I cant do this alone! Photoshoppers,can you help fireplace...

problem! I have tried to visualize this stinkin thing,but I am at a loss. I am having a problem because the hearth is set out to meet the rear wall and therefore the stone will be just kinda stopping. I am including a pic of the fireplace(excuse the glare) a side view,because thats part of the issue. I am also including a mantle I like. We are using the stone around the doors and around the hearth. The top will be painted. Rocking the whole thing is to much $$ and to much weight for the floor. What I would like to have help seeing is the mantle,but wrapping it back on the sides of the fireplace and stopping the stone under it(kinda where the durock ends). Is that too complicated? This thing is driving me crazy.Thanks so much!

Man, I love the wall color you used! I actually was going to use the whole mantle(including legs) and possibly wrap the mantle around the side, kinda like a paneled wall look? I also am using beige hearth stones on top of the hearth instead of the stone.Thanks so much for helping, my husbands about to strangle me on this!lol

Find out what is underneath before you dig or remove existing shrubs or trees because they may have roots down around: water, gas, electrical, phone, or TV cable lines septic tanks or sewer pipes Plan ahead for possible uses of the green lawn so you still have enough straight space for bocce ball, croquet, etc. Our son reminds me every time I expand or make new beds that take away some of the lawn. Good tip to lay out outline with hose. I've also used pots empty or filled to visualize the height as I have to see it and can't envision it. Walk the area, sit in a chair in various spots, check the views, & over several days decide where the lines should be for garden, lawn, porch, etc. Since the street is on one side think about possible entry from kids on bikes, stray balls, & noise pollution from cars. Think about all the seasons & how your gardens will affect snow & leaf removal, lawn mowing, getting amendments to the garden, harvesting herbs, etc. Before I had paths & more garden beds in the front yard I didn't go in it unless I was mowing, playing a game with the kids, or pulling weeds. Now, I look out every day, walk it, & enjoy the space. Another factor is air quality - from street, or neighbors... Neither were a problem for 15 years until neighbors moved in who smoked on their porch & used burn barrels in front & back yard. Three adult drivers + their frequent guests driving on gravel drive that passes our house 1st, then cigarette smoke increased as they visited... Prevailing wind carried smoke across lawn to our home & even up over house & into the back yard. If any window open would suck it right into the house. Now I can go right outside without checking if the "smoke was clear", wearing a bandana, or carrying an inhaler. Something I took for granted -- clean air -- has returned because they moved away in January. I'm delighted we could scrap our plans to build a screen & hedge between us because I prefer the open space instead. I didn't think it would work very well anyway unless we planted more trees & our septic is in the middle of the lawn. Our only other option would be to move & I'm so glad they did instead!

Gloria is right, of course. I think of a friend who has a husband who doesn't do much in terms of housework, yardwork, repair work, cooking, child care, etc. He does make the bulk of their income. I still think that I'd have a hard time living with him -- he does not seem to regard their home as partially his responsibility. I sometimes think that one of the reasons I'm single is that I expect a partner to make a significant contribution to the household. I'm flexible on what that contribution is -- I'd be happy for someone who was willing to pay for and coordinate yard work (or house work). But I've met many who expect to be picked up after and have their home life taken care of for them as above or they just don't care and are willing to live in a mess -- and I know I'm happier single than married to someone like that! Talley Sue, I am working on the thought that I need to make it easier for things to get put away. When I figure it out, I will let you know. Right now I have things cleaned up, but the usual pattern is for things to accumulate for a while, then get cleaned up again. I can only stand mess for so long. In general my house is reasonably neat/clean -- or at least never so embarrassing that I wouldn't let someone in to visit. Jean Marie

leahcate thank you for sharing! I think we definitely keeping it white! You are 100% right.. ..adding color does take away from this house.. does nothing for it. I do appreciate ChicoryÂs time and talent that she took to do this for me, whether she knows it or not, she was a HUGE help as she allowed me to see how it would look with color, but the most important thingÂ.she helped me appreciate what we have. (Thanks so very much Chic!!) To everyone else who lovingly helped, I want to thank you big time ! Without you , I wouldnÂt of made the right decision and would have had major regrets. Through your eyes I finally saw what you did. You were all a huge influence in helping me make the right decision. Your compliments were incredibly nice and up lifting.. you guys are great as you really lifted my spirits and helped me appreciate what we have also. Thank you again!!! I will find a new shutter and door color. The landscape will be done this spring. I am looking for my own photo shop program, so I can learn and use it to visually see different colors for the door and shutterÂs , different landscape etc.. as this will really help me in making the right decisionÂ. If you check a "Like" button, people may be able to see what you "like", and I personally do not like the like buttons, and so I almost never use them. They love to "like" things on the decorating forum, but I find mostly things that I do not like there and almost nothing that I like. I did add a project here, to show what I am doing in my back yard, with regards to landscaping and adding lighting, and so I "like" being able to do that. I'm not sure if it fits in with their guidelines for a project, but we hired an electrician on Thursday to get some of the work started. To relate it to cooking, having more light in the back yard will allow us more time to spend cooking outdoors, and it has been unseasonably warm lately - so much so that we have had to use the air conditioning, which I feel I should not have to do in February. However, Kevin said that it does not affect our electric bill that much, and I just wanted to lower the indoor temperature from 78° to 75° or 74°. I turned it off before going to bed, and the outdoor temperature dropped to the mid 50s last night, and the indoor temperature for the north side of the house was 68°, but my bedroom (on the south side) was still 72°. At this point I will open some windows. Anyway, the weather is very pleasant for barbecuing outdoors, and so I will plan to do that this week-end. I mentioned to the electrician yesterday about another fixture that I want to install outdoors, to put a spotlight on the fountain, which is in an otherwise dark area of the back yard. Thanks for the tip about the zooming! I had forgotten about that!

The perpective on this one is a little funky. By the time I pulled and moved the images around, it kind of lost something but maybe it'll give you an idea. Don't look to closely though...LOL! By the way, that wall color is pretty close to mine. I have Restoration Hardware Cappuccino and am in the process of getting red silk drapes so it reminded me of your room.

LOL...forgive the floating mantle...I forgot to erase it and don't have time to go back and fix it right now. Kinda spooky, eh?

Your fireplace looks like mine. If it is a wood burning one (which I'm assuming it is because of the Durock), please make sure you read the specs for how high up your mantle has to be if it is combustible (wood). I had to change mine from a wood mantle to a stone mantle since I didn't want the huge amount of space inbetween the top of the fireplace opening and the bottom of the mantle that the specs called for. My ceiling is only 10 feet, so it wouldn't have left me with much space above a wood mantle since I also have a hearth.

Also, if it is a wood burner, I don't know if you'd be able to use the legs on top of the Durock. The fireplace really does heat up a lot and you want to make sure you are safe. Sorry to throw this possible wrench in your selection process, but I'm sure you would want it done right.

I agree with va rosemary - we had to change the mantel we had purchased for our L.P. fireplace because of the required clearance from the top of the FP to the underside of the shelf part of the mantle. Ours was a non combustible cast stone, but the manufacturer of the FP was concerned with heat building up under the extended mantle shelf and 'flashing'. Look at the FP Mfr's specifications very carefully before you get your heart set on a particular design.

Thanks for the advice. I have read the spec sheets and basically I to meet so clearance issue but am still able to do a mantle with legs. The fireplace is 70''wide so that gives me 8'' of stone and room for 8'' of mantle(on the side) The room is 13ft tall,so yes the mantle will be high. However I can see the fireplace from many rooms in the house and its much easier to load. Its a trade off. Thanks again!
