Any big projects this week? Let's share?

Just for grins and giggles...anyone doing any big projects in the next week or two? I have decided to forgo painting the window trim in the kitchen for a few weeks so that I can focus on getting the garage reorganized.

Yesterday a 20' conex was delivered for me to fill with the CRAP in my garage (after three years of construction, it's literally packed with just a path to the door). I'll take some before pics today to show the mess (though I have gotten rid of a couple of stacks in the conex already).

I have to get it all done before we leave for IVF on the 19th (I can't do any heavy lifting after the procedure). I'm hoping to get it empty this week and get the floor painted, then build the cabinet boxes and get the conex unloaded before the 19th. I wanted to paint the walls but I'm not sure I can get that done in the short time, but the floor cabinets I am getting all have wheels so I can have them moved and paint later.

Anyone else got a big project in the works? New drapery? Painting, etc? It's always fun to share the before and after pics :)

Our daughters' bedroom. We bought our "labor of love" fixer upper 2 years ago and never finished any bedrooms. So last weekend, DH primed and painted. The weekend before he finished all the window casings and crown moulding and baseboard moulding. Hoping to get all the trim painted by this weekend so we can move them back in. It's really tough getting them ready in the morning with their clothes in so many different places. Hoping to post pics next week.
On a side note: - a very dear friend of mine just gave birth last week to her first a product of IVF after 5 years of infertility. Wishing you the best!

Hubby and I started working on painting the hideous brick columns on the front of our hideous house. We got the power washing done and acquired the needed supplies last Saturday. Woke up bright and early Sunday morning to fix the cracks but it was too blasted cold and windy. Then Hubby got called over to Mom's house to deal with a crisis and the day was shot. Hopefully we'll get it done some time in the near future. I've been wanting to do this for about a year and a half now.

Here's what the house looked like before we painted the main part and installed new gutters:

This is really a great thread! I just wanted to chime in a bit. I just finished planting 140 trees on about 1 acre, and it went pretty well. I planted: 25 Common Lilac 15 Manchurian Crab 25 White Pine 32 White Spruce 10 Bur Oak 5 Paper Birch 5 Silver Maple 5 Black Cherry 5 Red Oak 5 Rugosa Rose 2 Red Maple 5 Red Pine 4 Hybrid Poplar In addition, this summer, I planted 4 larger trees... a bur oak, an Autumn Blaze Maple, a Siouxland Cottonwood, and a Red Splendor Crab It will be interesting to see how fast everything grows. The clone of Hybrid Poplar I planted can grow anywhere from 5-10 feet per year.. while the bur oak will grow at a glacial 6-18" per year over its entire life. In 1996, about 60 red pines, 10 white pines, and 10 black hills and blue spruce were planted on our land. In 2007, the tallest Red Pine is about 15 feet tall, the tallest White pine is about 12 feet tall, and the tallest spruce is 7 feet tall. Of course, these were all started from seedlings with no weed control for the first 3 years, and only mowing after that (when we moved in). We no longer mow the eastern portion of the property, where red pines are growing. There are a few clearings among the trees, and some shrubs are starting to become established. Among them are Rugosa Rose, low bush blueberry, chokecherry, and American Hazelnut. To date, not one hardwood tree has seeded. Under our deck, however, about 6 Boxelder seeds germinated, and one vigorous and desperate sapling is about 4 feet tall in its second year. I will transplant it to the edge of our property when the leaves drop... Otherwise, the land we own on a lake is already forested... and it's more of a question of management than anything. I desperately want to clear some of the underbrush (it's nearly impossible to walk through the woods here... so thick with underbrush). Between the Beaked Hazel, tree saplings, fallen logs, grass clumps, and various other shrubs, if yo'ure not tripping and trying to regain balance, you have several small branches trying to enter your head through your eye sockets. You basically have to close your eyes and bore your way through the woods with your hands in front of you, shielding your face.

