Poll: Which of these two ranges for my kitchen?

Well, I painted my old range and did what I could to make it look somewhat exciting. I think its time to break down and buy a range.

I like both of these LG's and wondered in my kitchen or in general which you like better?

If any of you saw my post about pendants I decided to go without them.

i like the second one better. but i like dials/knobs.

The Thermador clicks on extralow simmer of 375 btu/100 degrees. KA only goes down to 650 btu on simmer. If you raise the Thermador simmer to 650 btu it no longer clicks. KA had ovens with self clean problems in the recent past. Salesman say those problems are in the past but have not seen a good amount of positive reviews lately confirming those problems have been resolved. The range,from low to high, and the eveness of heat produced make the Thermador burners a superior choice. If you can really afford the $2200 I would get the Thermador. If it is putting a severe strain on your finances I would skip the Thermador.

Rosie, I like the idea of mocking up with boxes. Very do-able and a worthwhile exercise. As for recessing the fridge . . . I hadn't considered that. The wall behind the stove is an exterior wall; in fact, I think that's one of the positives about this plan -- the stove can vent straight outside, the best and easiest of all possibilities. But, back to the fridge. By moving the pantry/mudroom back only slightly and by flip-flopping the pantry to the right side instead of the left side, I could recess the refrigerator those few inches. Excellent idea. Since light is the enemy of stored food, I wasn't planning windows in that pass-through area anyway. bmorepanic, I was sure you were wrong, so I went into my kitchen and tried out that corner. I don't actually have a corner right now, but I moved my countertop microwave into what would be a corner . . . and, sure enough, my average-sized microwave sticks out 6" farther on each side than I'd anticipated. Bummer because I really like that corner plan. So, while I was at Target today, I looked at smaller microwaves. I would be perfectly happy downsizing a bit -- we use it only for melting butter, cooking the occasional potato, and popping corn. I'm wondering if it'd be possible with a smaller unit. I'm going to investigate this further, but I'll do it with real measurements so I'm not caught in assumptions again! I also had two other thoughts on this subject: If I do build a specialized spot for a microwave and TV (in the corner or otherwhere), I'm going to buy TWO of the same model. If the first one should ever fail, I wouldn't be in the sad position of being unable to find a like-sized replacement. And I'm going to make double-sure that I have surge protectors on those outlets. I do believe I agree with you and taggie about moving the trash to the island. It'd still be just across from the sink, so still very convenient. (Of course, my husband will never use a trash can, no matter how accessible it may be.) This'll cut down on the size of my largest 36" drawers, but I was a little concerned about the stability of a drawer that size anyway. I think I'm ending up with LOTS of small drawers. Are small drawers useful, or should I work on trying to move things? I do have the pantry for my large stockpots, but I do need to be able to store "everyday" cookware -- you know what I mean, 2-3 quart stockpots, 8-10" frying pans, medium-sized casserole dishes -- in the kitchen. I'm thinking that I could move the KitchenAid pop-up to the far end of the dishwasher. That is probably my least-useful set of drawers anyway, so giving them up would be painless. And then I'd have an 18" 3-drawer stack by the sink and keep the 36" drawers in the island. Though it looks sensible, I do not want to move the dishwasher to the left of the sink. Doing so would place the dishwasher in the corner, which would forever be an incovenience. Also, looking over my notes, I see that I forgot that I really want a bread drawer. (My husband never throws anything away AND never manages to put the bread away.) Where would you place it? I'm thinking near the refrigerator (thinking sandwiches) is best, but I don't really see an obvious choice. Thanks for the feedback! I would welcome more!

You're not missing many other differences... the KSDB is a much better value. I think it's safe to say most of what you're paying for with the KDRS is the look. I have not seen the ranges in person so can't comment, but I would guess the KDRS is also more solidly built, has thicker metal, etc. I wouldn't put too much weight on oven capacity, it's a big marketing game all the manufacturers play but it really won't make a difference for most people. Some other differences: The KDRS has a real high temperature self cleaning cycle. The KSDB has the "Aqualift" self clean instead which has gotten many negative reviews for not working as advertised. The KDRS has a real meat probe that is wired into the oven controller and therefore can shut the oven off automatically when done cooking. The KSDB comes with a standalone meat thermometer instead, presumably to cut down on manufacturing cost. It is a wireless meat thermometer, though, so you may prefer it over the hardwired probe. The KDRS has 3 "power burners" overall (15K, 15K, 20K), the KSDB has 2 (15K, 19K).

