an "R" you pass a strip to the person on your right, an "L" and you pass to the left, or "C" to the center pot. Eventually, all strips end up in the center and the last person to have any left wins the bunch.

We played two rounds for each color and had loads of rip-roaring fun! You could also play with charm squares or fqs or whatever. We thought charms would be good without specific color requirements.

We talked about doing it again. Some really had to travel far to reach this one!! But the location was fabulous! It would be real easy to see us there again!

And because it rained all day Thurs & Friday, we actually got a lot of sewing done before the sunny weather got some of us outside on Saturday!!

I just want to kick myself for not going! I am in Knoxville, only about 4 hours away. Both my kids were out of school last week and I didn't have anyone to leave them with. Then last week, DH decides out of the blue to take DS on a camping trip for 4 days...the same days as the retreat! I could have packed up my DD and myself and come on over if I had known his plans in advance and had registered on time. Grrrrr...next year I will be there come hello or high water!

Saturday DH and I went to Galax and rode about 20 miles on the New River Trail. It is just as wonderful and the Virginia Creeper is.

I finally arrived home about 3 p.m. today. We spent two days on the road and a third in Intercourse, PA, heart of Amish country. That was a wonderful place and worth going out of my way for. The retreat was great although I think I gained 10 lbs. from all that wonderful food and delicious snacks. I managed to finish a generous lap size quilt top and got started on another. It was great fun to meet everyone and I too want to thank Jennifer and Teresa for organizing this. I never found my camera while I was there so don't have any pictures to add.

I'm home! We spent a couple of days in Toronto and pulled in this morning around 2am. What a WONDERFUL vacation!

The L,R,C game is a wonderful game. ;) (I won twice, lol)

Besides meeting up with a great group of friends and having 2 days to do nothing but sew, the camp itself was unbelievable. The view, the air, the staff, the facilities, the FOOD!! Everything, A++. I'd do it all again in a heartbeat.

Thanks Teresa and Jennifer for putting this together, and thanks to everyone who made the effort to come. It was great!

What a great time you all must have had and what pretty quilts came from it. I'm going on a quilting retreat in January held by the Girl Scout council for the adult leaders (one of the perks of being a girl scout leader). Seeing those photos of the NC retreat makes me even more exited about it.

I hope you plan another. It's a long flight but I'd like to try it if I can figure out how to pack a sewing machine safely in a suitcase. Love the pictures.