Week 177 - Big or Small - Battle of the island

It has been a long time since I had an island and when I did it was pretty small, prep space only, no seating. It was useful but it was also in a kitchen that was segregated from the rest of the house so there was no “island as a central spot”. Since then we have had 2 peninsulas, one with an overhang, but never used it for seating, only prep. All of those kitchens were tight on counter space so the prep space of the island/peninsula was very needed. Our remodel plan has a large island (111 x 40) with no sink or cooktop and seating for 4. I can’t wait! It will be the divider between the kitchen and living room and open to the dining room and I think it will become a central gathering spot in the way a peninsula never would have (for us). Plus, we are tripping over each other in our tiny workspace today, so having all that expanse to work at, in addition to a lot of perimeter counters, sounds like heaven to me! Every time I find myself short of space in the kitchen (baking cakes and cupcakes last weekend for the elementary school fun fair!) I find myself thinking “next year I can do this on the island!”.

Jennifer, It is crazy what the wind can do! I hate our windy March weather and always look forward to the calmer weather of April. Let's hope that we get calmer weather in April this year. Jen, There's a dog like that in every crowd, isn't there! I am laughing so hard, and I bet the doggy parents were too. We have had an occasional mud-loving dog too. Larry, I've lost my light shelf in the garage before, so it can be done. Luckily it was just behind and underneath a lot of junk and I dug it out. I hope you can find yours and don't have to build a new one. Nancy, I find zone 7 a bit harder than zone 8 even though we only moved 80 miles north....it is the way the cold nights just keep coming back after a relatively long period of warmer nights. I can look at our temperatures for this week and feel like I could put tomato plants in the ground by the end of the week, and it might work, but then April could arrive and bring back cold nights like it did last year. That's the hardest part for me....the huge inconsistencies in the weather. Then, there's those years we warm up really early and I love, love, love that because I can plant earlier with relative peace of mind, but.....a warm February and warm March usually mean a hot summer, so are they really a good sign after all? Oh, and microclimate is everything. They said we'd be 37 last night, then dropped it to 36....and, because our microclimate doesn't take orders from the NWS, our overnight low was 31 here at the house and 29 at our Mesonet station. So, I've learned I cannot trust the forecast either. It is maddening. I cannot even imagine the adjustments you'd had to make going from zone 3 to zone 7! My tomato plants had 4 hours of sunlight and very light wind yesterday and looked pretty darn happy by the time I brought them inside. So, today we're going to put them out for 5 hours after the chilly air warms up a bit. I keep putting off potting them up again even though I have all the supplies on hand and can do it. I really must do it tomorrow. I must. I'd start potting up today but Tim and I have a day of outdoor chores planned. On the other hand, this week is Spring Break and I'll have both the girls here with me, so I might be too busy playing with baby dolls with the little one and doing crafts and baking with the older one. I am trying to make the most of the time we have together here while they are staying with us because their new house is almost finished and they won't be here much longer. Unless, that is, my son has another day like yesterday.....you can skip the rest if you aren't interested in house mysteries because it isn't gardening-related. Their house is almost done, but you know, once you start poking around in an old house, there is no telling what you'll discover. Their house was redone in the 2005-06 time frame, and I'm not sure what all that involved but suspect it did involved total modernization that include putting up new drywall everywhere, which wouldn't have been easy in a house with 11' ceilings. I know it included a kitchen remodel with a sincere attempt to keep the old charm (successfully too) and new double-paned custom windows in the old Victorian style (very tall windows---about 7'-8' tall and thinner than modern day windows), and this probably also is when the central HVAC system was installed. However, there remains a huge attic fan that I cannot even describe (I'll try to on some boring rainy day) that likely dates back to the early days. While most of the house somewhat makes sense, the closet in the master bedroom has been a odd looking thing all along that I had believed was not always a closet. It does have drywall but had carpet whereas the rest of the house had hardwood except for tile in the kitchen and bathrooms. It also has an oddly-placed strip of border type wallpaper at about chair-rail height but nothing but painted drywall above and below, and the stupid border was a MLB one. In a closet. A closet with a mini-closet built in at the north end. So, with questions about the weird closet (honestly, big enough to have been nursery or a toddler's bedroom) in his mind, Chris went exploring. He pulled up the carpet intending to buy and lay hardwood if he could find a close match to the color of their existing flooring. Instead, he found the home's original hardwood from 1932, albeit covered in what looks like a gray paint. It sands off easily though, so he's going to restore the closet floors. I'm guessing that closet is maybe 5' wide and 12 to 14' long. Intrigued by the hardwood, he began peeling