Thank you for choosing the Appliance Forum. We hope to meet your needs. Air flow rate (CFM) requirements are not determined by the area of the room when the subject is cooking ventilation. Cooking ventilation works by capture and containment of the rising and expanding cooking plumes generated by the hot cooking surfaces. Hence there are two essential performance requirements: Capture requires that the hood overlap the expanding plumes. The plumes have various shapes and speeds, but for convenience we treat them as conical from each point on a hot cooking surface, rising upwards over a range of angles from vertical to ten degrees from vertical. This leads to the capture requirement of having the hood overlap (as much as practical and affordable) the contour of this distribution of cones, at the chosen height of the hood aperture. A three-inch hood overlap of the cooktop is often mooted as a simple version of this requirement, but in some cases is inadequate for full capture. Containment requires that the blower flow rate be high enough to ensure that the effluent in the plumes is moved to the interior side of the baffles and expelled from the house, with none allowed to reflect off of the baffles or other hood parts and escape from the hood. The nominal air speed that I suggest is adequate for residential cooking is 90 ft/min over the hood entrance aperture. 90 ft/min is equivalent to 90 CFM per square foot of hood aperture. Other points: The rising plumes can have a velocity of up to 1.2 m/s (somewhat less for induction) so the containment air velocity is used to block significant downward reflections at the baffle surface. Your two hoods should be treated independently as to requirements, except when make-up air (MUA) is addressed. I"m going to skip that subject in this message. Most importantly: Blowers are rated at zero static pressure across them, i.e., hanging free in the air. This is not the situation in the kitchen ventilation environment. Skipping the discussion of all the reasons why, I suggest you choose a blower that is rated at about 1.5X the intended actual flow rate calculated from the 90 CFM/sq. ft. requirement. Else, a more elaborate analysis is needed, and the MUA system is involved. This makes it somewhat recursive to perform. For a given flow rate, blower noise is reduced by using large blades moving a low speeds. (Consider the Casablanca fan, for example.) So it is true that a higher rated external blower will, at a setting below its maximum, be quieter than a smaller rated external blower running full speed. Typical Wolf/Broan or Abakka blowers mounted on the roof will be quieter than the baffle hiss if silencers are used in the duct path. In your case you will want two blowers and individual ducts, I think, with individual silencers. MUA comments follow in next message. kas

I like #2 better, as well. I think it's the squarer stainless backsplash part rather than the more common-looking black & SS. Also I like the knobs :)

I like the second one too, but if I hadn't seen your current range with the knobs, I may not have picked that one. ;)

Thanks for the pendant update. I wondered what you decided. I think I'm going to just go with cans too.

Gosh thanks everyone! That was super quick!

I am glad I mentioned the pendants Breezy.

You know... it sounds silly but I might miss my sort of vintage looking range! haha Its just chipping and stains easily. Gotta move on I guess.

I like the knobs too.

You're probably also better off going with the one with the fewest electronics.

By the way, the kitchen looks great.

I like your current range first. It has major character. We looked at both of the LG ranges. Have you seen/felt them in the store? The touchpad on the knob-less unit feels really flimsy. We wanted to get an LG range to match the LG fridge we have, but we ended up with a Samsung range with knobs & convection. I can't recall what it was, but something was a real turn-off with the LG. So.... new question... should I get the LG with the knobs?... shop around or keep what I have now?

Wait a minute--there's nothing actually WRONG with the old one? Keep it! :)

Or at least keep it until you find a range that you know you want.

I'll be the lone dissenter in that I don't like the one with the knobs. Look into the Samsung if you like that style.

We have a Samsung induction, but you cannnot tell the look of it from the other ranges. It has performed well for a year. Our TG turkey cooked in a little over 2 hours on the convection roast option.

I want to know about the painted range. How did you do this? I'm impressed!

Is there something wrong with it? If you want to liven up the kitchen, a new range is only going to do so in your head, not in mine. There's nothing wrong with the existing one unless there's something wrong with it functionally.

Well it actually does work. However, the paint is coming off and all the stains are a pain to get off because well... it IS spray painted and I worry about it peeling off when I scrub it. So.... it would be soooo nice to have a new range that does not peel and I can clean without worry.

Florantha... my range is soooo old it does not even have a window and has this heat proof foam in between the glass and the internal wall. So we took everything apart that we could and I spray painted it with a hammered finish that was a sort of pewter color. It looks like a pewter/orb color. I put back on the off white knobs and it looked like a vintage piece. Who woulda thought?

So... I do really like the LG. I do not want to invest too much money as I am not planning to live here for more than a couple of more years and my house is not worth a ton or anything... do not want to overspend on improvements.

Thanks guys. Guess I am going to have to think on this one.

If I get the new one... I will be sure to take pics. I promise!

#2 is way nicer looking. If the features are equal, then it would be an easy decision for me.

I think you should watch for stoves on CL. I got a real break on my wall oven (new, with knobs, lol).

We had an LG fridge in our last house, which we loved and our washer/dryer set here is wonderful. Even my old LG cell phone was nice.

No window? No wonder it's so cool and mysterious looking. That and the paint. Honestly, you could throw anything in there and it'll look wonderful. You don't have a real problem!

How much would it cost to get a professional enamel job done on your old one, so that it is washable again without the paint coming off?

I don't see a problem having no window in the oven door -- you can never see through the darned things anyway, LOL!

So... I do really like the LG.

if you really want the range, then go for it! my suggestion, encouraging you to keep the old one, was only IF it was working AND you still like it.

you might as well get a couple years of use/enjoyment out of it before you sell. you may end up buying a new one before putting it on the market anyway. good luck!