off the wallpaper border, but only drywall was beneath it. So, he then tore out the wall that separated the mini closet at the end of the big closet (after calling Tim and I to consult on whether it was load-bearing----which it was not). Anyhow, eventually he was sending us photos of shiplap walls, with tons of nails---some of which look handmade and likely date back to 1932. He found a beadboard ceiling--you know, the old original beadboard that was put up one skinny board at a time. After he kept sending us photos, we dropped the projects we were working on outdoors, carried in the tomato plants, and drove up there to see the stuff he was uncovering because by then we were just too curious about how it all looked in person. So, once we got there, it got really interesting. To get to the shiplap he had to remove very thick drywall that looks like it is 5/8" thick, and beneath that he found three separate layers of wallpaper---one obviously from the 1960s, one from around the late 1940s or early 1950s and one from the 1930s. There were layers of cheesecloth between each wallpaper layer, and the bottom wallpaper layer wasn't glued down...it was nailed down! My word! I never heard of that before. Would they have wallpapered a closet back then and didn't they have wallpaper paste? The other bedrooms have tiny closets more typical of that time frame, so we think that my original belief from the very first time we saw the house that the closet originally was a dressing room or a nursery probably is accurate, and the tiny closet within the closet was the original closet. In the north wall of that tiny closet, a large section of shiplap didn't match the other shiplap exactly and had been pieced in to fill what probably was an exterior window back in the day. So.....now that they have found the hidden history of that room buried there in the closet, they want to take down the rest of the drywall in the closet, stain it a walnut color, refinish the floors, turn 1/3 of it into a nice, neat closet for them with built-in shelving and clothing racks (they are minimalists and don't hang on to huge amounts of clothing that they don't wear....) and then turn the other half of the closet into a nice little office type nook with a desk and space for a computer and all that. I think this project will only take a week or so extra, but you know I'm laughing....because now they're already talking about 'someday' doing something in the other rooms, maybe exposing the beadboard ceilings or something. Oh, and the closet always had very old, very nice trim around the interior of the closet door, but it was flush with the drywall....so now we know why....they added the drywall and cut it to fit around the old, existing trim around the door. We had puzzled over why there was trim around the door on the interior of the closet. This is like being a house detective--figuring out what was done and when and how and why. That sort of project to uncover more of their home's hidden history will have to wait though because they don't intend to do it before they move in. The longer they work on the house, the more they fall in love with with its history. They had intended to remove and replace an old side door that leads out to the driveway at the back of the house, but when they discovered it was the original front door with the original hardware and huge, thick locks, they decided to keep it. It also has one of those old crystal doorknobs. (A neighboring home still has this exact same door as the front door, so they're guessing it was moved from the front to the side during an earlier remodeling.) Anyhow, another big project like this closet, squeezed in between their work days, gives us at least another week with them here in our house with us so we aren't complaining. I suspect that our house will be much too quiet once they move into theirs, and I think they'll love the little bit of history they've exposed in their oversized closet. See, this is why we are so far behind on everything at our house right now....because we drop our projects to go help with theirs, or just to go see what they're doing. I do know that the employee in the paint department at Lowe's knows Jana by sight now, knows just what colors of paint she keeps buying more of, and was totally thrown for a loop when Jana bought a new color yesterday....lol. While we were there, I did study the yard, which seems mostly dirt and weeds at this point. They wanted to know if they have enough sunshine to grow bermuda grass there, and I think they do, so we discussed the timing of planting it, seed vs. sod, etc. They have liriope on either side of their front walkway, a couple of sweetgum trees in the front yard, and maybe one in the back (but lots of shade from trees on adjacent properties), and one rose bush, so the yard does need some work and some shrubs planted and such. The ten year old spent much of her day raking up tons of autumn leaves, and I intend to go up there today and bring home those leaves for my compost pile if Tim and I finish up all our outdoor projects on time to do so today. Marilyn_c — I’m not sure what isinglass is, I’ve heard people call different things isinglass, so I’m gonna look that up now. I would need to see closer pictures of your find, but it looks like slag glass to me. I’ve read that pink/red (if it’s slag glass) is rare. Circa 1850-1870 (just an amateur guess from a dark picture). I love the period and style! Great find!! If you ever have the opportunity to take that lamp to antiques roadshow, they may give you some interesting news. Someday I’ll take my grandmother’s lamp to an antiques dealer and see who knows what about it. She didn’t know how old it was or who made it.

New curtains for the living room - will try hanging them tonight but they will probably have to be shortened. Also having new cushions made for two chairs, as soon as I find someone to make them; already have the fabric. Wood blind and curtains for the breakfast/TV room, matching the living room (it's the original dining room).

The rest is just tidying and organizing. I've applied for a refi and been advised not do do anything substantial until it closes, which is not imminent.

We have finally gotten around to painting the formal dining room in our 1902 Colonial Revival...ended up going with bm bennington gray (really kind of a mushroom - y neutral in this light). I'm a little anxious to see it all come together - hanging drapes, heavy mirror, art, et cetera. Have my fingers crossed that we'll be happy with the finished product! Fun thread, igloo - let's all get some pictures up!

I'm (re)planting three gardens this week and my house inside looks like someone stirred it with a stick! DS has graduated from grad school and is home for the summer. His stuff from his flat at college is stacked everywhere! We're trying to deal with that this week, too.
And, he's just told me that he's invited the head of one of the university's departments to come for a visit with us in a couple of weeks :~O (Sooooo, those are my projects for the next two weeks.

I've been working on my new "cottage" garden for the past week. It's too big to call a flower bed. Here's a before picture taken after the new addition:

I still have about 30 plants to put in that are in flats on the porch, but this is what it looks like now. IF they grow, the whole areas will be flush with flowers. Which I'll take a picture of once they're all planted and have somewhat grown.

What's funny is the front now faces north so I thought I'd have to do shade gardening. Wrong. It gets full sun except the front porch, so I was really lucky in buying a lot of new plants I've never grown before. Not shown are the morning glory, four o'clock, Daylily and moonflowers growing all over the place. I keep them out of my garden though.

I think I got "projected out" - minor things organizing - thinking about how to pull the sewing area together - , tennis (does that count?), and end of school year kiddie things

Thoughts and prayers are with you and yours for your successful IVF - God willing you will have a March baby! My first three were all March - 2 dd had same due dates 3 yrs apart - 2nd one was born on leap yr or they likely would share same b-day -

3 porches to paint and the whole wall around the pool to patch and paint. Also got my order from Santa Rosa gardens tonight so have about 75 plants from them and the order from Brushwood is due in the next day or so...nope nothin' to do...I am alredy tired. oakley and lynn wanna share and help each other ???

This is how we wind up with our train wrecks...
I have always dreamed of a classic Victorian painted bright, clear yellow with a green roof, white trim and black accents. Hubby put an absolute veto on black so we wound up with red. The columns are on the way out so I decided to just have some fun with them. Besides, other than that there isn't much to "accent" on this house. We also knew the bricks would not be staying as they are so didn't bother adding them into the color equation. Many stalled projects and crises later, the bricks are still unchanged and the hideous arches remain. Maybe some day I'll get a little closer to what it is that I truly want. Until then I cringe every time I pull up to our house.

Hoping everything goes well on the 19th! Don't overdo!
Our big project should start this weekend. Painting the new garage we had built this spring. The builder just has the siding on the dormer to finish. Hopefully that gets done before the weekend.

These are the colors. I painted a scrap piece of siding. The green will be the body color, the straw will be the trim and the rust will be the detail. The inset piece is a metal sample for the lights we are considering(the metal piece scanned brighter than it really is)

Thanks for the kind thoughts all :) I spoke with the embryologist today and he was more than positive...he's really expecting this to work so I hope we don't disapoint him LOL

DS was sick sick sick today so I didn't get much garage clearing done :( He's been clingy with a high fever, and when that happens all of the world stops LOL If I see another Thomas video I'm gonna scream!

PB did I ever tell you...I like the arches LOL

And thanks for fun pics! I'll post some tomorrow. The nanny is back to work tomorrow so I can work again. One of the biddie's from up the hill is already complaining that the conex is ruining her view (she does not have one...she's a block away and her windows are blocked by trees...you can't see the freaking top of my unit from heres LOL) DH being the mental midget he can be on rare occasions...told the association it will be gone in a week? WHAT????? The 19th darling...for gads sake. Grrr He's wonderful normally, but he expects me to work at pre-sickbaby pace, in my current, broken wrist (I'm still only 30% of the stregnth I had)sickbaby world. Things take five times as long unfortunately!

Oh well we'll see how it goes LOL I may be a busy girl on the 19th LOL

Ypu can have them if you want to come get them - as long as I get some of the "salvage" from that Victorian ;).

The arches aren't terrible in and of themselves, but with the stupid brick columns and no other "Spanish" feature they look just like what they are - a pitiful attempt to make a cheaply=built tract home look "unique". Bleh.

We'll definitely be sending lots of positive thoughts your way.

Wow, lots of very cool projects going on.

What's a conex? Iggy, best of luck on the 19th and take it easy after that. Don't you have a move coming up? Hey, will you soon be Iggy Sulaiman? ;o) Please tell us all 14 of them will be redheads and as cute as the little heartbreaker you already have. One look at that kid of yours and I was head over heels.

I'm in a RED mood.

Yesterday I painted a tray, a bucket and a breadbox red. I intend to paint designs on them and they'll go in my kitchen.

Today I painted the front door red. It was a comedy of errors and I wasn't sure if it worked out or not -- it ended up kind of looking like a wood-grained red door. A neighbor lady just came over and said it looked awesome, and my son dropped by and said the same thing. Woohoo!!! Now all I have to do is polyurethane it and it needs new door knobs and dead bolt.

I also painted two planters red to match the front door. I'll do decorative painting on them too, then spar varnish them, then plant junipers in them and put them at the corners of my garage.

Now I get to start the decorative painting.

Still need to get my garden weeded and planted, and have more weeding to do in the back yard, then once the planters are painted I'll plant the junipers.

I am packing up and going on vacation on Saturday. But, before I go I have to finish my kitchen project I started a few weeks ago. So today and tomorrow I will be painting the trim and caulking. If all goes well I will be done by Friday so I can then pack---LOL.

LOL Oceanna you need to wear a mask :oP Those fumes are getting to you heh heh

We are only implanting two for an 82% chance of success...if we were any more successful we'd have to reduce the pregnancy and I don't want to have to do that! And we will only implant the ones with red hair LOL cuz I want another little cutie with curly red hair heh heh With my luck we'll get some freaking blond giant gene that creeped up from ten million years of genetic family history :oP But if the little giant blond is healthy :) We'll take it!

A conex is the container you see on the back of a semi truck. They set on top of the trailor of the semi, or you often see them on railroad cars. I'll take some pics today :) It's big! I'm almosted tempted to host a dinner party in it just for fun LOL

Pb I have some green trim we'll be removing from the victorian and you can have all of the purple carpet you want :oP

Ava...honey hurry and get it done...I need you over here for the same project LOL

Igloochic - good luck with the IVF. Are you doing PGD? DD is an IVF/PGD baby. I only had 2 "normal" embies out of 12 each round (2 rounds). Since you've already done 1 round this one will be successful!

How did you break your wrist? Hope that is better soon - are you in a cast for a while?

Iggy, hehehe! Yep I've probably breathed a lot of paint fumes in the last few days. I wish you the healthiest, happiest, prettiest baby GIRL! Think pink!

Oh yeah, I got a conex when I moved, and filled it too, all 15' long of it. I just never heard it called that. When did you break your wrist, and how? Why don't you hire a strong teenager or two to pitch things in that conex for you? All you'll have to do is point your delicate little pointer finger and say "take that, and that, and that..."

Igloochic- Best of Luck on the 19th!!!

I have two old windows to paint and add flower boxes to- these will go on the privacy fence we are in the process of installing.

Finish planting my flowers/plants- I have about 40 to get in the ground.

Paint the trim in DD's room and it will be finished- well except the fireplace and I believe I will need help from the creative people on this forum.

Reorganize the storage shed.

Getting all unneeded items out of the house for a yard sale at the end of the month.

Well this is the list that should keep me busy until Sunday- then DH will be home and we will start working on installing the privacy fence again.

I'm spending the week recovering from last week's overexertions and soaking the scabs off the very nasty sunburn I got Memorial Day weekend. Bleah. This weekend we're finishing the porch floor installation, sanding down and repriming the wonky corner where the floorboards meet at right angles at two different tilts and the board corners stick up, and epoxy-consolidating two column supports that couldn't be replaced. I also need to get in touch with Sikkens about how to clean the primed floor in order to put the second coat of opaque stain on (it poured for four days last week and the flooring got muddy during installation) and put in the order for railing parts at Vintage Woodworks since we finally got the building permit to replace the porch stairs.

Not a big project but I'm dusting off my 40 year old sewing machine for the first time in years and making a square topper for a round table. If this works out I have lots of plans for WT, chair covers, and bedskirts.

Outside of a little planting, I don't have any plans for a project this summer. Too busy making guest list for parties, and the wedding. My daughter gets married at the end of September. Lots more to do. I am starting to panic!

No big projects in the works for me this year...except for DD2's wedding in October. But I do have a lot of little ones to finish up.

In fact, I'm taking a week of vacation next week to get caught up on some of them. One is to remove this STUPID ledge in my LR bay window. It's too small to be a seat, but not quite deep enough to be a good plant shelf. It's just annoying. So I want it gone then I can finally hem the sheers for that window. I should also finally tile the hearth for the LR fireplace. But we never use the LR, so those projects tend to get put off.

I'm painting my formica kitchen cabinets white. I'm using UMA for a bonder & so far it's working great. I spent an hour today trying to find the nicest handles for the best price. I'm redoing my kitchen on a tight budget. I can splurge a little in one area & I think that'll be my granite countertops. So if I can get my cabinets painted by next week, I'll be pleased.

Good luck on the 19th! (I'm with you on the red heads!!) I often babysit for two IVF babies who are now 9 and 7. They are normal double trouble, but very sweet!
My projects are curtains for almost every window in my house and kitchen curtains for DS and DIL! I have already done most of the outside work, as we installed a new patio and none of the existing garden stuff looked right.

Good luck Igloo.82% sounds pretty darn good to me. The main project is to put in a patio with the 1880s bricks I scored for free from CL a couple of years ago. Tired having a stack of bricks behind the garage and tired of not having a patio. We are taking vacation 3rd week of June to do it. Well, someone has to supervise, right? I can't do much of the work anymore.

We were planning on finishing off the staining of our exterior rough-sawn timber window trim this weekend, but with the rainy weather we've been having for the last few weeks that's not going to happen. Since our house is being appraised Monday for our refi I'll probably just be cleaning and organizing instead.

Good luck with the IVF and try not to work too hard!

Finished stripping and restaining the wood moldings in my sitting room and now I am working on the dining room, which you can see at the back of this picture. Messy, stinky job, but I sure do like it when it is finished.

Igloo, I am sending out huge positive vibes for a successful pregnancy. So glad they finally came up with a better term than they used when we went through the process of trying to have a 'test tube baby'.

Moved into my new closet and refinished the outside of the tub. Got the feet back from the sandblaster. Tomorrow I'm heading to Sacramento to 'Mac, the antique plumber' store to procure fixtures and fittings for it. Been mowing our 2 acres between (unseasonal) rains.

Leaving for a week's vacation at our beloved cabin on the lake in the Sierra's on the 13. No cell phones, no TV, no computers. Just a kayak and lots of unread books. But I'll be busy next week getting everything ready.
